About Eduino and Bonita Sousa

Eduino and Bonita Sosua made a life transition when they moved to Sao Miguel in 2006. Eduino, born on Sao Miguel, immigrated as a young boy with his family to western Canada in 1968. He met Bonita in College. Throughout the years they have developed expertise in several career environments. Eduino´s profession as a welder developed into a successful art career in metal sculpting. His sculptures are displayed in Canada, United States, France, Belgium and the Azores. A private collection of his works is displayed in Quinta das Acacias; the only private sculptural gardens in the Azores. Bonita, born in Canada has worked more than two decades in sales, administration and bookkeeping. These career experiences have led Eduino and Bonita into a rewarding business of investment and property managment.

After travelling to the Azores on vacation with their sons, they pursued the idea of purchasing a vacation home. In the process, they were introduced to Quinta das Acacias. They purchased the quinta in December, 2006 and opened the doors to world travellers in 2007 with new and improved operations.

Today, the proven success of Quinta das Acacias enables Eduino and Bonita to help outside visitors with the purchase and management of their dream vacation home,.

Our goal is to greet and service our guests to the best of our capabilities and see that they leave as new friends with many fond memories to return.

Our first trip to the Azores

  • 5 of 5

We came across the Azores by pure chance. We had heard of the Islands but had no idea where they were, so we browsed the internet and liked what we saw. Next came where to stay, again back to the net where we kept coming back time and time again to Ed and Bonita's Quinta which looked marvelous. So, decision made we booked the flights .The first contact we had was from Bonita and after a couple of Emails and a personal call from her we new we had made the right choice. Bonita arranged for the taxi to pick us up from the airport and also arranged the hire car as well as a few store cupboard essentials which made the whole experience so easy, we just paid. We stayed two weeks in our holiday home and enjoyed every minute. We toured Sau Miguel , found walks, even a place in Furnace to soak your bones in naturally hot water, we also visited the Tea Plantation and tasted tea.You can whale watch and much more. All of the cottages are wonderful and the grounds are a small paradise where you can relax . We will return and do not hesitate in recommending Quinta das Acacias and our hosts Ed and Bonita Sousa.

prachtige plek

  • 5 of 5

Lovely accommodation in attractive gardens

  • 4 of 5

Good, clean accommodation - all facilities you could need, set in beautiful gardens. Most helpful owners, ready to give advice or trip ideas. Ideally situated just off the freeway, which gives you easy access to north, south, east and west of the island. One tip would be to hire the smallest car you can because the roads are narrow! Very easy car hire and drop off at the airport, as it is presently such a quiet airport, and the roads are not too busy - and road signs are good. Would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Great tips! The roads are small but most cars available are narrow to match the traffic situations through the villages so you will enjoy the drive. The cars we arrange are usually standard but can get automatics as well. Because we have many steep roads on hills, we recommend more power (such as the diesel cars) to travel them. The major car rental company has the best service on the island and has a wide range of cars for us to offer to our guests at special rates.

Wonderful accommodations and owner hospitality

  • 5 of 5

Great location and easy access from the airport and downtown Ponta Delgada. Cottages are very comfortable, clean and well-maintained; Ed and Bonita are gracious hosts and very helpful. Horseback riding, visits to watch ceramic, liquor and tea being made, soaks in the natural hot springs, great food and drink, all made for a superb stay. Highly recommend both the island and Quinta das Acacias!

Second visit was just as perfect as the first!

  • 5 of 5

I don't normally revisit places I've already visited, but Sao Miquel and Quinta das Acacias are the exception. For the second year in a row, I stayed at this incredible property and this year I brought along 2 of my brothers and their wives. Bonita and Ed welcomed me back with heartfelt hugs and made my family feel as though they were old friends. Bonita arranged for our car rentals at a great rate. After a breakfast at an oceanside restaurant on Populo Beach we were able to check in early. I returned to the 1 bedroom cottage that I stayed in last year. The upgrades Ed made to the cottage were lovely and it was the perfect home for my 9 days stay. My brothers stayed in a lovely and spacious 2 bedroom cottage next to us. Each cottage is fully equipped, even with a clothes washer and is modern and scrupulously clean. Wifi is included. The complex is an amazing home to Ed's sculptures and his mastery of landscaping. Everywhere you look there are gorgeous flowers, trees and herbs. Bonita was sure to invite us to pick fresh herbs for our cooking and suggested the fresh lavender and lemon grass for tea. The Quinta is located in Livramento, a short drive from the airport and city of Ponta Delgada, but a world away from the noise of either. It is located almost mid island, making going most anywhere on the island easy. The complex is surrounded by a wall and you have a remote control to open the gate to gain entrance. Despite some rainy weather, my family and I enjoyed a great part of the island beauty thanks to the fabulous recommendations of Bonita. A highlight of our stay was the day we spent at the hot spring in the ocean in Ferraria. You must do this at low tide. Near the entrance to a cove, the ocean water is cold, but near the back of the cove hot water comes out of hot springs so the ocean temperature is a very warm 28 degrees Celsius there. Another highlight was the full day horseback riding that Bonita arranged for us at Quinta da Terca. It's just a short, pleasant walk from Quinta das Acacias. Bonita was very helpful in her recommendations for restaurants & made reservations for us at Cais 20, on the water in nearby S. Roque. Bonita also made reservations for usto enjoy a cozidos meal at Calderias do Vulcoes in Furnas. These meals are slow cooked in pots in the ground heated by natural hot water springs. My stay on this lovely island was way too short. I know I will return again to Quinta das Acacias, Ed and Bonita's slice of heaven.

