Historic Landmark building: huge loft-style apartment overlooking ancient oaks
About Ellis Anderson
We are architect Larry Jaubert and Ellis Anderson (Jaubert), writer and digital magazine publisher. We've both lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for over thirty years and adore Bay St. Louis. We feel so fortunate to live in and be the current stewards of Webb School and delight sharing its many charms with guests. We usually give guests a five-minute orientation tour of the apartment when they arrive, then 'poof!' we disappear until you need information or directions. If you want to find out what's happening in Bay St. Louis, you might want to check out the Shoofly Magazine, a monthly online publication filled with stories about our awesome town (Ellis is publisher and it's created each month right here in Webb School. Do a search on the magazine name to check it out!). Ask about our discounted rates for weekly and monthly stays!
Ellis Anderson purchased this Apartment in 2002
Why Ellis Anderson chose Bay Saint Louis
Webb School is a designated Mississippi Landmark - one of only six in all of Hancock County. A Landmark the highest recognition the state can give for architectural significance. But that's not why Ellis bought it in 2002 - when it needed complete restoration after years of neglect. It's just one of those places that exudes magic and welcomes light and nurtures creativity. It seems as though a legion of muses live in the oak trees and dance through the windows on sunny days.
What makes this Apartment unique
This is no ordinary "one-bedroom" apartment. It's an enormous loft-style open space on the second floor of the building, with a bank of tall windows overlooking the huge oaks and park-like grounds. Webb School also has wrap-around clerestory windows and that makes it unique among all others on the MS. coast (if you look at the pictures, you'll see the clerestory windows above the regular ones). The way they capture light and sky and space is fantastic. On nights when there's a full moon, wow! Unforgettably romantic. The school's location is out of the main bustle of the harbor area, yet close enough for biking/walking to beach (2 blocks), historic depot park (2 blocks) and Old Town's commercial district with shopping and restaurants (5 blocks).

Light filled nest in giant live oaks.
Comfort and history is what this lovely school house is about. It was hard to leave even for day trips. Great for morning and evening strolls to the beach as well BSL restaurants and shops. Will Be Back.
weekend at good friend's home
Beautiful home in wonderful oak tree setting. Home furnished with lovely antique furniture while being very comfortable and serviceable. Loved the porch and wall to wall books!
We loved having you both! And thank you for leaving the place so neat! You'll have to come back and stay longer to check out more of the library, ;-)
Beautiful and unique location in Bay Saint Louis
The property is terrific and has so much character. It was very clean and well-maintained, with much thought and attention to detail. What I would consider little “extras” were provided to make our stay as comfortable as possible, even down to beach towels and coffee. Ellis was very friendly and helpful and seems to truly enjoy sharing her unique and historical home amongst the gorgeous oak trees with her guests. We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful and special place and if the walls could talk, I would listen for hours!
You will always be welcome back to listen to these walls talk! They've got plenty of sweet stories to tell. Larry and I will look forward to your next stay!
Everything I hoped for!
Very comfortable space with everything you need. The high ceiling and numerous windows make it very special. I couldn't help but wake happy when each morning I was greeted with such a scene as the view from the bedroom window. Very nicely decorated. Truly wonderful place. The town, its people, culture and beach all make this destination unlike any other. I really fell in love with it. Ellis and Larry were beautiful hosts and I thank them for their kindness and hospitality.
I am a retired teacher, so when I found the Webb School on the internet I knew that I had to stay there. If you choose to stay there you must read Ellis Anderson's book, UNDER SIEGE, before you go. It will give you a better appreciation of the school and the resilience of the people of Bay St. Louis. Ellis was very easy to work with. The neighborhood was nice and quiet. Although the house is two blocks from the beach, they are very long blocks, so you will probably want to drive there. That wasn't a problem though. I did enjoy walking in the neighborhood. I felt very safe, and I loved looking at all the cute houses. Bay St. Louis is a very unique town. If you have never been you should put it on your list of places to visit.
