Alfama has genuinely protected his identity. The people, the old houses, their narrow streets and stairways, the grocery stores, the fado houses are unique and charismatic. Alfama resembles a small village in the center of a large city, where people meet and greet every moment and every step and where there is a great complicity between neighbors.

Since 2015, Portugal has more stringently applied a long-standing law requiring that anyone offering paid holiday accommodation register, until check-in, the entry, exit and identification details of all non-Portuguese citizens who use this accommodation. This law has entered into force in Portugal and most other EU countries since the gradual implementation of the 1990 Schengen Agreement to prevent trafficking in human beings and other illegal practices. In this case, it is specifically Article 45 of the Schengen Agreement.
