Overview

Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 3-5)

Paul's Cottage is the year-round home where my father-in-law spent his retirement years. Built to resemble a New England barn, the spacious pine-paneled living room features a cathedral ceiling and a granite fireplace that is likely the largest you have ever seen!

There is a bedroom with queen size bed and full bath on the first floor. Over the kitchen and bedroom is a loft area with a full bath and two bedrooms, one with a queensize bed, the other with a small twin and sitting area with skylight. You will absolutely love the new dormer in the upstairs bedroom especially when you are able to look out on to Blue Hill Bay and enjoy the stars and the moon traveling across the clear dark sky. (Due to the relatively small size of the loft bedrooms we limit the total number of guests to five, no exceptions, please.)

Our newly renovated kitchen is well equipped for cooking and serving, with amenities including gas cooktop & oven, microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher and breakfast table.

Mealtime is always more enjoyable with a view of the water. You can sit in front of the window in the dining area or simply go outside to use the picnic table on the deck. In the corner of the living room next to a window with a waterfront view, the landlady insisted on having a game table because she loves to play scrabble, bridge or canasta. Yes, it is a great place to use your computer and we do offer wireless internet connection for those who insist on making contact with the outside world. However, we suggest that you just sit and relax in the large wicker chairs in the living room............relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Perhaps the best thing to do after all is just step through the large sliding glass doors onto a 400 square foot deck and enjoy the panoramic view of Blue Hill Bay.

We are located between Mitchell and Duck Cove on the western side of Mount Desert Island, so you will find that the spectacular sunsets probably will take your breath away.

As one of my tenants said the minute he got out of the car, 'I think that you have a little bit of heaven here'. I do believe that he is correct. I have to say I do leave a little bit of my heart behind every time I leave Mount Desert Island.

So come and experience the peace and quiet of your home away from home and leave your cares behind.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

l) We rent our cottages by the week, Saturday to Saturday

2) A deposit is required with 7 days to hold your reservation. Refund of deposits can only be made if we are successful in re-renting the entire period.

Ideal getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been going to Mt. Desert Island for over 45 years to enjoy the spectacular ocean walks and views, mountains, and lakes that the island offers. As much as we loved our twice (or thrice) annual trips to Acadia, the noisy motels/hotels and long restaurant lines were becoming tiresome and diminished our level of enjoyment. We'd often rented cottages elsewhere but had never found a cottage in the Bar Harbor area that we liked until we stumbled upon Paul's Cottage. What we ideally had wanted was a cottage on the ocean with a fireplace that offered both privacy and easy access to Acadia Park. After spending a fall and spring week in Paul's Cottage this past year, we have found it a perfect fit for us, offering many amenities including the following.

- situated right on the shore with stunning westerly island and sunset views

- welcoming, friendly, and accommodating owners (available but not intrusive)

- a large updated kitchen not wanting for anything

- fresh lobster and other seafood, produce, groceries, etc. available within a short drive

- very good restaurants (especially in season) if desired

- Acadia Park sites within easy driving distance

- various books and games to enjoy by the huge fireplace (endless supply of firewood available) or on the

spacious deck overlooking the water

- the Southwest Harbor Library issues guest passes for non-residents for supplemental reading choices

We are very much looking forward to our two-week stay this fall and are considering a winter visit at some point.

Paul's Cottage is wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to Paul's Cottage for many years. The cottage satisfied a dream we had

for a long time. We have been coming to Maine since the middle 1950's and the idea of

buying a place on the ocean in Maine had become a strong wish but we could never

afford it. Later, with improved financial circumstances, one could contemplate buying a

place in Maine, however, then there was simply not enough time to maintain and worry

about additional property. Paul's cottage is a perfect answer. It is in an absolutely beautiful

location on the water on one of the loveliest places on the East coast. The place is better

equipped with amenities than our house in Newton and best of all, when things age and

break, we find them repaired and often improved the next year. We cannot think of a

better deal!

