3 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Quiet Location, Mountain Views, Great For Biking or Hiking.
About Gerald Dovel
We have lived in Luray, VA our entire lives, and have always loved it here. 20 years ago after our home was paid for I bought our first monthly rental property on High Street in downtown Luray. It was a big investment, and lots of long nights after work were spent there to bring it into the condition I wanted, but it turned out great. A lot has changed since then, and 1 monthly rental property has turned into 32. Two years ago we decided to expand our horizons and move into more than just monthly rentals, which ultimately led to Old Mine Cottage. It took a two year process to get to today, but the result is a gorgeous property that is ready to be utilized. As we continue to grow in the business world we invite you to come and stay with us. Let us know how we did. We think you will be impressed.

What makes this Cottage unique
This property offers a unique location in a quiet, rural area of our county. It is only two and one half miles from the main highway. Yet it is set on miles of paved country roads with very little traffic. Perfect location for biking enthusiasts.

Really relaxing and cozy
Quaint, but flawed
We stayed here two nights in February 2019. We were hiking in SNP and needed a place to unwind, make meals, and sleep. Thanks to Gerald for his politeness, and allowing us to stay the weekend. We thought the place had potential, but in the end it just didn't have enough charm to mask the flaws.
-hot tub is great, if over chlorinated
-kitchen is fairly well-stocked, though the cookware is worn-out
-nice bbq grill
-the owners have a hands-off/minimal communication approach, which we appreciated
-the place was FILLED with house flies when we arrived. Swatters are available, but after killing dozens the first day, we found dozens more the next day. We were careful to keep the doors closed, but still they appeared. It's more than annoying, it's overwhelming. Obviously an ongoing problem, since we found dead flies in the shower, the kitchen sink, and in all corners of the house
-the cleanliness is a problem. There was an old empty soda can under one bed, mouse droppings in a couple spots, the bugs, cobwebs, and a lot of dust. It's a house on a farm, so some pests and dirt are understandable, but this was excessive
-the mattresses in two of the three rooms are really old/worn and need to be replaced. We slept really poorly throughout the stay
-regarding the train whistle, it's much louder upstairs than down, but upstairs is the only decent mattress...so, a no-win situation
Overall, it was decent value for the location, but we'll go elsewhere next time unless we see that changes have been made.
Comfy cabin surrounded by mountains
My friends and I had a great time at this cabin. It has everything you need to have a great time—fire pit, hot tub, and access to hiking trails close by. We’re looking forward to coming back!
Location is great for hiking in the park
We enjoyed our stay at this house. We were there for a few days of hiking in Shenandoah - it's about a 15 min drive from the house to the park entrance. The house is very secluded which was what we wanted - nice yard to run around in with the kids and the dog. Hot tub was an added bonus. One thing to mention - bring earplugs as the train is pretty close and it blows it's whistle each time it goes by which is about 4 times/day including the middle of the night.
We enjoyed our Christmas stay at this cottage. The location was peaceful and secluded yet close to downtown Luray where we enjoyed dining, shopping and visiting the caverns. The bedrooms were clean and quite large as was the the bath with it's lovely claw foot tub. I especially enjoyed the soft train whistle as it came through the crossing - loved hearing it. Kitchen cabinets and drawers could have been better organized but we had no plan of doing major cooking this visit. Enjoyed our stay very much and our host was accomodating.
We loved the location, the decor, the privacy.
Very nice place and we will likely come back!!
The only suggestion for improvement would be to change the living room furniture-- not comfortable at all. Luckily the weather was beautiful and we spent alot of time outside. Hot tub was perfect! We grilled each night and enjoyed firepit. Perfect location!
Old Mine Cottage is less than three miles from the main highway, (US-211) yet it is a world away from the norm. If you want a quiet setting with beautiful views, Old Mine Cottage will more than meet your needs. We are located close to the downtown area of Luray, with its' quaint shopping, restaurants, and the iconic 'Pink' movie theater. We are within 10 miles of a wide variety of activities, such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone park, which provides mini-golf, an arcade for kids, and a water slide. The Caverns Country club is a very short drive up US-211 and provides a beautiful and competitive challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The Luray Caverns are a 5 mile drive away and are a world famous, must see attraction. If you like to bike you will find miles of paved country roads with very little traffic. If you like to hike there are miles of trails close by. If doing nothing sounds good you will be more than happy at the cottage as well! You can relax on the decks, enjoy the hot tub, the fire pit, the ten acres of property or the cottage itself. We bought the property in 2012 and have carefully returned it to the time period of its construction. It has been a labor of love and we believe that you will love it too. We welcome you to come and experience it.
