Architect house close to Paris and Versailles
My parents had the house constructed between 1954 and 1956 by the architect Jean Garaudet. It is located on the hillside of Bougival, 5 minutes on foot from the shops of the village where you can find everything you need. The charm of this commune has seduced many painters: its name is mentioned in many famous paintings (Monet, Sisley, Vlaminck, etc.) The famous “Bal des Canotiers” of Renoir takes place there.
More than a century after, Bougival has not really changed. Surrounded by a large 1700 m wooded fenced garden, far from the main roads, this family house offers space, quietness and greenery. You don’t realise you are only 13 km from Paris and 4 km from Versailles (bus, train and RER). The remarkable delights of country side and town are reunited. We can also offer a 20 m² studio for € 200.
Long-term rental up to 6 months are possible. Please, contact the owners for adjusted rates.
Up the hill in Bougival, past the shops that crowd the narrow Rue du Général Leclerc and up the Rue du Maréchal Joffre, one finds narrow steps leading to the Rue de Emile Richebourg. Rue Richebourg is really a quiet narrow alley, and beyond the heavy gate at 9 bis, is nestled the quiet lush gardens and the charming house of Monsieur Claude Hainigue, the house of his birth, and one that he now lovingly maintains for his rental clients.
Bougival is well-known for the impressionist painters like Renoir who found its proximity and easy access to the city of Paris and its unique combination of long summer days, the river Seine, and nearby villages like Bougival, an attractive setting for their compositions. In Bougival the visitor can walk the route of the impressionists and visit the sites of many of their most famous works such as the Bridge at Bougival (Claude Monet ) and the Ball at Bougival ( Pierre-Auguste Renoir ). We enjoyed several days with the locals on the Isle of the Impressionists at summer festivals during our three-week stay.
During our visit we had several sets of short-term guests who stayed in one of the upstairs bedrooms and enjoyed the benefit of their own private bathroom. At the same time, the downstairs rooms of the house provide several areas for family or group gatherings. The house has a good Wi-Fi Internet connection and a good washer and dryer. Access to Paris via RER ( Chatou-Croissy ) or SNCF (Bougival or La Celle Saint-Cloud ) is fast and easy.
Monsieur Hainigue is a gracious host and his home is well equipped to be your base exploring the region around Paris such as the Palace at Versailles. The home is well maintained, clean, and the kitchen, while small, has modern appliances and everything that might be needed to cook full meals. There is a patio off the kitchen for a pleasant breakfast amid fig trees and a front porch perfect for cheese and wine in the evenings. The front porch overlooks a large, well-manicured garden with lovely flowers and swing sets for children.
It is a pleasant walk down the hill to the butcher, several bakers, small grocers, and several ATMs. The walk back up is guaranteed to keep you in shape. The village boasts a surprising number of activities and cultural events, which are enthusiastically offered at the local tourists bureau and several excellent restaurants, including an outstanding Michelin 1 star restaurant where we had a terrific dinner.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house. We were pleasantly surprised on arrival to find the interior so clean and comfortable and even nicer than the photos show. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you could need.
We had some lovely days out visiting Versailles and Paris several times along with some local towns. Paris is easily accessible by RER and we were brave enough to venture in by car on several occasions!
Claude and Pascale, the owners, were extremely accommodating as we booked only a week before our visit. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone as it would not disappoint.
Muchas Gracias...Thanks Claude…See you next year!!
We (four adults) were absolutely thrilled with this home and found it even better than advertised! The house is surrounded by a large, beautiful and very private yard. There is a lovely patio just outside the kitchen where it's possible to relax in the sun or do a bit of bird watching. A deck off the living room looks out over the expansive yard. The house is a very short walk to the village and the patisserie, charcuterie, small grocery stores, and restaurants. The garage, off the narrow street, is adjacent to the security gate which opens to a stone path through the yard to the house. In addition to the comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms, there were lovely eating spaces, indoors and out, places for conversation or quiet reading, a wonderful library, and a well-supplied kitchen. We were thrilled to discover the rich history and culture of Bougival and the surrounding towns and forests. The Impressionist movement began just a short distance from Bougival at a floating cafe, La Grenouillere. That cafe (no longer in existence) was featured in famous paintings by Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh. Walking through Bougival and Louveciennes, a neighboring town, we discovered location after location featured in paintings by the 19th century impressionists as well as the homes of impressionist painter, Berte Morisot and writer, Anais Nin and the studio of Renoir. We walked among redwoods on the grounds of Madame Barry in Louveciennes (stopping for a wonderful lunch at the restaurant). We spent an entire day at the Vide Grenier of Bougival (a huge all-village flea market); marveled at the beautiful forest behind both Bougival and Louvecienne; took the train into Paris to visit museums, restaurants, and shops; walked through the gardens of Versailles; took day trips to Chartres, Amiens, Beauvais and the lovely flowered villages of Picardy and Normandy. After each adventure, it was wonderful to return home to Claude and Pascal's beautiful house, to reflect on what we had seen and done, to enjoy a wonderful evening meal and plan for the next day. Claude couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We would love to return to the house and certainly will recommend it to family and friends.
Warmly welcomed and well taken care of, our six-headed party thoroughly enjoyed our five days in wonderful Bougival. The house with its three bedrooms on different levels is well equipped, clean and quiet despite its central location. Although comparatively small, the kitchen had everything we needed, and was conveniently located between the outdoor sitting area and the dinner table in the sitting room. We could just as easily eat outside as inside. The garden is big, green and lush, adding to the impression of a wonderfully quiet and undisturbed haven, which, despite this, is situated surprisingly close to Paris (half an hour by train). A big thank you to Claude and Pascal Hainigue for letting people stay in their house! We would not hesitate to go back.
