If you want to immerse yourself in Italian culture, to find the Italy of the olden days, this is the place to do it: quiet, perfect base to explore the Italian Lakes, Breglia is not affected by tourism but at few minutes from the most famous lake places as Bellagio. The village offers beautiful views, green woods for a refreshingly peaceful and restorative stay, good place for keen walkers: from Breglia start numerous hiking for all levels of difficulty. Some routes slide into the woods and reach old lake villages, others rising on mountain above the town, with stunning views.
The tower is in the oldest part of the village, its walls have a thousand years, the facade reveal ancient stone windows, next there was a convent of monks (15th century). Walking through the village you will discover panoramic glympses and picturesque corners, like the old stone fountains.
PARKING: The village is medieval and streets are pedestrian only: a big free public parking is at 80 meters from the tower.
Bar-restaurant, at 100 metres from the tower, where is possible to have breakfast/dinner/lunch; open every day, good food: breakfast service 6€, tourist menu 16€, or menu a la carte.
- The tower does not have a lake view
- This location is not suitable for those with mobility problems (stairs)
- Cot and highchair available on request, without charge.
My female cousin and I stayed in the Portico apartment for 2 nights at the beginning of a 9 day journey across the Alps. The charm and natural beauty of this village was the absolute highlight of our trip, and the Portico apartment at the mid-level of a medieval tower was like a step backwards into a time we modern people can only dream about! The apartment is a stunning example of medieval architecture, and it offers every modern convenience one could possibly need. It is spotlessly clean, too! Lucia, the property owner/manager, is without question the most gracious and kind hostess I could have ever imagined or hoped for. It may not be well advertised, but she is a well educated historian about the area, and the depth of her knowledge is fascinating! The stories she had to offer about the village, the lake, and the surrounding community left me wanting much, much more. Two nights simply wasn't enough! I could stay there a month and still look forward to the next day. It is an amazing place to visit! Besides the village itself, the walking in the area must easily rate amongst the most breathtaking and awe inspiring sights throughout the entire world! My cousin and I hiked to Rifugio Menaggio, about 90 minutes up the mountain from the Portico apartment and Breglia village. Our hike was knee deep in snow for about 2/3 of the climb and descent, but the effort was worth 8 hours of climbing! If the view overlooking Lake Como from Rifugio Menaggio doesn't make a person believe in God, then nothing will. Only He could have created such an unbelievable setting! And the food up there wasn't half bad either. Bring some Euros so you can have some lunch and sit on the porch gazing at the mountainous lake view. I am not a person who generally visits the same place twice, but I am going to try my best to return to Breglia again some day, not only to stay in the Portico apartment, but also to listen to Lucia's stories and hike many, many more miles. This is a five star destination for anyone seeking a unique experience that no hotel or country club could ever match! The only caution would be there is a moderately inclined walk (3-5 minutes) to reach the apartment from the parking area. It is not easily handicap accessible, unfortunately. And the only thing I didn't like about the apartment was the small shower, but after staying in several European hotels during my brief adventure, that seems to be normal. What can I say, I'm a spoiled American!
We had great few days in the studio. The owner is really welcoming and heplfull. The papartment is clean and well located in a peaceful village clos to menaggio.
