The Giostra del Saracino, a medieval re-enactment, with hundreds of costumed participants, is held in June and September - similar to the Siena Palio but with Jousting not horse racing.
Numerous International Music Festivals. Wine Tours. Truffle Hunting. Photographic Fair held twice a year in Arezzo.
Finally the fashion designer outlets of Prada, Gucci ,Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo and Valentino and numerous others are all under an hour away by car. The area is also famed for its leather and gold industry.
We'll give you the directions.
Walks and Treks for you to Enjoy: La Torre is ideally situated for the walker and the cyclist. Set on the slopes of Monte Lignano the area is criss-crossed with numerous ancient paths and tracks - some dating back to Etruscan tijmes (600-500 BC). The driveway of La Torre was an ancient roadway over the mountain linking Arezzo with Cortona to the South. It would have been used by pilgrims and messengers for hundreds of years. Many would have stopped here to refresh themselves at the nearby spring before going on their way.
There is a sign-posted walk which passes right outside La Torre's gate which takes you to the summit of Monte Lignano and from here you can enjoy views stretching for more than 60 miiles. This whole area is a state park and is well served with sign-posted walks for walkers of every level. We have comprehensive maps to ensure your safe return!!

About Sandra Yong
“Good on yer, Miss, it’s your turn now.” “Definitely not a Saga holiday...enjoy your adventure, but don’t forget us...” Buoyed with best wishes from colleagues and students and the love and support of family and friends, I had quit my work as a teacher, left my house in the ‘capable’ hands of my student daughter and was about to look for my place in the sun. Could my dream become a reality? Could I be responsibly irresponsible? There’s rarely a perfect time for change, especially a major one such as relocation, but my daughters were settled, as much as they ever will be, parents reassured that I was only 3 hours further away and friends promised hospitality. It was the right time, my partner who also shares my love of Italy and the Italian way of life, was at a crossroads in his life, retirement was a few years ahead and I wanted to cram in a few more adventures ... On 5th April 2003 this romantic, yet practical, fifty something set off with an open-ticket, an over-loaded car (well, you might need the kitchen sink!) and a contact....... After months of searching we found a new internet site with some interesting properties and one seemed to have everything we were looking for. After a flurry of e-mails and a surveyor's report, we bought la Torre. The location was ideal – not too close to town but not too remote, good access, two Guest Cottages and within the traditional farmhouse was an 11th century watchtower! La Torre became our home in September.... Much to our delight the rental cottages have quickly proved popular and many of our guests return year after year. We have met some wonderful people and it has given us a great deal of pleasure to share La Torre with them. We are only 1000 miles and a couple of hours on ‘Easy-Air’ from the UK but this in no way represents the differences we have discovered in a country that still embraces the seasons, celebrates its history, upholds its traditions and just loves its food and wine!!!
Sandra Yong purchased this Cottage in 2003
Why Sandra Yong chose Arezzo
It was love at first sight when we saw La Torre. La Torre (the tower), has been our home and holiday destination for many since our ‘Why not?’ move to Tuscany in September 2003. Ever since that first wow! moment when we walked into La Torre we have not been allowed to ignore the history around us because the original walls of La Torre – an 11th century military watchtower are in the centre of the house and part of our everyday life. The 1000 year old watchtower, would have been about 20 metres tall and was part of a defensive ring around Arezzo. Some authorities suggest that there were 12, but ours, 5 kms. due south of the medieval centre of Arezzo, appears to be the only one that has survived. These towers were built to defend Arezzo during times of extreme turmoil. Life, politically and personally during this time was a constant struggle. Firstly, to retain independence and not get drawn into the age-old rivalry of Siena and Florence. Secondly, to avoid the feuds between the various Guelph and Ghibelline factions within the city walls and finally escape the wroth of a particular pope or emperor who would occasionally remind the Aretini of the ‘bigger picture’, often with very bloody results such as described by Dante in the Inferno. Soon after our arrival at La Torre we started to learn about its history from Signor Enrico, the previous owner. It had been described as a Casa Signorile. ' Blah! That’s estate-agent speak, it might be a ‘gentleman’s house’ now but this house was a Casa Colonica/Farmhouse on the Albergotti estate when I bought it 35 years ago,' For 100's of years it was part of the mezzadria or sharecropping system.” How did the countless generations that have lived and worked here for almost a thousand years live their lives? This was the question I needed to resolve; not only out of personal curiosity but as a way of understanding the complex nature of Tuscany and her people ~ the people who had welcomed us so warmly.
