Located in some of California's most rugged and breathtaking scenery, the cabin is situated 650 feet above the Big Sur coastline overlooking Highway One. Guests can enjoy a fifty-mile panoramic view from Cape San Martin to Point Sur. The cabin overlooks Jade Cove where some of the worlds most exquisite jade has been found and is celebrated in the nearby annual Jade Festival each October.
While the cabin is ideal for a romantic getaway or spirit renewing retreat, it is also located close to multiple outdoor activities. If you choose an ACTIVE vacation, Sand Dollar Beach is 5 minutes away where beach combing, surfing and picnicking are available. Numerous hiking opportunities abound in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest. Within an hour's drive or less, one can visit The Hermitage, Nepenthe, Elephant Seal Beach, Esalen Institute, Big Sur Village, Julia Pfieffer, Andrew Molera and Limekiln State Parks to mention a few highlights.
Tour world famous Hearst Castle then spend the day shopping for that special art piece in charming Cambria. In less than an hour and a half drive you can visit Mission San Antonio or enjoy wine tasting in Paso Robles wine country.
If you prefer a more RELAXED vacation, enjoy the expansive view of the ever-changing Pacific from either of two decks. Catch a glimpse of Grey or Humpback whales, dolphins, flocks of wild pigeons, boats, or perhaps a hang-glider before he lands.
Catch some rays on the built-in sun bench or take a dip in the hot tub while watching awesome sunsets. While soaking in the hot tub, listen to the surf and sea lions below. Wildlife is as close as the gardens. Big Sur Coast Cabin is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat site.
Relax on the sectional and bird watch through the windows for local favorites at the feeders. If you are very lucky, you might see a magnificent California Condor at eyeball-to-eyeball level. And when total darkness decends, sit on the deck and watch the Milky Way appear with no city lights to compete.
Chefs can try their skills on the outdoor kitchen/patio stainless steel grill and side burner. Enjoy the 6 person glider swing.
Still too active? Relax, do nothing but enjoy being here. Satellite TV ( flat screen High Definition) ensures that no one has to miss their favorite TV programs. You may wish to bring your favorite DVD's or use the cabin's library to enjoy with that favorite novel. Forget that novel? Find a new author from the small in-house library.
Our caretaker Gail is close by to ensure a smooth stay. She is well versed in the local flora, fauna, and the nearby area and should be able to help you with any questions you may have.

Almost 50 years ago my father had the foresight and ambition to 'build himself a cabin'. Introduced to this area by his father before him, who searched for gold in the Los Burros mining area, he grew up with a love of the California coast and in particular, the Big Sur area. With virtually no services available and only a vision of the site he choose, he started his cabin. From building the road, clearing the site, hauling lumber and supplies, framing, etc., he brought his vision of a coast cabin to reality.
For many years, the house, simply known as 'the coast cabin' by family and friends, has been a favorite getaway and meeting place. Not only has it served as a place for fun and laughter but as a retreat for those who need time spent in quiet reflection. The cabin with its unique setting and stunning views offers a respite in todays hurried world. The memories made are as varied as the guests who have been there. We, as family, know we are truly blessed to have this treasure and we share the cabin with you.
The cabin was a magical place to spend alone time with the one you love. It was so good to feel as though we were in our own home yet so far away that we could relax and enjoy each other in the beautiful surroundings.
We will be back again and again to enjoy your magnificent cabin.
Thank you for the ease of the transaction as well.
The cabin itself is lovely, with all of the amenities, including a complete kitchen with professional quality stove. The house has two decks overlooking not only the ocean down below but also lovely flower gardens. There are too many birds to count--even bluebirds and California quail, visiting the birdbath. One recommendation: make sure your vehicle can handle a bumpy dirt road.
