Big Sur Coast Cabin Offers Awesome Views

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1.5 + Baths,

Please Note-Due to the unknown status of Highway One to our north, this property can still be reached from Highway One to the south and Nacimiento Ferguson Road from King City.

Located in some of California's most rugged and breathtaking scenery, the cabin is situated 650 feet above the Big Sur coastline overlooking Highway One. Guests can enjoy a fifty-mile panoramic view from Cape San Martin to Point Sur. The cabin overlooks Jade Cove where some of the worlds most exquisite jade has been found and is celebrated in the nearby annual Jade Festival each October.

While the cabin is ideal for a romantic getaway or spirit renewing retreat, it is also located close to multiple outdoor activities. If you choose an ACTIVE vacation, Sand Dollar Beach is 5 minutes away where beach combing, surfing and picnicking are available. Numerous hiking opportunities abound in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest. Within an hour's drive or less, one can visit The Hermitage, Nepenthe, Elephant Seal Beach, Esalen Institute, Big Sur Village, Julia Pfieffer, Andrew Molera and Limekiln State Parks to mention a few highlights.

Tour world famous Hearst Castle then spend the day shopping for that special art piece in charming Cambria. In less than an hour and a half drive you can visit Mission San Antonio or enjoy wine tasting in Paso Robles wine country.

If you prefer a more RELAXED vacation, enjoy the expansive view of the ever-changing Pacific from either of two decks. Catch a glimpse of Grey or Humpback whales, dolphins, flocks of wild pigeons, boats, or perhaps a hang-glider before he lands.

Catch some rays on the built-in sun bench or take a dip in the hot tub while watching awesome sunsets. While soaking in the hot tub, listen to the surf and sea lions below. Wildlife is as close as the gardens. Big Sur Coast Cabin is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat site.

Relax on the sectional and bird watch through the windows for local favorites at the feeders. If you are very lucky, you might see a magnificent California Condor at eyeball-to-eyeball level. And when total darkness decends, sit on the deck and watch the Milky Way appear with no city lights to compete.

Chefs can try their skills on the outdoor kitchen/patio stainless steel grill and side burner. Enjoy the 6 person glider swing.

Still too active? Relax, do nothing but enjoy being here. Satellite TV ( flat screen High Definition) ensures that no one has to miss their favorite TV programs. You may wish to bring your favorite DVD's or use the cabin's library to enjoy with that favorite novel. Forget that novel? Find a new author from the small in-house library.

Our caretaker Gail is close by to ensure a smooth stay. She is well versed in the local flora, fauna, and the nearby area and should be able to help you with any questions you may have.

No pets, please.

Big Sur Coast Cabin is pleased to now offer high speed internet and Wifi connections.

About The Owner

Almost 50 years ago my father had the foresight and ambition to 'build himself a cabin'. Introduced to this area by his father before him, who searched for gold in the Los Burros mining area, he grew up with a love of the California coast and in particular, the Big Sur area. With virtually no services available and only a vision of the site he choose, he started his cabin. From building the road, clearing the site, hauling lumber and supplies, framing, etc., he brought his vision of a coast cabin to reality.

For many years, the house, simply known as 'the coast cabin' by family and friends, has been a favorite getaway and meeting place. Not only has it served as a place for fun and laughter but as a retreat for those who need time spent in quiet reflection. The cabin with its unique setting and stunning views offers a respite in todays hurried world. The memories made are as varied as the guests who have been there. We, as family, know we are truly blessed to have this treasure and we share the cabin with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The cabin was a magical place to spend alone time with the one you love. It was so good to feel as though we were in our own home yet so far away that we could relax and enjoy each other in the beautiful surroundings.

We will be back again and again to enjoy your magnificent cabin.

Thank you for the ease of the transaction as well.

Incredible view

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 had a wonderful time at the Big Sur Coast Cabin. Lois was incredibly helpful throughout the planning process, as we had to take some twisty backroads to get into the area. That said, the drive was fine, and once we arrived we were greeted with the most charming cabin and an incredible view of the ocean and surrounding landscape. It's truly breathtaking.

