Quartier Mazarin is the nicest neighborhood in the old Aix; quiet but still in the heart of the city. You are in walking distance from all the top attractions including restaurants, shops, museums, cafes, theaters, train station and all the famous city attractions. The Rue Cardinale is the most elegant street in Aix-en-Provence with Eglise St Jean de Malt on one hand and the famous Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins on the other (where Alain Delon & Mireille Darc used to live). The appartment occupies the entire last floor of this historical 17th century 3-story building. You will enjoy panoramic views over the roofs of Aix-en Provence and even catch a glimpse of Paul Cezanne's favorite site, la montagne Ste Victoire!
Upon entering the apartment you will appreciate the bright open floor plan with oak made floors in the library and the very specific Provence made tiles called "tomettes" in the dining room , the kitchen and the bathroom.
This apartment is our primary residence. We therefore reside there all year round except during summer when we like to leave the South of France in search of adventure.
The apartment is 15 minutes by foot from the bus terminal where arrives the shuttle from the train station or the airport.
By car, take the Cours Mirabeau and make a right on Rue du 4 Septembre. Cross the the Place des 4 Dolphins and take the first left on the Roux Alphéran street, then the second left on rue Peyssonnel. At the end of rue Peysonnel you will find rue Cardinale. Make a left and you will be able to unload your car and, if you're lucky, park. Otherwise you have two public parkings, Mignet or Carnot, located nearby.
Walking up the rue Cardinale, after the beautiful St Jean de Malt church, you will find la rue d'Italie with its very high end grocery stores, bakeries, florists, butchers, etc..
As for restaurants, we recommend the italian Prima Pasta on Place des Cardeurs, l'Epicurial at the same location and the Millefeuilles for an excellent cuisine from Provence. Drôle d'endrroit is also a nice place to discover.
At the top of Cours Mirabeau, you will find the pastry shop Riederer where you must try their excellent chocolate cake, Le Trianon, a must!
Arnaud, on rue Fernand Dol, will rent you bicycles and give you nice tips to discover the beautiful countryside.
Do not forget, if you come in July, to book seats for the operas! It is worth seeing La Traviata under the stars surrounded by 17th century beautiful buildings.