What makes this Cottage unique
La Torre set on the wooded hillside of Monte Lignano is reached via a country lane through vineyards and olive groves. It looks out over Arezzo, a thriving small city. La Torre with its two guest cottages - La Veduta and il Bacio (each dating back hundreds of years!) is perfect for the rest and relaxation many couples - of any age - seek as a respite from the stresses and strains of the working year. The pool, just for the two guest couples, is set away from the house and you never feel overlooked or crowded. The extensive gardens offer many spaces and view points from where you can just sit and take in the ever changing views. There is secure parking and wifi, should you really need to keep in touch. Along with Arezzo's proximity and its numerous of restaurants varying from the simple trattoria to the crisp white tablecloth of the full-blown dining Michelin experience we are within 10 mins. of the railway station with super fast trains to Rome, Florence and even to Naples and Venice. Rome in just 1.13 mins. The cottages, each full of charm and home comforts, provide privacy and space just to unwind and BE! We have numerous guide books, maps etc. and are unobtrusively on hand should you need any help or advice. Just visit our website for more information and more photos. Italian or should that read Tuscan Cooking Courses are on offer and guests over the years have been able to extend their holiday experience by cooking real Tuscan food for their friends back home... I recently had this review... I've just pulled out my cooking instructions to make pasta from the cooking course we took while staying with you at La Torre, and was reminded of the wonderful week we spent last fall at the cottage. It was so beautiful at the cottage that we relaxed on the terrace more than we went sightseeing - which was perfect. We enjoyed walking along the road to the house, and going in to Arezzo to wander. We had an amazing stay and hope to return......

One week spent in this corner of heaven felt like a month !!
Il Bacio has everything you could need and leaves you wanting for nothing. We particularly like
the bathroom and the perfectly placed window by the bed, looking out in the morning while lying in
bed never disappointed.
Il Bacio is well positioned with many beautiful towns within a short drive which enabled us to do
late afternoon / evening trips rather than full day trips. Sandra and Paul have a wealth of information on the
area and are happy to share advice and tips.
The afternoon trips allowed us many hours unwinding and relaxing by the pool soaking up the Tuscan
sun and letting our thoughts wander in the complete blissful silence that defines il Bacio's surroundings.
This I think will be our fondest memory of our trip.
The welcome breakfast including a jar of to die for homemade fig jam and a bottle of Prosecco were
a lovely touch and set a perfect tone for the week to follow.
As a previous review mentioned, I would highly recommend a hire car, that is one steep hill up to the house !!
Il Bacio truely is a gem and we will both treasure our memories of it.
John & Isabelle
Thank you both so much for this and for being such gorgeous guests! We learnt again, that every holiday is different. Your later starts to Siena, San Gimignano etc. worked really well, you got to see these and many other Tuscan gems after the 'normal' day trippers had left. A bonus would be to see these towns without visitors when the locals would come out to chat with their neighbours, eat ice cream and just be.....
Best wishes to you both and again thank you.
We spent an unforgettable week in Il Bacio.
The cottage, although tiny, was perfect for a relaxing stay. The kitchen is authentic but very small and wouldn't be ideal for any big meals (no oven), but is fine for a quick pasta lunch!
The bathroom is lovely, with a nice white suite. Although the shower is quite small, and for any one taller than average it would be a struggle.
The bedroom, up some amazing big wooden steps, is cosy. The bed is very comfortable, with a little window next to it where you can sit in bed and look out over the hills.
La Torre is set in a stunning area, on the side of a hill full of olive groves. The is quite a steep, but beautiful drive up and the driveway itself is a bit of a challenge. Luckily we had fairly large hire car, but I'm not sure how a Class A hire car would fair!
