Huelo Point Lookout .. a private romantic hideaway on the magnificent North Shore of Maui, Hawaii is fully licensed and permitted (permit # BBPH 2009/0015, TAT/GE #W40445368-01). It may be rented either in its entirety (2bed/2 bath) or, if you're seeking a smaller, more intimate space, you might like to look at 'Ocean Lookout' (the top floor). We also have smaller cottages - Star, Rainbow and Haleakala. Please note that the calendar here won't be accurate, as we have too many different choices for just ONE calendar! So feel free to call or e mail for availability. I will only fill in the calendar if NONE of our accommodations are open.
We have not only a lovely house, but also other small 'cottage' style accommodations available (starting at $235/ night plus tax), so we're an ideal honeymoon/romantic 'getaway' destination. Or, you might like to consider us for a larger family reunion (ask about our 4bd/4ba option). NOTE: BECAUSE OF OUR UNIQUE LAYOUT, THE CALENDAR ON THIS SITE WILL NOT BE ACCURATE - so please call, or send an e mail inquiry with your specific request.
We cater to the independent traveler - one who enjoys being able to prepare meals, do laundry etc ... you'll love our unique 'off-the-beaten-path' feel, combined with the luxuries of private hot tubs ... a swimming pool ... and views to die for. Written up in National Geographic Traveler as part of the 'real' Maui ... we continue to be just that. Here, it's easy to discover the joys of being a traveler, not just a tourist. Find old Hawaii ... it's here if you know where to look!
Huelo Pt Lookout is situated 400 yards back from the ocean, and 300 feet above the cliffs. The house floats in a dream setting ... ocean, sky, cliffs, rolling folds of hills, rain showers, rainbows, and a 10,000 foot mountain (Mt Haleakala - 'House of the Sun' - you'll love looking up the summit at sunset). Time is suspended in the primal beauty that is still to be found in Hawaii. What better place could there be to live your dream than in Maui? Prices from $235 a night plus tax (for the smaller cottage accommodation).
The 'Lookout House' has a comfy, casual, relaxed 'beach house' feel - a house that is made to be lived in and enjoyed. Your most difficult decision of the day may be in choosing which bed to sleep in - there's a king bed in the glass walled liviing room so you can wake up to an ocean sunrise and there's a second king bed in the master bedroom if you'd like to say good morning to our dormant volcano, often wreathed in early morning mist. Or perhaps you'll have fun deciding where to 'eat in' after you've prepared a meal in our well equipped kitchen - the dining room, with its huge honey-colored teak table, has panoramic views down the coastal cliffs all the way along Maui's North Shore to Hana. Or ... should you set up a romantic outdoor dinner on one of the lanais and enjoy the soft sunset light over the spectacular tropical gardens? Or tuck yourselves on to the little nook by the waterfall/lotus pond? Or take a cup of fragrant Kona coffee down to the hot tub? Or find the hammock strung between the Kissing Palms?
Then again you could simply throw some of our local fish on the barbecue. Try 'mahi' sautéed in a little butter with toasted macadamia nuts and just a squeeze of lime or lemon. Simple. Elegant. To be savored. The 'real maui' is still here ... come find it!
Or you may choose to splurge on your own private chef, light the outdoor lanterns, and prepare to be totally spoiled. Top it off with a dip in the pool or in your own private hot tub, or perhaps enjoy an in house massage. Choices, choices, choices. Our lovely house is designed to be as simple or as luxurious as you care to make it. Many of our guests love to make a fresh brew of Kona Coffee and wander down to their jacuzzi just in time to catch the sun rising out of the ocean over Huelo Point.

Jeff is a retired dentist - now he specializes in metaphysical counselling, and is expanding his hypnosis practice into Subconscious Training. (Previously he used these skills in working with phobic patients in dentistry - but these skills have much wider applications and he's having fun expanding them).
Sharyn is an actress, writer, speech therapist, permaculturalist & interior decorator. At the moment, she's enjoying theatre improv and working on a one woman monologue show, which she'll perform in a few months.
We have one young son, Kai Nalu, aged 17. And also an older son, Adrian, who lives in England with his lovely German wife, Antje and their 2 totally cute kids. We're too young to have grandchildren! aaaggghh!!! But what a treat!