The cabin has everything you'd need for a relaxing getaway in Big Sur. We spent most of our days relaxing around the house, cooking in the kitchen or the outside grill/bar (which was amazing), or relaxing in the hot tub with a glass of wine. The cabin is also situated in close proximity to some great hikes and beach views, so it's easy to get out and explore the terrain.

Big Sur is easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and this cabin was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Can't wait to visit again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive review of the Big Sur Coast Cabin. While the natural disasters have limited access to Big Sur, the cabin can still be reached via the Nacimiento Ferguson Road which takes about 20 minutes longer than the normal Highway One access. We"re glad the longer way around didn't deter you and was part of your fun trip to Big Sur. We appreciate your sense of adventure!

Big Sur Coast Cabin Jan 30th - Feb 3

  • 5 of 5

Lois was a gracious host and communicated all the nuances of a wet winter at the Cabin very well. We really enjoyed our stay. What a great get-away to clear the mind of compiled stuff and relax. The bed was comfortable and the morning view from the pillows was amazing. All the conveniences of home and more. We grilled some steaks on the grill outside and enjoyed several beautiful night skies. We saw Grey Whales spouting off from the Hot Tub and the Elephant Seal Rookeries down the road were amazing. We'll be back.

A total fairytale in real life.

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a wedding to attend on Halloween day and we decided to arrive a few days beforehand to enjoy Big Sur with a friend traveling from San Fran. After making it up the adventurous road along the cliffside, we found the most beautiful oasis beyond our wildest imaginations. We found that we hardly wanted to leave to explore the area's tourist attractions as the view from our decks, hot tub, eating area, living room, bed, etc were just too incredible to tear from. The house has everything one can need and Lois was the most gracious of hosts, leaving a generous basket of snacks and delicious treats and a great bottle of regional wine. We have all vowed to come here again and just thinking of it puts me into a peaceful state with a smile on my face.

Owner's Response: Your wish is our command!! We are so happy you were able to experience the magic of Big Sur and the cabin in the fall. Indeed, the weather and the views are amazing. It is not unusual to plan on seeing the many sights offered by Big Sur then decide to just relax. We call it the "Magic of the Cabin". Please come back when you can and perhaps experience the magic and beauty in the spring.

Recent winter trip with my wife and 17 yr old son.

Absolutely incredible. Comfortable house, beautiful surroundings, great weather. First time in Big Sur, and will not be my last. Cabin is well equipped, and cared for. Awesome view of coast and sunsets. Lucky find, for sure.

Stayed here for three days on our honeymoon, wish we would have booked it for longer. The place exceeded our expectations, which were pretty high to begin with. Would definitely like to go back.

50th Anniversary

  • 5 of 5

What a marvelous destination for a 50th Anniversary!!! The Cabin is everything we had hoped it would be. Better than a cruise or Hawaii in our opinion. Friends smiled condescendingly when we told them that we had chosen an isolated cabin for our anniversary celebration. However, we have had the last laugh, and we would do it all over again.

The welcome package of wine and snacks was certainly a nice, warm touch, and it is much appreciated. The cabin was well-stocked with all the necessities for cooking the food that we had purchased, including the spice rack. We had every pot, pan and utensil needed as well. The furniture was very comfortable, as was the bedding. All equipment was in great working order. And when we experienced a slight problem with the spa, Gail was ready, willing and able to rectify the situation –even though she had had an exceptional long day at her day job. She is amazing!

We actually had planned to spend time away from the cabin to eat at Nepenthe and have an evening out, but the 180-degree views from the cabin surpassed any other place imaginable. So we stayed in and prepared our steaks on the patio with the BBQ. It probably exceeded anything that we would have ordered at a restaurant. And we were able to finish the evening counting the multitude of stars in the sky from the hot tub.

Carol and I have loved Big Sur from the first moment we saw it in 1967. We have frequently visited the area, but never have enjoyed it quite so much as we have this visit. We know that a few people have complained about the traversing the road to the cabin, however, we view it as a means to maintain privacy and serenity that would not be available otherwise. The cabin with its beautiful gardens and views provided us with a slice of Big Sur Heaven that we had longed to possess. Thank you, and we will definitely return.
