Fantastic, spacious house close to Arouca/Geopark

  • 5 of 5

Dear Manuel and family,

we (4 adults, 3 teenagers) loved to stay in your house (perfectly equipped) and to use all the amenities this property offers. It was such a relaxing holiday!

The region (Geopark, UNESCO heritage) is lovely and the tips you and Miguel gave us were all highly appreciated and really worth visiting.

Alvarenga is a small rural town with a supermarket, butchers, some restaurants (limited offer; mainly the same small basic menu, beef with rice, potatoes, salad). A local feast we attended gave us a spirited impression of the country's culture.

Trips to Porto (1.5h by car) and the Duoro Valley (1h by car) were definitely highlights and a lovely change.

Thank you again and all the best,

Walter & family & friends.

Beautiful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My family very much enjoyed our stay in this lovely home. It's very comfortable and the views are amazing. Manuel and his family were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Be aware that the roads to reach the house are very mountainous, steep, and narrow. But once you get there, there is little reason to leave!

Gorgeous house...lovely grounds

  • 5 of 5

This review is a long time coming. Sorry! We stayed for one week last summer. This property is set just out of a small village which is a walkable distance. In the village is a bakery, a cute little grocery and some restaurants. The place is famous for its' meat but we found that it wasn't so consistent. We did like the restaurant close to the grocery store.

The house is lovely, very private but the host's extended family is nearby and attentive. The way the house is built allows for a cooler part in the back (as it is built into the ground) and then it opens up into the living areas. The kitchen is small but well equipped and the living and dining room ample and comfortable. The place has a lot of windows so you need to manage that in the summer heat but it works well. Air conditioning is present in some of the rooms that really need it. The grounds are equally beautiful. They have an outdoor bbq with a stone table which we used regularly, and a fountain/water feature just outside the kitchen door. The pool area was completely exposed but very nicely situated. We really enjoyed that. They have some umbrellas for shade. It can get a bit windy. Overall we really got into the small village environment and there are few tourists that stay longer (this area is famous for its gorge walk though so lots of daytrippers on the weekend just a few miles away).

Just a couple of drawbacks. 1. The internet is slow and limited so keep that in mind. and 2. The village/house is a fair whack away from common modes of transport, the roads into the larger towns or the train station is windy and steep. A car definitely required to get there.

We loved Portugal, and this house was a big part of that.

Cool Country Spot

  • 5 of 5

We visited in January - not the normal tourist activity for this area of country Portugal - and had a great time. Manuel, Miguel and Vahan were very helpful and got us cozy with the wood burning radiator heating system and then gave us good local recommendations. We made day trips to Porto, Arouca and the Duouro Valley and enjoyed the countryside and the local bifes. The house is beautiful and lots of country space around it while be close to the village.

Tranquil, out of this world, beautiful home and lo

  • 5 of 5

This was booked as a 60th wedding anniversary holiday for my parents, unfortunately my mother passed away just before. We hesitated about still going but decided it would be what mom would want. It was just what we needed. Absolutely beautiful home and so quiet and what an amazing family - all so happy to help and make us feel welcome and going out of their way to make sure dad was doing ok. The house is amazing and spacious, being in the pool surrounded by the trees is beautiful. The local town are so friendly, butchers, cafe, a shop that sells everything needed for a holiday and cheap 5L bottles of wine. Every night on the balcony drinking the wine in awe of the amount of stars and shooting stars! Hire a car and there are so many places to visit, great restaurants, trilobite museum is worth a visit. There had been fires in the forest which were saddening at the destruction but it didn't dampen our holiday at all. A much needed break at a much needed time in such a beautiful home. We loved it! Thank you.

The swimmingpool is 8 x 4 MCAR hire is recommended so you can explore all the beautiful places in the area, experiment typical delicious food in the nearest well-known towns as well as in hidden villages' restaurants, and enjoy our great river beaches.

In the surroundings, there are lots of organized walking tracks in the mountain, to abandoned tungsten mines, to natural sites like waterfalls, visits to cultural sites like churches, art museums, archaeological museums (like the Trilobite Museum, a very unique initiative from the family of village Canelas), Romanic style monuments, etc.

In june 2015 an amazing unique track on the mountain was open. Take a look at:

http: // www. passadicosdopaiva. en /

This amazing track is in the surroundings of Alvarenga, 7 Km from Longra country house.

There are very good restaurants in Alvarenga, where you can eat the famous cow meat. But if you are willing for more variety and gourmet from the Portuguese gastronomy, we can advise you TRILOBITE, the top restaurant in Canelas, 10 Kms from our village (check it on facebook and tripadvisor).

A spectacular place for holidays with the family in the country. Great environment, a fully decorated house, the swimming pool, outside granite stone table to enjoy your meal under an old tree. Very quiet, peaceful and safe place.
