About Carolyn Bent
We have always loved France, and have traveled extensively in France throughout our married lives (35 years!). We were introduced to the village by American friends who have a house here, and we fell in love with it. We live in Laguna Beach, California, and have a grown daughter. We try to get to France 5 times a year.
Carolyn Bent purchased this House in 2013
What makes this House unique
We love our house because of the spaciousness and the view. Sitting under the pavilion with a glass of Burgundy wine and looking out over the valley, it seems like you've gone back in history. The view and the valley are unchanged from medieval times. The sense of history in a house built in 1775 is marvelous. We imagine all of the people who lived here in over the past 400 years, and how difficult their lives must have been, and are extra grateful for our cozy beds, bathrooms, heating and internet connection!!

Fabulous stay in a medieval village
Firstly, let me say that Carolyn was wonderful with providing information, quick responses to questions and with very explicit details of how to get to and to the property.
The property is a tastefully renovated village house in medieval Flavigny with a wonderful garden / dining setting allowing great views over the surrounding countryside. We were a party of four adults but the house can comfortably accommodate six. The bedrooms are spacious, bathrooms excellent and kitchen / living area is well equipped.
Flavigny itself is a lovely village (it was used in all the outdoor shots for the film Chocolate) and is quite centrally situated . We enjoyed a great time visiting the major wine towns of Beaune, Dijon, and Chablis all within an hour's drive with other attractions such as Chateauneuf en Auxois, Ancy Lefranc and other chateaus closer by. There are a few cafe/restaurants in Flavigny and basic food shopping while nearby Veneray Les Laumes can provide all your needs for self catering. If you're lucky you might catch the baguette/croissant man in his little van driving through the village about 8am honking his horn to alert the locals.
All in all, a lovely stay and impossible not to enjoy.
A beautiful home in an exquisite setting
This charming home is actually built into the stone ramparts of an ancient village. Three large bedrooms were perfect for our family of six, and we really appreciated the updated bathrooms and kitchen. We had a splendid view of the valley from almost every window, as well as from the beautiful stone terrace, complete with Koi pond and shaded seating. It was a restful oasis to enjoy wine and cheese after a full day of exploring. We also never tired of wandering the winding streets of Flavigny, a photo op at every turn. One of the best reasons to recommend this house was our host, who was amazing. She provided lots of information beforehand, which really helped us plan our trip. She also responded to any questions within minutes, and made us feel extremely welcome. This is definitely a place we’ll come back to.
delightful home in Flavigny sur Ozerain
We spent a wonderful week in this charming village. Our home for the week was in the lower house, where we could not have been more content! The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, looking over a beautiful valley and the bathroom was wonderful, with a large shower. Heated towel rails provided warm towels on a chilly morning: bliss!
The eat in kitchen was extremely well equipped and we were able to prepare lovely meals. We also had access to the garden which also looks over the valley and the hills beyond: it was so tranquil and made us feel as though we were in another time.
The village itself is utterly delightful and there are 2 great restaurants if one is disinclined to cook! We loved the old Carolingian crypt, and found wonderful places to walk in the nearby woods.
There is much to see and do in the area, including the stunning Abbaye de Fontenay, the medieval towns of Saumur and Dijon and wineries galore.
This house is a wonderful place to stay while exploring the area and I would highly recommend it. It is immaculately clean and extremely comfortable: we cannot wait to return!
Great house in a great location!
The house was beautifully remodeled and still retained the unique character of it’s medivial village location. It was a wonderful spot to spend 10 days since exploring the immediate area was interesting and it was easy to get to bigger cities like Dijon, Chablis and Beaune. The owners provided a wealth of helpful information making the trip even better like providing maps for walks to places like the old wash house on the edge of the village. We loved spending time in the garden by the koi pond with the beautiful backdrop of the hills. We hope to return soon!
Modern updates with the original ambience
A wonderful surprise with the updates to this more than charming home with the still original flooring , beams and walls . We were lucky to be greeted by the owners Carol and her husband who showed us all around and got the wine out to enjoy in the lovely garden that overlooked the valley. We enjoyed the local wine made in this town after our nearly 3 hour drive from Paris. The village has retained all the original homes and narrow streets. So many of the homes have been renovated inside by the many people from around the world who want to preserver this wonderful village . Our 3 bedroom and 3 bath home exceeded all our expectations for we 5 ladies. The home was also stocked with the basics for all our needs. The local grocery store was about a 10 minute drive away .
We used this as our home base for 5 days while we traveled around the countryside and enjoyed the , monastery, winery, Anise candy museum and gift shop and couple of restaurants in this ancient village.
I would return to Carols home in a heartbeat. Rent from Carol and you won’t be disappointed!
Ten minutes from the Burgundy Canal with biking & walking trails. Hike on roads laid out by Ceaser. Tour the Anis de Flavigny factory where the famous little candies are made, located in an ancient Abby in town.
