About James Ormston
I own Upper Hillsborough with my long-time friend and business associate, Steven. We're both Realtors with Bosley Real Estate Brokerage in Toronto, Ontario. Steven, who operates his urbaneer division, has been with Bosley for many years, and myself, many fewer! We've been fast and fabulous friends since meeting while attending the University of Victoria. I'm originally from Summerland, British Columbia, having moved to Toronto in 1988 to pursue my education and my career as an orchestral musician. In the time since, I've performed with many of Canada's finest ensembles including the Toronto Symphony, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company, and played music in places as far flung and varied as Charlottetown, Hong Kong, and Edinburgh. Since 1999, I've been lucky enough to call Charlottetown home during the summer months thanks to my long involvement as a musician at the Charlottetown Festival.

Why James Ormston chose Charlottetown
12 Upper Hillsborough at time of purchase in 2008 was a true diamond-in-the-rough: solid, tons of character, and well-situated to Old Charlottetown on a wonderful street shared with many fellow artists and artisans! We fell in love with it's quirkiness, it's history, and it's outstanding potential. The Black House boasts close proximity to all the things nearby that make Charlottetown a truly wonderful place to visit. It's our hope your stay with us will be one of your most memorable!

A gorgeous home-away-from-home in the centre of Charlottetown!
Our stay at The Black House (2nd floor suite) went beyond our expectations. We were incredibly impressed with the attention to detail - the team thought of everything we could need to make our stay comfortable (and it really looks just as pretty as it does in the pictures!). We arrived quite late at night and were pleasantly surprised to find the fridge stocked so that we wouldn't have to go out for breakfast first thing the next day - a great start to a great stay. The location is only a few minutes' walk to the main shopping/entertainment area in Charlottetown so it was nice not to have to drive there and worry about parking. The gorgeous back balcony gets a little buggy at dusk, so perhaps bring a little bug spray, but we weren't too bothered and spent loads of time there reading, eating, and playing cards.
Would definitely recommend staying here, and we look forward to returning one day!
Elegant and cozy, luxurious and full of Island charm
The second floor suite of The Black House is at once elegant and cozy, luxurious and full of Island charm. Every artful and practical detail in the suite has been meticulously taken care of, making our stay effortless and refreshing. Not only is the decor exceptionally beautiful, but also comfortable and welcoming.
In fact, we liked The Black House so much that we found ourselves anticipating rainy days so we could cuddle up in its cozy corners and cook in its fabulously equipped kitchen! This was a delightful and inspiring place to come home to during our stay in Charlottetown.
Hi Jennifer! James and I are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at The Black House, and that you found it well-appointed and comfortable. This suite retains a lot of the original charm and character of the original house, such that we were careful to keep our renovations and décor respectful of the original history of the house, which dates from the 1880s. Did you know we had the vintage staircase restored, and renovated the kitchen and bath to feel like they've always been there even though they're completely up to date? While we were wildly over-budget on this reno, we have zero regrets, as it has that curl-up-with-a-book patina that we love when we're staying there. I especially love how all the rooms radiate off the original centre hall, which creates different zones for living and allows everyone to feel like they have their own special space in the house. When I visit, I'm either reading on the covered porch or listening to old vinyl records on our Philco stereo in the sitting room. Either way, time seems to stand still when we stay here, making it the ultimate get-away. Please know we welcome your return, anytime. And thank you for staying at The Black House! James and Steven
