Quality of life, harmony, tastes... these are the terms which best define the Perigord.

First of all, as has been shown, the Perigord s raison d être is to welcome with open arms those who come here to rediscover forgotten pleasures offered by the natural and simple things in life : pure air, silence, space (especially that), the genuine beauty of the surroundings and the art of living that these pleasures encourage.

Those who value archeology, history, gastronomy, in the country of prehistoric art and troubadors, with its natural beauties, its caves, its old stone buildings and its 1 001 castles, the Perigord and its capital Perigueux, lovingly restored, are all places that MUST be visited.

Come and wander around Perigueux classified Town of Art and History with :

- the Gallo-Roman remains of the ancient town of Vesunna

- the Saint Front Cathedral : one of the landmark religious buildings along the Way of Saint James of Compostella UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This cathedral is quite a surprise. An unusual sight. It rears up, clear and white, from the very middle of the swelling sea of Medieval Perigueux roofs. A flash of brightness but which lasts. It dominates the town with its marvellous mass. What astonishes you is the lavish yet sober aspect of the Romanesque and Byzantine architecture but above all, it is the way in which the bell-tower grows ever taller as you approach just as the Compostella pilgrims in former times must have approached it, dazzled by it, captivated by it.

It is lofty and white, stark and empty with naves and domes, with arches and galleries and clear stained glass to diffuse the azure brilliance onto the stainless white stone.

- the Medieval and Renaissance district, one of the largest conservation areas in France. In strolling around the charming narrow streets, is to wander through 2 000 years of history.

Eating well is a virtue ! Having delighted your eyes, now is the time to delight your taste-buds. Armed with your shopping basket, you will be captivated by the atmosphere of our Wednesday and Saturday morning markets, where all the colours, smells and tastes of local produce, will excite all your senses.

From November to March, local award-winning duck, goose and truffles markets.

Taste the richness of this exceptional territory : foie gras, duck, truffles, cep mushrooms, strawberries, walnuts, goat s cheese, Bergerac and Saint Emilion wines,…

From the North to the South, from the East to the West, the countryside around Perigueux reveals the infinite richness of its natural and architectural heritage.

It is said that the Perigord countryside is among the gentlest in the world and since happiness never comes alone, the villages of the Perigord are overwhelmingly beautiful : a Romanesque church roofed in heavy stone shingles (called lauzes in french), a chateau or a very old majestic residence on which History has left scars that tell many a tale, the curve of an old bridge, houses enclosing the priest s garden where forgotten flowers flower discreetly and just there, beyond the last barn of the village, the meadows softly rise and fall to the undulating mushroom woods where the muffled fox-barks yelp in the night. At the period of the grape picking, the vines are adorned with a gleaming kaleidoscope of colours, a very subtle impression of russet ...

- Lascaux (dubbed the Sistine Chapel of Prehistory) one of Europe's finest prehistoric sights

- the Vézère valley, also known as the Valley of Mankind, is one of France s UNESCO World Heritage sites

- the caves of Grand Roc, Villars, Gouffre of Proumeyssac,…

- the Castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Hautefort, Jumilhac, Losse, Puyguilhem,… whether they are perched on the hills overlooking the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, or hidden in the forests.

- Sarlat, Brantôme, Domme, Monpazier, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, La Roque-Gageac,…

- the fabulous gardens of the Manoir d Eyrignac, the suspened Gardens of Marqueyssac,...

Henry Miller on discovering the Perigord wrote :

This is a magic land jealously guarded by poets... It is a kind of Paradise granted to the French. I am convinced that that is how it was for Cro-Magnon Man and that he settled here because he was extremely intelligent, with a highly developed sense of beauty. Maybe one day France will cease to exist but the Dordogne will survive just like the dreams that nourish the human soul.

An amazing apartment in an fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

I could not imagine an apartment in a better location. It was in the heart of the old town of Perigueux. You only had to step out the door to be right in of the action.

We were met by our host Marianne, who showed us around her spotless apartment. It is beautifully furnished and decorated and has all the amenities you might need. Marianne also had plenty of information, books and brochures on the area that you could peruse. This included a list of local attractions and restaurants. She was also able to provide information on car parking.

The flat was spacious, had great air-conditioning, the beds were comfortable and the linen was good.

I was travelling with a friend so the two bedrooms were ideal for us.

