I am retired and wanted to take my family on a vacation on the west coast. We were a group of seven, including my two grandchildren who are eight and ten years old. The house is large with three levels. All levels had bedrooms so we had more than enough space for everyone to be happy. Paul is a very nice fellow. He brought the key when we arrived and proceeded to give me a walk through of the house. The greatest thing about the house is its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. There is a restaurant between the house and the ocean, but the living level and balcony are on the second level allowing a wide view of the ocean. There is also an outdoor deck on the third level. We watched humpback whales in the bay spouting and feeding the entire seven days of our stay. That alone was worth the stay. I have read about a chemical smell in the house in earlier reviews. There is an odor of chemicals when you first enter the front door. Because the weather was so great, with highs in the 60's and lows in the 50's, we opened windows throughout the house to enjoy the fresh air and to hear the soothing crashing of the surf. The smell of chemicals was no problem with all the fresh air. The beds were all comfortable as no one from our party had complaints. The house was clean with lots of supplies in the kitchen. The furnishings were a mixture of old and new. My wife, two grandchildren and myself went on a trail ride with the Sea Horse Ranch. We rode along the higher ground of the sea shore and then headed down to the beach. It was an awesome experience that I would highly recommend to anyone. We also went on a whale watching tour in Monterey. Several of us got seasick, ugh! We did see some blue whales and humpbacks. However, the show on the beach we watched from the living room of the house and the outdoor decks was a constant display put on by humpback whales. There is no doubt I would stay in this house again. It was sad to leave.
This is a beautiful home! We have had several retreats at this home, and we have found the home to be clean, well-stocked and inviting. The views are phenomenal, and the walk to the beach is just a few steps down the road.
There are several comments about a varnish smell downstairs. We think these comments are overblown. In our experience, this is an extremely minor issue.
So, Five Enthusiastic Stars for this amazing home. We can't wait for our return visit in just a couple of months!
I truly enjoyed our stay, great location but as others have noted the strong varnish smell on the first floor was there. The wine fridge does not work as noted in other posts. House is definitely showing signs of wear but the location is fantastic. We did not use the room down stairs as the smell was too strong and the views too nice upstairs. We had friends staying close by and we had 19 for dinner one night and the house did not feel cramped at all. The top deck is great for sunsets and star gazing. If the wine fridge was working and the smell was not there then a 4 star rating would be warranted. If the owner also does some cleaning of the carpets and gets a new BBQ then a 5 star rating would be in order. We will be back as it is a great place to be in Half Moon Bay
We spent 3 nights at this vacation rental with our children, their spouses and the grandchildren ranging from ages 4 months old to 13 years old. This house was very accommodating for everyone, kitchen was fully stocked with everything we could possibly needed and the kids had plenty of games to play with, which was a nice added surprise. The view of the ocean from the bedrooms along with other areas of the home were just breathtaking. We enjoyed the Miramar Beach Restaurant next door, you must try the margarita. I would highly recommend this Gem of a vacation rental. I plan to return again. Our family had an amazing time!
The location of the house is excellent. The condition of the house is disappointing. The "varnish/diesel" smell that was mentioned in other reviews (for 3 years) is still there! The smell was strongest on the 1st level, in the rec room and bedroom. There are 3 air purifiers on that level that we had to keep running 24 hrs a day (though they all need new filters, so not sure they were helping) and even then it was very strong smelling. Most likely coming from the storage of paint/chemicals and the boat in the garage and storage space under the lower level. Upon our arrival home, our clothes in our suitcase smelled of the "varnish"! Being able to open the windows was the only way to dilute the smell.
The carpeted areas throughout the house are heavily stained. The wood floors on the 2nd floor, in the main living area, were very damaged. The condition of the beds is mediocre at best. The TV in the rec room on the lower level doesn't work. The wine cooler in the kitchen was broken. The kitchen faucet broke half way through our stay and the owner was responsive and fixed it that day. The curtains in all the bedrooms are thin white cotton, so expect to wake with the sun! Most of the closets are stuffed with extra linens, mattresses, etc. and not usable as a closet. Couches and furniture in living room were very worn out, looked like the coffee tables had been left out in the rain. Unfortunately this house has been neglected, no money put into upkeep.
Pros: lots of space for a large gathering, we had 14 people stay here. Large dining room table we could all squeeze around. Third floor bedroom was good for kids to play in. Large driveway accommodated three cars. Washer and dryer came in handy. House was clean when we arrived, bathrooms clean. Having 6 kids in our party, they had lots of room to play. We saw dauphins from the living room.
There are A LOT OF STAIRS. Two long flights of stairs to get to the main living area, so this house is not recommended for people who aren't up for the climb.
The house is located on a quiet street about one block from the beach. It had plenty of space for our big, extended family of 14 including small children but has been used hard with little maintenance. The house was clean but the wood floors are very worn and the carpet is stained in every room. The beds are ok but the living room furniture is broken down and torn in places. The kitchen is large with good appliances and had all the necessities for cooking at home for a crowd. There are two dining rooms and it was nice to be able to eat together. There is a very strong odor of paint and varnish. We discovered more than a dozen 5 gal pails of painting supplies/chemicals being stored in the garage right below one of the bedrooms. This has obviously been a problem in the past as there are four air purifiers on the first level alone. There are chairs on the upper deck for enjoying the view but the patio furniture pictured in the ad is broken and not usable. A fresh coat of paint, clean carpet and removal of the odor causing chemicals would go a long way to improving this home. Overall the house met out needs but we won't be staying again.
