This is a lovely little house in the beautiful village of Pierrefonds. The village has everything you need - a range of restaurants, good independent boulangeries/boucheries and a little supermarket - as well as the magnificent chateau (which would be well worth a trip even if they tripled the entry price). We rented bikes to go on the cycle paths through the Foret de Compiegne - recommended. Florence and Herve were perfect hosts - a nice welcome when we arrived, restaurant recommendations and happy to help sorting out things on the phone like bike rental. We were there for a month, which meant welcoming family visitors from the UK over weekends. The location worked really well as it is only 2.5 hours drive from Calais for people taking the Eurotunnel, and only 45 minutes drive from Charles de Gaulle airport. The size of the property was perfect for just the two of us, and still OK but a bit cramped when visitors came. Florence was so helpful in making sure all our guests had clean sheets, etc., ready for arrival. The house was kept spotlessly clean throughout. We would definitely stay again next time we visit the Compiegne area.
A delightful and relaxing stay
We arrived at the gite late in the evening and our host made us feel immediately welcome. The accomodation is amazing and spacious with a modern interior and is delightfully rustic outside. There was champagne ,coffee ,juice and snacks waiting for us.Next morning the sun came up and revealed a peaceful beautiful landscape ,tranquil and ideal for relaxing .It is closely located to the chateau de Pierrefonds and the town I highly recommend this location and accomodation .

Beautiful gite in a wonderful location.
If you are reading this review then you are probably considering staying at Le Grand Autreval - in which case don't hesitate, this is a beautiful gite and definitely the best place to stay in Pierrefonds. The owners are lovely hosts and have created a warm and welcoming but also very stylish place to stay. The location can't be bettered, set very peacefully along a rural private drive that literally hugs the base of the chateau mount, about 5 mins walk from the centre of the town. There are two spacious bedrooms with very comfortable beds and French linen, a lovely lounge/kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher and TWO coffee-machines (Nespresso-style and filter - with extremely nice coffee provided for each), and a big bathroom with monsoon shower and separate toilet. A large selection of towels are provided and there is also a hairdryer. It was the little added touches that made it particularly special however - mini toiletries, gorgeous home-made jams, champagne, juice, water and butter etc, logs loaded ready to go in the wood-fired stove, and more ... Outside there is a small seating area and a barbecue, again with wood and briquettes provided. A beautiful place that we truly didn't want to leave. It is well worth staying in Pierrefonds rather than just visiting for the day. We decided to holiday here because of our two 'Merlin'-mad children and are delighted we did so. It is a delightful small town, with a friendly traditional cafe, lovely boulangerie and boucherie, a bank, post office, useful greengrocer, pharmacy and a few other restaurants and cafes (and you can find Carrefour and Lidl in nearby Compiegne). The Chateau (BBC's 'Camelot') is a stunning, complete castle, and remarkably cheap by UK standards (free under the age of 26!, and only 6 euros per adult). We easily spent a couple of days there playing knights and set-spotting. Taking a pedalo on the town lake is a must, while my children also discovered a passion for mini-golf. But Pierrefonds is also a great base for exploring the wider area and a quieter place to stay than the town of Compiegne - the beautiful forest, the Palais de Compiegne, Chantilly, the train carriage where WW1 Armistice was signed, many of the WW1 cemeteries etc are all short drives away. Paris and Disneyland are also in easy reach if you want more bustle. To sum up, you can't fail to have a lovely holiday if you stay here. We cannot recommend it highly enough and are already planning to come back next year!!!
Lovely gite, great location!
A very well-equipped cottage, tucked away in the woods just behind the castle! The owner was very friendly and helpful, and speaks very good English.
One important note for non-French speakers - At the entrance to the lane to the cottage is a no entry sign with "sauf riverains" underneath - that means "except residents", so go that way!
A beautiful place to stay
The cottage is very comfortable, and renovated to a high standard, with everything you need included. The complimentary drinks, nibbles and home made jam were a very generous touch from the owners, who were the delightfully helpful throughout our stay.
The surrounding area is beautiful, the owners house and the castle, breathtaking, and the village has patisseries, bars and restaurants. There are plenty of cycle tracks and footpaths nearby and other small villages of historical interest in the area.
We found a particularly good restaurant at St Jean Aux Bois about 4 miles away called Auberge A La Bonne Idée which is a real treat.
Overall we had a great time here and would recommend this cottage to anyone thinking of staying.
A very special French rural experience.
Petite and bijou, beautifully modernised and comfortably equipped. The owners gave us a very warm welcome and provided a generous fridge pack.
The lodge is set in a small garden amongst countryside within easy walking distance of Pierrefonds and it's many historic attractions, high quality restaurants, patisserie and deli.
The larger Town of Compeigne is within easy driving distance.
We will return and happily recommend this cottage for its position, facilities and the care and consideration shown by Monsieur and Madame Demouy.
