About the property

Le Moulin de Boutineau

Le Moulin de Boutineau and its three charming fully restored cottages (for gites or chambres d'hotes) lies in the tranquil countryside heart of the Loire Valley - but is not remote, just 2 kms from the famous medieval town of Loches, with its own chateau, restaurants, café’s, bars, shops and lively twice-weekly market.

Spend idyllic family days relaxing around a sparkling 12x6 metre heated swimming-pool with nearby children's play area or explore the 15 acres of magnificent tree-lined grounds, fields and woods surrounding this peaceful 17thC watermill. If you want to fish there are carp (15-40lbs) in a glorious private two acre lake. The three delightful oak-beamed cottages sleeping 6, 4+1 and a romantic 2 can also accommodate an exclusive party of 12 and all have their own garden/patio and BBQ area, as well as cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, TV/DVD/stereo CD, full central heating and access to washing/drying facilities, the swimming pool, hot-tub, bicycles, petanque court and table-tennis.

Fishing at Le Moulin de Boutineau: There is a glorious, private two acre lake where you can fish for carp (mirror & common 15-40lbs) plus roach, tench and others. It has level, easy walking access around the entire perimeter which is lined with a wide variety of mature trees, flowers and the abundant wildlife includes kingfishers and red squirrels. It is an idyllic, tranquil setting for fishing. There are six marked swims (max. 4 anglers) and we also have a range of all the correct carp fishing equipment for hire as well as a selection of quality baits available. Our beautiful, pristine fish will give you quite a fight, but are just for catching, photographing and releasing again - NOT for eating!!

Cost of Fishing: During the peak 2014 holiday season from 12 July to 30 August the cost is 160 euros per angler per week or 50 euros per day. During the rest of the rental season (1 March to 12 July & 30 Aug to 8 Nov) the special price of a weeks fishing rights is only 80 euros per angler per week, making it a great combination of value, comfort, accessibility and privacy. Please contact us for details on our special loire fishing holidays website which has much more information and many photographs of the fish and lake.

About Jude & Julian Baskcomb

We moved to France with our then 6-year-old daughter Saskia in 2005 after falling in love with Le Moulin de Boutineau a year earlier, a wreck of a watermill and overgrown grounds left abandoned for 10 years. It was a huge step and massive change to permanently leave rural Leicestershire in England for a French countryside lifestyle near the medieval market town of Loches in the beautiful Loire Valley, but we have never regretted it for a moment (well possibly for one or two moments during the lengthy restoration work when some thought we were completely mad!). However, we had a vision of what it all could be and thankfully our guests - many of whom keep returning - seem to love it too.

Jude & Julian Baskcomb purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Jude & Julian Baskcomb chose Indre-et-Loire

"It's just all so much better than in the photos - they can never quite convey the lovely atmosphere of the place" is probably the comment we have heard from our guests most often over the years. Our aim was always to offer a really good quality holiday cottages where the men had an option to carp fish - and catch big ones - close-by on a picturesque lake, but it would still be a great holiday for their wives/partners/family & friends who would enjoy the sunshine, large pool, BBQ's, lovely grounds and nearby town and chateau's equally as much.

What makes this cottage unique

Beautiful grounds - a wonderful specimen carp-fishing lake with 12 acres of accessible, peaceful woodland, mature trees, orchards and streams shared with kingfishers, buzzards, red squirrels and deer. The clear air and warm, starry night skies with owls but no light pollution. We added the sparkling 12x6 metre heated swimming pool and can provide that special bottle of much-underrated Loire wine that makes an evening meal in the courtyard a perfect memory for so many of our visitors.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had an incredible 5-star week in the Jardinier cottage. Looking back, was it the fish, engagement, birthday, Jude's food or the wine that was the highlight? Every experience was facilitated by you in one way or another. I thank you personally for assisting us by going the extra mile whenever we asked, you produce a stunning cake for my birthday and Julian produced the most gorgeous wine including its provenance which was equally indulging. The entire holiday was filled with incredible moments, which we will try to re-create on our next visit to the Moulin where I will be looking to extend my PB of 40lb!"

Wonderful Week of Fishing

  • 4 of 5

This is situated in a fantastic location. This cottage was perfect for the two of us but is possibly a little on the small side for a family. Cottage was clean and well equipped and ideal for anybody looking for a relaxing fishing holiday. We were provided with a fantastic meal cooked by Jude on the evening of our arrival supplemented with a lovely wine recommended and supplied by Julien.

