About James Foster

We are retired and currently live in Scotland. We use our holiday home ourselves for extended periods and because of this we like to think of it as our home from home. We have travelled extensively throughout Italy but for us Puglia meets all our needs: good weather with hot summers and mild winters, good fresh food, good wine, nice beaches, interesting sites and friendly people who tolerate our attempts to speak Italian.

James Foster purchased this villa in 2005

Why James Foster chose Brindisi

Puglia is region of varied landscapes from hills to plains, rocky to sandy beaches, quaint old towns and modern shopping complexes. It has interesting history, art and cuisine so there is lots to do and see. All these things are within easy reach of the house yet it is in a tranquil setting amid the olive groves. We called it Casa Serendipita` because it means Serendipity (a lucky find). When we saw the property it was derelict but we saw the potential in it to be a comfortable and welcoming second home.

What makes this villa unique

We wanted a trullo with their high cone shaped ceilings, alcoves and arches but with this house we had the added bonus of a bedroom (not just a bed in an alcove), a kitchen (not just a kitchenette in the living room) and internal connections to these rooms, so no going outside in the cold and the dark. From the roof we have views to Ostuni and San Vito Dei Normanni across the vast expanse of olive groves. Casa Serendipita` has a patio the full length of the property from where you can appreciate the quirkiness of the outline the various extensions produce whilst lying in the shade of the old almond tree or whilst eating the pizza you cooked in the original forno (pizza/bread oven). The land hasn't been destroyed by spraying so we get beautiful wild flowers in winter and spring but the land has to be ploughed in summer to reduce the fire risk. The property is set close to but not next to good roads and is centrally located for access to San Michele, San Vito Dei Normanni, Ceglie Messapica and Ostuni .

"Nous avons trouvé que les photos de l'intérieur ne correspondaient pas vraiment à la réalité. En effet, le salon était très petit et sombre. Nous avons de gros ennuis avec l'alarme et l'équipement de la cuisine aurait pu être plus complet (vaisselle). Sinon, endroit très calme et nous avons apprécié qu'une dame, très gentille, soit venue faire un nettoyage intermédiaire et refaire le lit."

Owner's Response: The photos on the Homelidays website were taken with an ordinary camera with an ordinary lens. I do not say in the description, on the website, that it is large: it is a one bedroom place with a sofa bed in the lounge. By comparing common items in the pictures it is possible to ascertain that the living room/lounge is not large and I make no claim that it is. There are no large windows in the lounge (main trullo part) as traditionally they did not have them: there is, however, a half-glazed door which provides natural light and a 125 watt crystal chandelier (lounge) and a 75 watt one (dining area). The walls and ceiling cones are white. If the furniture is dark that is our taste and can be clearly seen in the photos. In the kitchen there is a duel fuel cooker; tall fridge/freezer; toaster; microwave; kettle; full set of crockery (dinner service) and cutlery enough for six people at one sitting; at least six pans; casserole dishes; wine glasses, large glasses, measuring jug, etc. etc. The property is advertised as accommodation for 1 to 4 people. There is nothing listed in the advert that is not there. Therefore I believe that it conforms to the advert. I am sorry about the alarm. There was a major problem with the unit and it has been replaced. I am happy that they found the cleaner nice as the previous manager/ cleaner was dismissed in July 2011 after complaints that the property was not clean plus other problems. The new manager and cleaner seem to be doing a better job.

Many restaurants offering traditional cuisine can be found in Ostuni, San Michelle and Ceglie but, if you prefer your own cooking locally grown produce is available at the Saturday Market in Ostuni or the Thursday Market in San Michele as well as the local village shops.

There are historic sites and historic churches and museums to visit in Ostuni, Ceglie Messapica, San Vito dei Normanni, Locorotundo, Lecce Taranto and Brindisi. There is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello and the archeological site at Egnazia as well as the even older caves of the Grotte di Castellana for visitors to explore. For something different to do there is Go'Karting near San Vito di Normanni, the Zoo Safari and Amusement Park at Selva di Fasano and a local vineyard at the Hotel Relias di Fontanina. There is a wide selection rocky coves to sandy beaches within about 30 minutes drive. Water sports and fishing are available on the nearby Adriatic and Ionian coasts.

Details of festivals and other activities is available in a Welcome Pack at the property and our local housekeeper is full of useful information.
