A refurbished 3 bed cottage, with parking close to the High St and Esplanade
About Richard Lockwood
We just love Sidmouth! Having been frequent visitors for many years the charm of Sidmouth never faded, the appeal only increased. Spending time in the town and surrounding area is always pleasant, on a bright November day, enjoying an ice cream in the summer or having a potter through the streets leading up to Christmas - every season in Sidmouth is a pleasure.
Why Richard Lockwood chose Sidmouth
Having looked at many properties in Sidmouth we just knew that Red Rose was ideal when we walked through the door. A courtyard garden that gets the sun, three bright bedrooms, right in the heart of Sidmouth. The bonus of a parking space, the secluded yet central location. It was just what we were looking for. We wanted a holiday cottage that was homely and comfortable. Where the furniture was chosen because we think it looks well together, not because it had become redundant in someone else's home. We wanted the crockery and cutlery to match. The knives to be fit for purpose the corkscrew to not bend like putty. We wanted the glasses to be uniform. We wanted enough mugs and tea spoons! We really hope that you enjoy looking at the cottage, and if you choose to stay that you have a really good time in comfortable, relaxing surroundings.

delightful cottage in good location
Excellent standard of accommodation with everything you could possibly need. Welcoming touches and quality furnishings put this property above normal holiday rentals. Comfortable bed made us feel right at home.
The house was exactly as described and we only had a couple of niggles. One concerned, we think, a need for hand rails on both sides of the stairs - they would eliminate any doubts on safety (the one set of stairs is quite steep). The other is about the DVD player - the sound quality is not good.
The house was warm and very comfortable. It is comprehensively equipped. It is ideally located.
Thank you for your lovely review, very much appreciated.
Having checked the DVD player the SCART plug was not pushed in to the TV fully, hence your sound problem.
Unfortunately we are unable to fix a hand rail to both sides of the stairs as this would impede access significantly - especially in an emergency.
But we welcome all suggestions that may improve a guests visit.
Please do come and stay with us again soon.
Lovely property in good location, fully equipped we had a very relaxing week!
Very relaxing weeks holiday, many thanks!
Thank you Marcel,
Great to have you come and stay with us again - look forward to welcoming you again.
Excellent, in all but two ways
A beautifully equipped cottage, with everything one could need and more besides.
Clean, light and airy, and so convenient for both the sea and the shops.
Two snags only, which, while they would effect only some people should be made clear in the pre-booking information:
 Access and parking:
The cottage is situated at the inner corner of a cul-de-sac into which one has to make a left hand, right angled reverse turn and then drive backwards for about twenty meters along a very narrow alley-way, onto the parking space in front of the cottage. This will accommodate nothing bigger than a medium sized car without the vehicle overhagging the carriageway to other cottages nearby.. The reverse turn is also hampered by the chain and flower-pots of the Prayer Room opposite the entrance to the cul-de-sac.
These make a left hand turn at the top, one step before the upper landing and the bath-room, which in turn, are at right-angles to each other. Access from the bath room to the upper landing, and vice-versa,necessitates a step down, a turn, and a step up again, which can be difficult for those of restricted mobility, as there is nothing to hold on to. As the right-hand (as you ascend) stair rail stops well short of the top, a couple of strategically placed "grab-handles" would be very welcome.
If it were not for these two criticisms, I would happily make another booking for a further stay.
Thank you, Richard, for an otherwise lovely stay
Thank you for your review, I am so pleased that you had a lovely stay at Red Rose Cottage, and found it to be equipped with everything you needed.
I am sure that you will agree that the quirky and utterly quaint setting for the property far outweighs any access restrictions. However, I would point out that we do make access issues very clear on our HomeAway advertising by stating the following: ‘The cottage is at the end of a narrow single track public road. The drive will accommodate a medium sized car only. We advise guests to reverse up the road. Good reversing skills are essential’
On our website we also explain that there is no turning space, and that a degree of dexterity and manoeuvrability for the driver is required.
We go on to state that other residents need vehicle access to their own properties and therefore any overhang of the drive is not permitted. For approximate size guidance we have a Vauxhall Astra saloon car that fits easily, and a Mazda 2 with plenty of space. I will look into the possibility of making this clearer.
As for the turn at the top of the stairs, the age of the property would lead me to believe that the unusual design was sanctioned under Edwardian building regulations. That said, the safety of our guests is paramount and clear health and safety instructions are contained within the cottage information pack – including the recommended use of the nightlights on the corridors. We will however look into the possibility of additional support rails on the stairs.
I do hope you will visit Sidmouth again; it is such a pretty and charming town,
A really lovely cottage! Well equiped really nice!
We had a nice week with lots of laughter, wine and good food. For us it was a sentinmental journey, back to england where we were 40 years ago!
Thank you for your lovely review and for looking after Red Rose Cottage so well during your stay. I am delighted that you were able to sample the food and wine offerings, and to re-visit glorious Sidmouth after such a long time - we look forward to seeing you again soon - but next time don't leave it so long!
A very comfortable home in a great location
Our first stay in Red Rose Cottage and we loved it. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the owners had thought of everything. A very well appointed home. To get your car into the drive is quite difficult, I did it once, to unload, and chose it park elsewhere after that but don't let that put you off as this house has all you need for a very enjoyable break.
Thank you Graham,
We are so glad that you had a wonderful time in Sidmouth - do come and stay with us again soon - you will be most welcome.