Was delighted to find that we had the lake to ourselves and using the bait recommended and supplied had a very productive week with the largest carp coming out at 29lb 12oz.

Local town is only a 5 minute drive for local produce particularly from the many patisseries.........went home quite a few pounds heavier.

Jude and Julien are very nice hosts, leaving you to your own agenda but always available if needed.

Really enjoyed it and hope to definitely return

A week fishing

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this gite for a week, two couples who had never been to this part of France before. Richard & Lee caught 50 fish between them with the largest being a 15lb Carp. BBQ every night, good food and wine. The supermarkets are only 5 minutes drive away and the town of Loches has a good selection of restaurants and bars. The Wednesday market was great for fresh produce. The owners were always available to talk to and they did show us the other gites available. They are all good. The pool was clean and the area was relaxing and quiet. We would recommend this holiday to friends and family.

First time in the Loire

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time to Le Moulin de Boutineau, Jules and Julian were great hosts and we felt very much at home during our stay in this relaxed Gite complex and lovely grounds.

The jardinière was nice but we felt it was slightly too small for our family and disappointed there was no TV only DVD player.

The ground and lake were fantastic, well looked after and large enough to go exploring. The fishing turned out to be the highlight of our trip with 22 Carp caught between the 2 fishermen in the family up to 34lb.

Overall we had a great time, great area and local towns, lots to sight see and the local Zoo is well worth a visit.

Overall we had a great holiday and this will be some were we will definitely return to.

Fabulous retreat with warm and welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

We spent an idyllic week here in June and it was everything we hoped for. It's a tranquil place with a spotless heated pool, gorgeous local walks and close proximity to a stunning medieval town. Hosts Julian and Jude made our stay so special. They accommodated our needs (with a baby) and were helpful, warm and friendly. Jude's four course meals are something to be revered and my husband and I were happy to discover Julian's wine cave!

I never normally plan to go back to somewhere I have been, but we are already looking at next year.

This place is very special...I would highly recommend a visit :-)

A perfect week for us

  • 5 of 5

We've just come back from an amazing week in the Cottage Jardiniere. Everything was better than we'd even hoped for. The cottage was lovely, with enough mod cons for an easy week and nice comfy bed. The lake - which was the primary reason for our holiday there - was idyllic, and provided Larry with two huge carp (biggest weighed in at 40lb). And of course the pool was a superb feature, particularly with the warm sunny weather we enjoyed. We did use the hot tub once, which was lovely but too warm for the weather the rest of the week.

The big surprise for us was the food and wine available. Jude is an amazing cook, and we quickly decided to let her do our evening catering at a very reasonable cost. And Julian had beautiful wines to accompany each meal, all locally produced with a story about the provenance each time.

It was always going to be a special holiday with a 'significant' birthday to celebrate - and then a surprise proposal and engagement - but the hospitality of our hosts and perfect surroundings made it extra special for us.

Thank you Julian and Jude, we're already planning a return visit.

On arrival we could see we had made the right choice for our holiday. As we arrived we had a very warm welcome from the owners Julian and Jude, and throughout our stay they were very friendly and helpful.

There is literally something for everyone whether it be relaxing in the hot tub, bathing in the pool or as I did spending a few hours a day beside the picturesque lake which is home to some stunning fish.

It is also a perfect location for exploring the beautiful French countryside with stunning chateau's close by which are definitely worth a visit.

Since being back we cant stop talking about our holiday and we would highly recommend this to any of our family and friends and we cannot wait for a returned visit here.

Le Moulin de Boutineau lies in Indre-et-Loire, part of the 'Centre' region of France. This is the royal historical heartland of Touraine renowned for its fine wines, delicious goat's cheese and near-perfect French accent!

The nearest major supermarket and superb patisserie are just 5 minutes drive while equally close, Loches (just 2kms away) with its maze of cobbled streets, dungeon & chateau is a magnificently preserved medieval town with big, colourful country markets every Weds & Sat with amazing selections of cheeses, breads, pastries, sausages and fresh local produce.

Most of the prettiest and most rewarding Loire chateaux are within 30 minutes drive including Chenonceau, Chinon, Valencay, Villandry, Amboise, Usse and Azay-le-Rideau and many hold summer 'son et lumiere' or music shows.

Also within easy reach are golf, tennis, horse-riding and walking or cycling in the beautiful Indre valley or extensive Loches Forest, while the zoo with its pandas at nearby St Aignan is arguably the best in France.