I would not hesitate to recommend this apartment. If I travel back to Perigueux I will stay there again.

Outstanding, immaculate property central Perigueux

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was one of the highlights of our recent trip to Europe. An immaculate apartment in the heart of ancient Perigueux, it had everything. Marianne and Jean Pierre were accommodating and very knowledgeable. They gave us some great tips on places to visit and had a comprehensive folder of local information. The apartment lacked nothing; it was very comfortable, large and felt immediately like home.

Local restaurants were plentiful and excellent; parking was close; the area was very safe and quiet and the boulangeries and fois gras shops were at the door. Great cafes too. We could easily have spent our time entirely within the old city.

After each day's travel - and we went as far west as Bordeaux - the apartment was a restful haven. I would return here at any time and hope to do so soon!

Wonderful stay right in Perigueux center!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in the apartment. The hosts are fantastic and so accommodating. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a bottle of wine, homemade jam, and fresh strawberries. The vase of fresh country roses were a special treat for us flower lovers.

We spent a few minutes chatting with the hosts about the area (which is so central) and were given brochures on the Dordogne region.

Everything you need to cook is in the apartment as if you were at home. There is a farmer’s market nearly at the doorstep of the apartment on Saturday and Wednesday, as well as a smaller Sunday market. At the Sunday market we purchased a roasted chicken and a larger portion of paella basque which were so delicious.

There are a multitude of restaurants and bakeries in the area for you to indulge in the local French cuisine, so you’ll never go hungry.

The location couldn’t be better. You are in the city, but within a 30 minute - 1 hour drive to the sightseeing destinations the Dordogne is known for (Bergerac, Sarlat, Brantôme, etc).

When we return to Périgueux, we will surely stay at this fantastic apartment again.

OUR FAVORITE APARTMENT IN PÉRIGUEUX!

  • 5 of 5

In October we returned to France to explore new areas plus revisit a very charming, favorite city. Périgueux continues to beckon us for many reasons but one of the most important being this wonderful apartment which feels like "home" to us. It was our third stay in Le Castel Saint Front and we enjoyed every moment. The owners, Marianne and Jean-Pierre, are truly generous hosts and welcomed us with a special bottle of wine, John-Pierre's delicious homemade jam, and other treats. They always make us feel very special and do everything they can to insure that our stay is a happy and memorable one. Their apartment has every amenity and convenience for which we could hope. It is spacious, beautifully furnished and decorated, has a delightful terrace, and is in a most convenient location with plenty of nearby parking. In the well equipped kitchen we can reheat prepared foods or cook a meal from fresh local market items. The bedding is very comfortable with lovely linens and we have made good use of the washing machine in the bathroom that has both a tub and separate shower unit. Although now we are quite familiar with Périgueux and nearby areas, for new ideas we refer to the helpful brochures, books and handwritten notes in the apartment's well-stocked library. From the dining room window we like to observe some remains of the ancient city wall which remind us of the interesting history of Périgueux. We look forward to the welcoming chimes from Saint Front Cathedral's bell tower and the bustling sounds of the large outdoor market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. This city offers an enticing array of specialty foods from the region, including the famous black truffles and foie gras. There is much to see and do within the city and surrounding areas. The Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum, a pleasant walk from the apartment, is one of our favorite city attractions. There are also many fine restaurants plus various shops for freshly baked treats, cheeses, chocolates, whatever one craves. In addition to the wonderful markets, boutiques are everywhere selling such things as books, clothing, kitchenware and gourmet items. Périgueux is a delightful walking city and each visit has treated us to new and interesting discoveries. So we are looking forward to returning, settling into Castel Saint Front once again and saying, "How nice it is to be back "home"! Thank you, Marianne and Jean-Pierre, for your lovely apartment and for all that you do to make it such a special place.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here. So often the accomodation does not live up to our expectations but not here. Everything was fantastic. Incredibly clean, beautifully decorated and spacious ..... and lots of nice touches to make this apartment feel like a home away from home. The kitchen was incredibly well equipped to cook up goodies sourced from the charming little market at the end of the laneway (this apartment is right in the centre of town, with everything you need literally on your doorstep). Marianne and John-Pierre are just lovely, welcoming us with a lovely bottle of red wine and some awesome home made peach jabm. The location is fantastic. We cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough, and it is exceptionally good value for money considering the excellent location and beautifully appointed interior.
