We were fortunate enough to spend two full weeks at Casa Gabriella in late September as the grape harvest was occurring. We shared an upper level suite with two of our friends. With plenty of space and privacy for the four of us we enjoyed amazing sunrises and sunsets from our private balcony. The kitchen was well equipped for simple meals and was grand enough to bring in Chef Mattise from a nearby village to cook us a gourmet supper. The village of Tavernelle was a few minutes away by car but was well within walking distance from the villa. We found Tavenelle to be a wonderful place to get produce, sip a latte and have an amazing lunch, or find a great deal on unique fashion or market items. Having a car to get around was a must but from our accommodation every place worth visiting in the Chianti region was within a half hour drive. AnnaMaria was a wonderful hostess and helped us pick out some amazing gems that were right in our back yard...the silver workshop in Sambuca was a must see with works from a world famous silver smith at great prices. Other forays to Venice, Florence, Bologna, Pisa, Sienna and the Cinque Terra were only a few hours away. We would (and will) return to Casa Gabriella in a heartbeat!
My husband and I just stayed at Casa Gabriella for 6 nights! We LOVED it! We rented a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom (Unit 5) with beautiful views. The house was very big and we loved it, especially coming from 7 crowded nights in Rome.
Our Experience: In the beginning, using VRBO was not easy for us, as it was a new experience. I must tell you though, that many of my concerns were from communication barriers only. AnnaMaria was very helpful along the way, but we were not used to wiring money without a "contract" of any kind, nor were we used to waiting long periods of time between emails. However, once we arrived there, it all made sense! Why would you want to answer emails with this view? I can't blame her :)
Getting There: Entering the address in your GPS will actually take you just past the house. Be careful. The house is high in the hills with beautiful views and lovely country roads suitable for walking or running.
The Amenities: It was chilly at night and in the morning while we were there in Mid April, and the heat was on, even though we did not ask for it. 7 euros per day is what it will run you. Annamaria was certain to explain how to use the "ancient" coffee maker--it was fun! The washing machine thankfully had directions in English! It was too cold to use the pool, so I can't comment on that.
The Area: You can take a very short walk into town to catch the bus all over. We took the bus into Firenze one day, but quickly learned that we got bus sick.....winding hills in large buses didn't work for us.....Thankfully we had a car. However, if you are headed to the major towns around, the bus would work fine for you. There is a grocery store, the Coop, in town, where we picked up everything we needed. The town also has free wifi, but it is hit and miss. We drove to Cortona (1.5 hours), Siena (30 minutes), Volterra (1 hour), and Pisa (1.5 hours) all without toll roads.
Overall: We LOVED AnnaMaria, the house cat who came around everyday to say hello, and the peace and quiet of Tavarnelle. What could be improved? We would have been in Heaven if they had WiFi (for purposes of planning our daily adventures) and the bed was very very firm. Prepare yourself.
My husband and I will absolutely be back!!
My family of 5 stayed in the top floor unit for one week at the end of June. It was the perfect spot to relax after a busy 5 days in Rome. We were able to visit markets in nearby small towns, as well as take day trips to Florence, Siena and Pisa. We spent a lot of time in the pool, and also on our porch enjoying the quiet and sights of the countryside. Our apartment was as described in the listing, with three bedrooms (one was partitioned off from the living room with a folding wall) and two bathrooms. The kitchen was fully functional (though we would have liked a coffee maker!) and we cooked several dinners at home, as well as all breakfasts and some lunches. You need a car to get here and to take full advantage of the location, but the small town is within walking distance. Annamaria provided all of the necessary information on restaurants, market days, directions to towns, etc. We had a fantastic week at this house and hope to come back some day!
I'm a little afraid to tell my full opinion of this place...because it will be too booked to ever get into again!
This was a lovely, family owned operation. Roomy, spacious, clean, and super Tuscan. We thought that it was lovelier than the pictures. I stayed here with 5 adults and we felt very comfortable in the largest suite. The views from the patios were absolutely just what you'd wish.
There are many interesting towns and villages to wander into nearby, and even Florence is very close if you want to do day trips. Just a note - you will need a car to stay here. In hindsight, I wish that we had stayed there longer, and cannot wait to return!
I was traveling with a large (loud) group of fun lovers and this was perfect. We could walk to town/grocery and the setting is beautiful.
The description is accurate, the property clean and the host very accommodating. Spring is a great time to visit Tuscany and I would recommend this property to anybody.
Just returned from two glorious weeks in Tuscany. Casa Gabriella was a great base from which to explore many of the charming Tuscan towns and hamlets. It was very clean, spacious, quiet, and comfortable and as described and pictured on the website. The views from the property were amazing! The pool was beautiful although too chilly to use it while we were there. Annamaria was very helpful both before and during our vacation and took great care of all our needs and requests in a very timely manner. We didn't spend much time in Tavernelle other than the Coop (grocery store which closes at 8:00 by the way) , and market day on Thursday- very lively and not to miss. We visited 2 or 3 little towns every day and each one was our favorite; San Gimignano and Siena were crowded but beautiful and definitely worth a visit; Volterra, Montelcino, Montepulciano, Pienza, and Cortona were great, Castellina in Chianti closer to home base is a charming village and don't miss a visit to the most famous butcher in the world in Panzano in Chianti and eat at one of his restaurants. We chose a bunless burger at Mac Durio above the butcher shop - best we have ever eaten! I would highly recommend Casa Gabriella to any of our friends and relatives. It was a nice place to come back to and unwind after long days of sightseeing.
You can reach Tavarnelle by walk, where you'll find restaurants and pizzerias (in summer also open air pizzerias, low cost and very good), shops and a supermarket, wine tasting and bus transfers (hourly to and from Florence and Siena), and a large tourist office. From the property you can also make walking routes discovering ancient villas and magnificent old castles and villages. In each village, there are open-air markets each morning where you can find everything and enjoy the Italian way of life. Large supermarkets and outlets can be reached in an hour. For children, approximately less than one hour from here there is the seaside, the lining tower of Pisa, the wind caves, the Dinosaurs’ Park, the Pinocchio Park in Collodi, the Pratolino garden. At client disposal two mountains bikes, Euro 20,00 per week each