Carpenter Ants

  • 2 of 5

This is a perfectly pleasant cottage in a private location, a stone’s throw from the owner’s home so if there are issues, there’s somebody on site to try to help. Decent kitchen and living space, relatively comfortable sleeping accommodations. The fireplace is huge, a nice feature that we utilized to make s’mores during the summer week we spent there. All of that said, unfortunately the thing I’ll remember most about the house were the ants.

We saw big carpenter ants every day, in every room, on the floors, on the couch, on tables, on chairs, and a few times, in our beds. The owners, Kathy and Jay, said that this normally doesn’t happen this time of year, but when we checked in on Saturday, there were already a few dozen dead ants in the sliding area for the glass door leading to the back deck, which means the problem could’ve and should’ve been diagnosed prior to our arrival. Kathy dropped some pellets on the exterior that did nothing to reduce the population, and so on the Monday after our Saturday check-in we insisted they call an exterminator. I don’t know if the treatment benefited the people who stayed after us, but we saw no reduction in the ant population while we were there.

Kathy was sensitive to the issue after overcoming her reluctance to call an exterminator, but any follow-up was initiated by us. We never received an unsolicited check-in to see if the problem was improving, and the issue merited no mention or apology when we saw her on the morning we left after our week-long stay (Jay was away). In an email exchange after we checked out, Jay indicated that they don’t look to control the problem with an exterminator because “We, and our other guests, have viewed the ants as an annoyance, but something that did not warrant the human exposure to the exterminator's materials.” I can only speak for myself, but I would think that most people would opt for a responsible exterminator doing his job over ants crawling into bed with the kids.

Why 2 stars instead of 1? Under ant-free conditions it’s a nice cottage with a lovely view of the water. That said, for visitors deciding whether or not to stay here, I’d be concerned this issue could recur unpredictably. The owners indicated this was normally an early spring problem, but the fact that it occurred in mid-August means that the ants have decided not to abide by a predictable schedule.

Owner's Response: Jay and I, with over 40 years history with this property, have had countless satisfied guests. The exterminator's visit had the desired effect and the next tenant saw only a handful of ants during their stay and those were dead. Unfortunately, that did not resolve the problem when the reviewing guest was in the cottage. We regret their discomfort. On the recommendation of the exterminator, we have made landscaping improvements around the cottage foundation to limit wood cellulose materials the ants find inviting. We will also continue a regular application of insecticide round the exterior perimeter of the foundation to discourage migration of the ants from the surrounding spruce forest. We will only be using insecticide material on the interior as a last resort. We believe that caution is in keeping with the sensitivities of our guests. As resident owners, we are committed to treating every guest as we would want to be be treated. Our history of satisfied guests seems to suggest we must be generally doing it right. That said, we have learned from this experience and will do everything we can to avoid the ant problem for future guests.

Our Winter Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed Paul's cottage for our last seven February vacations. Mt Desert Island in the winter is fantastic! A day cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in Acadia is scenic and beautifully quiet. Returning to the cottage each afternoon and enjoying the fireplace, warm beverages, water views, sunsets and seabirds visible right outside the cottage window is heavenly. Sleeping in the loft bedroom, watching the moon, stars and lighthouse beacons is as romantic as it gets. Paul's cottage has everything you need, Kathy is extremely helpful, and we will keep returning to this amazing location. The pictures show it all except the tranquility of winter. We do recommend Paul's cottage to our friends but only if they promise not to compete for our week!

A week in Acadia

  • 5 of 5

I've used VRBO a lot, and Paul's Cabin is one of the nicest places I have rented. It has fantastic views looking southwest toward Blue Hill Bay (winter sunsets over the water), a large fire place, a well-equipped kitchen, good internet and access to the beautiful carriage roads of Acadia National Park. A great place to come home to after a day of snow showing. It was hard to leave.
