Run-down property beside a busy highway!
Four of us recently stayed in the cottage at Kantara Ku and were extremely disappointed with this resort. It was run-down and mis-represented. One bedroom had a double bed, the other 2 had 2 twin beds in each (Not what the ad says). One bedroom had no door and the other 2 doors didn’t close properly. There was no bedside table or dressers. Many lightbulbs didn’t work. No A/C. No wifi anywhere on the premises. No coffeemaker as advertised. The entrance door got stuck and only opened less than halfway so you could barely get in the door with your suitcase.
The bathroom was tiny, rundown and had a horrible shower ( not tub/shower as advertised) with black mould on the base and lower walls).
An unbelievably loud water pump under the cottage turned on every time we flushed the toilet or used water and woke us up at night.
The pool was nice, with lovely landscaping around it but had broken, dirty dilapidated furniture.
A simple Belizean breakfast was included. We ate dinner there only once at a cost of $15 US. It was plain and overpriced, considering we ate a fabulous dinner another night at a nearby 5* resort for $16 per entree.
There is a nice short jungle hike up to a lookout on the property which offers stunning views.
The Belizian family that run the resort are lovely, particularly the 2 young daughters and their mother, Daisy. The problem is not with them but rather with the owner of the resort who lives in the US. who is clearly misrepresenting the property. Few of the photos on the VRBO page are accurate. It is nothing like shown!!!! There are no curtains, the patio furniture is not painted and has no pillows. There is no bar.
We chose this resort because of the location, photos and the good reviews. After returning home, we realized there are no reviews more recent than 2016. We paid way too much per night for what we got.
Safety at night was a concern as there were few or no guests around and if there was a security guard, we didn’t know how to find him. One evening we heard a gunshot close by!
We are well-travelled, been to Belize twice before and visited all the other Central American countries almost 20 times and have never stayed in such poor, shoddy conditions at the price we paid.
This is a good location for nearby tours and a local tour co. gave a presentation for us on our first night, BUT don’t stay at Kantara Ku. There are far superior properties nearby which cost around the same as renting the cottage.
This is by far the biggest piece of fiction that I have ever received in the years I have operated vacation properties. The first line will tell you everything you need to know about this guest “ Run down property beside a busy highway”. I will point out some obvious lies that can easily checked out by a future traveler by reading the listing and comparing what was said here. Kantara Ku is located off the Hummingbird Highway, one of the most picturesque highways in the country. Busy “? It is a single lane each way that you can walk or ride a bike along with ease. It in no way has continual traffic, especially in the evening.
The statement of the property being run down, is clearly debunked by previous reviews on VRBO.
The laundry list of complaints? Bed set up in the cottage, No A/C, No Bar, coffee maker. No bathtub, or Security. The listing doesn’t list A/C a coffee maker in the room (there is one in the common food area that is 20 yards away), or a bathtub, (Remember seeing “ECO” in the title of listing?) The beds are as noted in the description.
Security? The property manager and her family live ON THE property, there is a night watchman on duty every night. (Please view the pictures on the listing to see how far the buildings actually are) It is one of the safest properties around because there is a Police Station next door to the property...(YES NEXT DOOR.) The police officers actually introduced themselves to these guests during their stay.
Cost Claim? 4 people stayed at the cottage and had breakfast 3 mornings. We DO NOT charge extra for up to 6 guests in the cottage. For someone that has traveled as much as they claim, I shouldn’t have to explain the concept of what "Double occupancy" If you want to put 4 people in the same place the cost is more. So please if you are going to make a comparison in rates, do it fairly. The cottage is the same price if you have 2 or up to 6 people. The per meal dinner we charge IS CORRECT but it includes free beverages (beer included) and it is served family style. Guests can eat as much as they want.
This guest returned home and demanded a refund or she would write a bad review, I refused, so here is the review she left .I will let future guests read the listing, previous reviews and pictures on the property and make their own determination on who is actually telling the truth. I believe it tells more about the type of guests they are more than the property.
Beautiful grounds and the pool is wonderful.
Karen cooks wonderful meals and the breakfast, which was included in the price was really delicious. She makes the best "jack bread" (I think it is called) from scratch. Everyone was friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were happy and comfortable.
A beautiful property!
We found the property to be very beautiful! Here are the things we liked : Alex was very hospitable when we first arrived and we enjoyed meeting all the animals. Karen was a fantastic cook and we enjoyed all of her meals. (Plan to have her make your dinner because there aren't many places to eat nearby.) Omar was recommended to us by Conrad (the owner) as a tour arranger and he was fantastic! Conrad was very accommodating as well. We enjoyed the lookout on the hill and it is worth the 5 minute hike.
The things we feel could be improved or would be good to know: Bring and use bug spray! We took our first tour of the property without it and I have lots of souvenir bites to prove it. The wifi isn't wired and is reliant on 4G cell service, which was minimal while we were there, so don't plan 100% on having it and you will be fine. (Apparently it's usually better than that but that was just our experience.)
Overall, we really enjoyed our time here and we appreciate Conrad, Alex, and Karen's hospitality!
It was awesome. Jungle experience
A jungle experience. The excursion in the jungle cave experience was the best ever!!!
Kantara Ku is the perfect location to serve as a home base for inland tours. Conrad is very helpful when it comes to offering advice about what tours to do as well as what areas to check out throughout Belize. His staff at the property are very kind and accommodating, and the food is EXCELLENT. My only criticism is that the cottage room had a loud mechanism that would click on and off any time water was used. Honestly I would have rated the place a 4.5 if I could, and I would definitely recommend it.
Thank you for the review.
The clicking noise that you heard is a pump that pressurizes the water . Since we are out in the jungle we do not have the conveniences of city water like we would if located in the city.
I am happy that you enjoyed your stay and my staff.
Amazing Jungle Adventure at Kantara Ku
Staying at Kantara Ku was much more than I could have imagined! The grounds were lush and beautiful! The pool was gorgeous and inviting, I only wish we had stayed longer to really take advantage of it! We slept with our windows open and although it was hot outside, we slept with fans on and the sounds from the jungle lulled us to sleep! Elsie, our chef, made us home made Belizean food. The food was amazing and Elsie was as sweet as anything! Loved her! Conrad, the owner, had everything arranged for us, from the transportation from the airport to the excursions we chose. We went zip lining, cave tubing, and did the ATM cave tour. Everything we did was memorable, exciting, and just an overall great time! Everyone we encountered was gracious and made our adventure fun! We hiked up to Gunnar's Ridge where there is a large observation deck to relax. The view from Gunnar's Ridge is breathtaking! If you have time to spend, I recommend at least 4 days so that you can really enjoy the property and the many excursions that will truly make for an adventure of a lifetime! Can't wait to go back and I know where I will be staying!