Sharyn purchased this house in 1992
Huelo is off the beaten path, wild and wonderful. Who could resist? We have a constant trade wind, so we never 'bake' like the west side ... and here the landscape is lush, so it's easy to do our organic gardening. We wanted a Maui dream escape, but also wanted some conveniences, and these we have aplenty!
Privacy and relaxation are things that are priceless. So many people find they rediscover those things, when they stay with us. Romance too, of course - that comes naturally when you've re-created that space for just for yourselves. This is the natural part of Maui - not 'manicured' or 'manufactured' to be part of a Hollywood image. Here, you discover the 'real' Maui - exotic ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... soaring ocean cliffs ... nesting seabirds ... wild ocean ... what we dream of, when we say 'Hawaii'. Here, you'll feel 'remote', but still enjoy the conveniences of having access to 3 small towns (Pa'ia, Makawao and Haiku) for easy grocery pickup, P.O., delightful boutiques & fun restaurants.
"Aloha" - we had quite a workout while staying at your beautiful Hawaiian paradise. Daily endurance walks to the end of the driveway plus some heavy lifting - carrying bags of wind and goodies up the stairs - quick dashes to the sliders to close them before the squalls, then again to open them ... deep stretching each morning as we opened our eyes to the constantly changin views - perfect!
I have been to Maui several times in the past and convinced my partner and another couple to come. From the start, dealing with Sharyn was a pleasure! Huelo Point Lookout is more than we had expected. The photos do not do it justice! The directions may seem a bit daunting, but rest assured, as soon as you make the drive once, you are set! We were greeted with some Welcome treats at the house, and were quick to meet with Sharyn. We found ourselves not wanting to leave our little paradise for fear of the 'outside world'. Though, when we did, we discovered the Twin Falls, and several other little gems which were a short drive away. We did have a little Wasp issue, but that was quickly resloved by Sharyn who handled them like a pro! The ONLY downfall (if you could even call it that) of being on this side of the Island, is that the trade winds are quite strong, and can feel like you're going to be blown over on some days. When that happens, hop in the car, and take a trip to Lahaina!
From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank Sharyn for opening up her home to us Crazy Canadians ;)
We hope to see you again next year!!!
I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’ve never been a fan of big hotels. So when I came across “Huelo Point Lookout” I just knew it would be the perfect place our honeymoon. We wanted the ‘real’ Hawaii and we got it!
Huelo Point Lookout was perfect for us. With its relaxed ‘beach house’ kind of feel and fun tropical colors, it was no time at all before we felt completely ‘at home.’ We were coming in late, so Sharyn arranged to have a beautiful welcome breakfast in the fridge for us so we didn’t have to cope with late night luggage, car rentals AND shopping. We were able to just head to the B&B straight from the airport. Sharyn had given us great directions and the house was all lit up for us, complete with a welcome note on the door. Wow! We walked in to beautiful tropical flowers everywhere and a gorgeous fruit basket. Inside the fridge was a bottle of pinot grigio (my favorite) – and a fresh-cut chilled coconut. The hot tub was hot and waiting for us… can I say ‘wow’?
What a blissful week it was. Every morning, we woke up to the sun rising out of the ocean. Huelo Point Lookout made a GREAT ‘jumping off’ point for all the island’s attractions. We got a great jump on the road to Hana by being closer than if we’d stayed in the more built up areas and had the whole Hana road to ourselves. Same with the crater.
We did a couple of fancy dinners over on ‘the other side’, which was great fun, but way too built up for us. We REALLY loved being on the North shore – all the natural beauty … that great ‘off the beaten path’ feel … but only 20 mins away from fabulous restaurants, groceries and shopping.
Can’t wait to come back for our anniversary! (And I see from the visitor’s book that lots of previous guests feel the same way).
Five stars isn’t enough! How about TEN?
Oh, and by the way, you don’t have to rent the whole house. If there are just 2 of you, you can rent “Ocean Lookout”. That’s the top floor. That saves a bit of money and no one is in the lower floor at the same time, so we always had total privacy (not to mention a great massage chair). The views are incredible from every room – all the way to Hana along the whole of Maui’s north shore.