Four of us came here to celebrate turning 50 this year. The cabin is so spectacularly beautiful, we felt like we had won the lottery. Everything was perfect -- the view above the fog, the glorious sunsets, the view of the stars from the hot tub, the beautiful gardens, the many cozy and lovely places to hang out (the window-filled rooms, the decks, and the outdoor kitchen). We also loved our hikes down to the beach and to the cove. On top of all this, the cabin was wonderfully appointed and stocked with everything one could want (games, kitchen supplies, etc).
I have stayed at many wonderful VRBOs, and this one is my favorite of all.
I can barely find the words to describe our family's amazing stay at this Big Sur Cabin.
From the fabulous Pinot Noir and heated hot tub that welcomed us on Day One to the extraordinary Sand Dollar Beach and great workouts walking up, up, up the hill on which we were situated, our five nights in July were absolutely perfect. I LOVE to cook, so the professional quality stove and the outdoor kitchen compelled me to dine in almost all week. Yes, we chose to miss Nepenthe, which was probably a mistake.
The barking sea lions that served as my alarm clock each morning put a smile on my face and the glorious sunsets warmed my mood each night of our stay. My 13-year-old daughter had plenty of privacy and grounds to explore. The location was just secluded enough and yet Monterey and Carmel were an easy drive for a day at the aquarium and shopping. But frankly, I just wanted to stay at the cabin, read John Steinbeck and hunt for whales (we didn't see any--only disappointment.) The highest praise I can give is to say I typically never go back to the same place twice--because the world is so vast and there are so many awesome destinations I have yet to visit. But this place--I will return!! Again and again. Thanks to our hostesses Lois and on-site support Gail, it was an epic vacation.
A few weeks ago I spent my honeymoon at the Big Sur Cabin. The only negative about the trip was leaving the cabin to come home and go back to work. The Cabin has pretty much everything you could ask for. It was clean, fully stocked, and bigger than I thought. The one aspect though that makes this place special is the view. From the living room, top room, on the deck or at the grill, one can easily find moments of peace and serenity. Inside the cabin there are little touches to make the place very welcoming. I found myself looking at all the art work throughout the Cabin and browsing the books that were available to guests. It was all the little touches that made this place very special. Everyday my wife and I took afternoon naps only to wake up to Elephant Sea calls way down below or see falcons buzz by the deck. The afternoon and evening views where so impressive, especially from the hot tub that I will be booking the cabin in the future. Being from San Diego I have seen a lot of sunsets and been around the ocean, but the views and quite peacefulness of the cabins location makes it stand above many places I have visited. All the pictures we took of us in the cabin and on the deck had our friends and family ask us more about the cabin then our trips outside the cabin. Many of my relatives are now looking to vacation at Big Sur and rent this cabin due to our experiences. That is my recommendation for all that wish to vacation at Big Sur. Stay at the Big Sur Cabin and your trip will be more relaxing then you could imagine. Just make sure you have a truck or SUV. The dirt road going to the Cabin off the main road is steep in areas and the soft dirt can make for an interesting of off roading experience.
My husband and I stayed at Lois' amazing cabin for our honeymoon. It was an ideal location to get away from all the city noise for some peace and quiet. Lois was a wonderful host - tons of little touches throughout the house to make her guests feel welcome and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with spices and nice cookware, and the stove is absolutely fabulous.
The real star of the the show is the view. There is an ocean view from almost every room of the house. We spent the majority of our waking hours lounging by the hot tub reading and enjoying ourselves.
Though Lois did warn us before we arrived, I was still scared of the drive up the hill. 4 wheel drive is a great idea if possible and I am glad that we took our SUV. My Prius would not have cleared the bumps and dips on the road.
Overall, we had the best time at this location and would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thank you Lois and Gail!
From the daring hill climb; meeting Gail; seeing a beached hump-back whale (sad but fascinating); collecting sand dollars; chilling in the hot-tub; to waking up to incredible Pacific views... everything about our stay at the Big Sur Coast Cabin was outstanding. We cannot wait to come back.
