The apartment is on the ground floor of an Art Deco villa and has a shared tennis court and private parking. It is a perfect location for a relaxing holiday where you can sit back and relax in the lush, cool garden but there are also many invigorating scenic mountain walks as well as easy-going strolls to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the lake.
The apartment is in the scenic hillside village of Brunate just above Como. Known as ‘the balcony of the alps’ there are many panoramic views of lake Como and the alps, particularly magnificent at sunset. Just 7 minutes from Como it is an ideal location for sightseeing on Lake Como as well visiting Milan (Duomo, design trade fairs and Rho Fiera) and conferences at Villa Erba, Cernobbio.
First of all, this is a property with lots of WOW power. We felt like we were in an old castle on our multi-acre estate, complete with tennis court, incredible view and old style porches. The provisions and furnishings of the house were new and nice, complete with good shower, excellent bedding. The owner was quite helpful on our check-in.
There were problems. First of all, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone over 30 who is not an accomplished climber or does not have a car. The roads are all very steep, and the provisioning is a problem. I would recommend taking your groceries with you as the local grocery stores are not that well provisioned even after you figure out when they are open. The funicular to Como costs €11,00 for two people for a round trip, so getting groceries in Como can get expensive. The automobile ride to Como is an adventure.
All that being said, we did have a nice time on the trip. We are both octogenarians and we did it with bicycles. Really good hill climbing cyclists will love it. We were lucky to be able to push them up the hill to the residence.
Finally there was a problem getting there. We had not ridden the train from Bolzano to Como before, so we had no idea how long the trip would take. I talked to the owner once on the telephone and he suggested that we use texting only to communicate. We did think at the time that the train trip would get us there by 6:00 PM. We were off by at least five hours. The owner texted us several times asking when we would arrive. Each time we texted back that we didn't know for sure. It got later and later. Finally about 9:30 PM the owner texted us that he would not check us in after 10:00 PM. Well we do not control the trains. The wait between trains in Milan was well over two hours. We got into Como between 11:30 and 12:00 midnight. No hotels were open. I again texted our host to get him to meet us at th residence. We were offered a ride by a friendly bar owner. Again no answer. Were it not for this bar owner we would have literally been left in the street. He found us a hotel, 15 km away, drove us there and got us back in the morning.
Now it turns out that the for some reason the owner was not getting my text messages. The next morning he was in a bit of a huff about me not answering him. Speaking of huffs, I was completely upset with the owner. As far I was concerned he left his customers stranded in a city to sleep on a park bench.