La Torre is in the perfect position to explore Tuscany, and at the same time be able to escape and be away from all. Arezzo, an easy 10 min drive, has all you need as well as some historic sights and lovely restaurants. Le Chiavi D'oro near the Basilica di San Francesco has some spectacular Michelin quality food.
We had some fantastic day trips from La Torre, with Siena and Cortona the highlights. But we were also able to stay and relax in the beautiful gardens and by the pool, both very well kept. The views from the pool side are breathtaking!
Sandra and Paul were so very welcoming and provided us with great advice on where to visit throughout the week. They really made us feel right at home and we are very jealous that they get to call La Torre their home!
Thank you both for choosing to stay with us and for this very comprehensive review. We are glad that you were able to enjoy il Bacio's charms.
Fantastic stay in a romantic Toscane home
From the first acquaintance with Sandra, Paul and the beautifull home at La Torre until the last day we left we feel very welcome.
The tiny home Il Bacio had everything you need and looked very nice and romantic, and was very clean just like the swimmingpool.
We visit Florence by train, and Arezzo , Sienna, and Cortona a little mountain village with a beautiful vieuw by car.
Paul and Sandra were there when you need them, thank you for that.
Our holiday was in one word onforgettable.

Very unusual and quirky property in beautiful location
My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday .Sandra and Paul were very welcoming and looked after us throughout our stay. They are full of fantastic information on the area and booked two local restaurants for us ,which were very good, beautiful food at very reasonable prices. The views from the garden are superb and it is lovely to have acces to a swimming pool.My only small criticism is that it would be lovely to have more comfortable chairs at the cottage.I would love to go back for another stay in the future.
Thank you both so much for choosing to stay with us and I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. It would be lovely to welcome you both back. Again many thanks.
Our holiday in The little chestnut shed was exactly what we needed. Although tiny we had everything we needed and Sandra and Paul could not have been more welcoming. We loved the pool with views overlooking Arezzo, and our cookery course with Sandra was brilliant. One of the highlights for me was seeing the fireflies twinkle all around us while we sat outside in the evenings drinking Chianti! A real rural retreat, perfect for recharging the batteries. I highly recommend it.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review and I am so glad you enjoyed your stay in il Bacio, our converted chestnut-drying house. It was great doing the cooking class with you and I am sure that you are now recreating the recipes at home. You stay was during the peak season for fireflies and I am so glad you got to see them. Again thank you.
Romantic Rustic Getaway !
The property was absolutely fabulous, as were Paul and Sandra. They were helpful and friendly, and nothing was a bother. Even though the weather was not great ( unseasonably cool and wet ) , the property was the perfect getaway for our honeymoon...exactly what we were after. Its location and situation was incredible, with fantastic views over Arezzo and the local area, ideal for us being hillwalkers too, and the layout of Il Bacio was so perfect, we spent the week trying to figure out how to take it with us back to Scotland !!!! Fantastic stay and we would happily consider returning at any time or season. Mr and Mrs J Carter
Thank you both so much for taking the time to do this review, and we are so glad that il Bacio was able to give you the holiday and experience you had hoped for. I was amazed at just how many of our lovely towns and villages you managed to see during your week with us... Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Perugia, Cortona and Lake Trasimeno too. Best wishes to you both.
Arezzo and La Torre are easily reached because of the area's excellent communication and transport system. The nearest airport is Florence, (1 hour), but Pisa, Forli, Bologna, Roma are all equally convenient. The main Italian autostrada -the A1, which runs North/South from Milan to Naples is just 20 minutes drive from La Torre. Arezzo's main line railway station is just a 10 minute drive from La Torre - However, to get the best out of Tuscany we suggest car hire is essential. Bagnoro, the nearest village is just 5 minutes drive away there is a shop/bar and it is open every day. Arezzo, 10 minutes drive away has everything the 21st century traveller could possibly need - banks, buses, taxis, shops, huge supermarkets, trains, restaurants, markets, museums, churches and countless other places of interest. La Torre is adjacent to a State park and from here there are many wonderful walks (some easy and some a little more demanding). Cortona, Siena, Florence less than an hour away.