Owner's Response: Good afternoon Andrea, Thank you for your great review! We enjoy having return guests as we have become old friends with many . You have given a detailed description of many highlights about Sao Miguel for future visitors to enjoy as well. The island has much to offer guests and less than 10 nights stays will leave the guests wanting more. The island is very diverse and has much to do in low and high seasons. Unfortunately, island weather has surprises at different times of the year. Thank you for staying with us again and bringing your family along. We hope we get to see all of you again in the future. It is not unusual to have family reunions in Quinta das Acacias and we suggest planning months well in advance if several cottages are required. Kind regards, Bonita and Ed Sousa

An Incredible Paradise Beyond Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage and gardens were gorgeous and immaculate. We felt like the rich and famous staying here at a fraction of the cost! Bonita consistently and promptly responded to our email inquiries and concerns. She sent maps and suggestions, including making us feel comfortable to rent a car (which she secured for us at the airport). We are so glad that we did -- allowing us to explore the island at our leisure. It took some patience to navigate roads that looked like they accommodated only one car, but we did it without any problems.

Upon arrival, Bonita greeted us with explanations of where to go and what to do, showing us several brochures. We cannot say enough about how clean the cottage was. We stayed in Cottage 1, with two bedrooms and the kitchen, bathroom, and living room in between. There were a table and chairs out front and in back, along with fresh herbs and a grill for cooking. Our 12 year old son loved the hammock and enjoyed exploring the gardens and sculptures. We loved using the remote to enter and leave the Quinta, again making us feel we were in a secret location for the stars.

Our favorite restaurants nearby were Casa de Pasto Jose do Rego (best food) and Restaurante Paladares da Quinta (outstanding service, great food, and beautiful room),both in Lagoa, not far from the supermarket. We also enjoyed the food (steak cooked on a hot tile) and ocean view at Restaurante Cais 20, a few miles away towards Ponta Delgada.

The restaurant at Populo Beach, a short drive from the Quinta, has nice food and great ocean view. Ponta Delgada was enjoyable but probably not as wonderful as most everywhere else. We enjoyed the quaintness of the smaller towns instead. We were glad we didn't stay there and that we found Bonita and Ed's paradise instead.

Bonita and Ed made our stay exceed expectations. We felt like family in a haven, which rejuvenated our souls. You have to stay here! Don't miss it! Thanks for a wonderful vacation that we will never forget!

Owner's Response: Thank you Donna for the great review of the island activities. It was a great recap of the many things to see and do for all guests coming to Sao Miguel. We recommend guests to reserve 10-14 nights to capture the whole Azorean way...the island is very diverse, and much to see and do with 30 walking trials over the island, whale watching, museums, thermal pools, along with cultural activities plus more to experience. The central position of Quinta das Acacias exposes unreserved access to the visitor that seeks a world of discovery. An 8 km drive to the center of Ponta Delgada will expose several botanical gardens dating back to mid 19th century. Centuries old architecture of basalt stone, traditional markets, quaint shops in narrow streets with cobblestone designs, sidewalk cafes and the numerous restaurants that will help the visitor taste this travelling experience. Populo beach with its clean waters and warm temperature is only 2 km to the south. To the west, one will find the legendary twin lakes of Sete Cidades. To the east, the hills of Nordeste displays an almost rain forest appeal. Beyond, villages with timeless traditions line the coast that so often is bathed by some of the most spectacular sunrises of the Atlantic. The true lover of nature will not resist the affair that Sao Miguel has to offer. (Google Earth-Lat. 37´45´16´34´N,Long.25´36´12´61´W)
