Overview

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, garden, terrace, veranda, fireplace and unique view

In the heart of the natural park of Garfagnana there is an ancient house of 1476 built on a Lombardic stronghold, still fascinating. Fully surrounded by nature, with view of the river Lima and the Appennine mountains, the house features a private garden isolated from the old town. Even if the house is old, it is equipped with all modern comforts and was renovated with respect to the original building. The Casa delle Campane was built in the stronghold just under the Romanesque Church of San Bartolomeo, and then was used as guard post by the Lombardic soldiers who monitored and protected the underlying river and valleys from enemies. Only in 1486 one part of the building became the house of the priest, with a small vegetable garden behind the monastery, where once there were soldiers monitoring the valley. To the other side of the building a manor house was built with a stable. This remained like that for 500 years. After the war, all citizens went away from the village of Cocciglia and the houses were abandoned. The Casa delle Campane is today a villa situated in the heart of the village, ideal for 8 people and perfect to relax in a sunny day or walk by the river with friends.

About Dania Mondini

I was not born in Cocciglia, but it is like I was! This was my family house where I spent all my childhood holidays, first with my parents and then with my friends… Today I always come here with my husband and my son. We travel around the world but this village is still fascinating for us and its beauty is difficult to find elsewhere.

Dania Mondini purchased this house in 1980

Why Dania Mondini chose Lucca Area

This house has been ours for generations and it was love at first sight. We always want to make it more comfortable… We fell in love with the terrace overlooking the walls of the stronghold and the woods… We love admiring stars at night and sunbathe during the day… We like the comfortable rooms of the house, always bright and relaxing… You can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view from this house that is cold in summer and hot in winter… The big fireplace invites you to relax and share moments with friends, drinking a good glass of Tuscan wine or eating some roasted chestnuts in autumn… This house has a great history because it was built under the San Bartolomeo Church before America was discovered… It is perfect for a family holiday but also for a romantic getaway.

What makes this house unique

It is not easy to find a village similar to Cocciglia. This stronghold is completely uncontaminated inside the walls, where silence, scents and colours of nature reign. Children are free to move and explore the region, so that parents can enjoy a relaxing holiday without any worries!

Bellissima casa in un posto magnifico

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Take the motorway A1 towards Florence and take the exit Florence North, then follow signs to Florence Pisa Livorno. Exit at Lucca North. On the SS-12 follow signs to Bagni di Lucca and then continue towards Abetone for 5 km. Turn left to Scesta and then follow signs to Cocciglia. To arrive here you have to continue for few metres going up the San Bartolomeo Church. In the square you’ll see a green door… you are here! Now your holiday begins. The path that you have just crossed, which goes up to the Cimone mountain, was the favourite one of Giacomo Puccini, born in Lucca and great lover of its woods. In the small theatre of Bagni di Lucca, few metres away from Cocciglia, we hosted some companies that remembered Puccini. Cocciglia is not so far from Torre del Lago, where the works by Puccini are performed in an evocative theatre near a small lake. If you prefer being surrounded by nature, we suggest you to go to the tourism office of Bagni and book some daytrips to Orrido di Botri. Here on the river, among the mountains, Dante Alighieri took inspiration for its Inferno in the Divina Commedia. On the top of the Montefegatesi village you can enjoy a path to a big monument in honour of Dante.

Cocciglia is a tourist destination, famous among those who love hiking, kayak and inflatable raft. From the centre of the small village of Cocciglia there is the departure for all daytrips through the Natural Park of the Alpi Apuane, today world heritage site of Unesco for its unique beauty. In winter it is convenient also for ski lovers. The ski trails of Abetone and the Alpi Apuane are at walking distance. There are also many interesting horseback paths and the wine and food tastings with typical autumn dishes like mushrooms, boar meat, chestnut flour, beans and hulled wheat.
