Overview

About the property

View of Green Mts of Vermont from an elevation of 1650 ft

No, we don't make maple syrup here! But, the principal of a sugar house gave me the idea for this design. This house is a custom cape with a real 10' cupola in the center of the roof providing natural light on a stairway leading to the upper level. This four bedroom, two and one half bath custom built home makes a perfect get-a-way with a comfortable, inviting interior. The main open floor plan, with its hemlock beams, offers loads of room to cook a favorite meal or quietly hideout with a good book. You might sit on the back porch and enjoy a 20 mile view of Vermont or take a quiet walk in the woods to the spring-fed brook and water garden.

About Joe Mercaldi

I had this house built starting in the mid-90's by two local carpenters. The trees on my property were cut and used for the rough framing lumber and the hemlock beams you see inside. This was a design I adapted to suite my desires and needs. So now this house has become my retirement home and since I do a good bit of traveling, I thought I might share this place with others.

Joe Mercaldi purchased this house in 1999

Why Joe Mercaldi chose Massachusetts

The town of Heath is nestled on the eastern side of the Berkshires tucked up against the Vermont state line. It is quiet, picturesque and home to 700 hearty soules.

This 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath custom built home (built 1999) is the perfect get-a-way. You might be in the woods but the whole-house generator will keep the lights going no matter what the weather. But, don't let this description fool you into thinking there is nothing to see or do.

What makes this house unique

Berkshire East Resort is a short 15 minute drive to year-round activities: Winter skiing, snowboarding and tubing or summer fun including a mountain coaster, mountain biking, zip-line, and white water rafting. Kayaking, fishing and hiking is all close by.

Do you like museums? Within 1 hrs. you can drive to the Clark Museum (Williamstown, MA), the Smith College (Northhampton, MA), Amherst College and the University of Mass.(Amherst, MA) museums.

How about seeing the town where several major motion pictures were filmed - Labor Day (2014) and The Judge (2014). Shelburne Falls is a short 15 minute trip back in time. This interesting little town has great restaurants, the historic Bridge of Flowers, the glacial pot holes and shopping. Did I mention shopping and Yankee Candle's flagship store (South Deerfield, MA), Kringle Candle (Bernardston, MA)?

The American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr summered in Heath and delivered the Senerity Prayer at the Union Church for the first time in the summer of 1943.

Beautiful, Quiet and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This home was the perfect location for many activities in the area. The house was beautiful, clean, roomy and very comfortable. The owner, Joe, met us when we arrived and gave us a brief overview of the home. He was very nice and pleasant to work with! Highly recommend this great home. Thanks for sharing your home, Joe!

Slice of Country Pie

  • 5 of 5

Architectural masterpiece with the functionality of accommodating large groups. Three levels and three bathrooms, two family rooms with televisions. Great internet connectivity considering our cell phones barely worked. The air conditioning worked like it should even though it was the 90 degree weather in late July. The owner was very attentive and checked in multiple times. Owner says it is more popular in winter than summer but we don't see how when Ziplining, whitewater rafting and Berkshire East are all close. Great nature trail down mountain to stream on property if you want exercise or need to get away from group. Back deck has a great view. Kitchen was open just the way we like. Very nice piece of property. We had a group from 11 to 85 and everybody loved it.

Fantastic House!

  • 5 of 5

We were in the area for a wedding and this was the perfect home base! The house and yard are gorgeous and the well-equipped kitchen is a joy to cook in. The bedrooms are comfortable and conveniently spread out, which was perfect for our mix of early and late risers. Joe was great to work with and has thought of everything one could want or need in a vacation rental and then some. The Sugar House is definitely on our list for future family vacations!

A lovely home, a fabulous host, and all the extras you could want

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about Joe and his thoughtfully designed and outfitted getaway. We (myself, my husband, our toddler and his spunky grandma) decided on a Monday that we wanted to rent this home for a long weekend, since the weather looked good for biking at nearby Thunder Mountain. I sent an email, Joe immediately got back to me, and the plan was quickly put in place with zero fuss. The house is gorgeous, it had everything we needed and more, and everything is very logically organized (we even made a game of thinking of kitchen items or staples we needed--or vaguely wished for--for this meal or that, and then finding them, with great success). Joe proved to be as lovely in person as he is on the phone, and we had a wonderful weekend. Even getting caught in the rain one afternoon wasn't a problem, because, hey, laundry! The grounds are lovely as is the house itself, with touches of family that don't overwhelm. Thank you, Joe, for letting us stay at your Sugar House. If we're back in the area and need a place to stay, you'll be our first contact :)

A great house in a beautiful Area !

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Sugar house . We came with three 13 years old boys to hike, swim ,water rafting, and be in the middle of the nature ! A success ! The house is very spacious , plenty of rooms and spaces for everyone . A great family house with a lot of attention to details. We cooked every night in a well equipped kitchen , so it was a real pleasure . We explore Western Massachusetts and South Vermont and we recommend Sugar House as a wonderful place to stay .

A wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for a family trip - 8 of us stayed there, with additional family coming for meals. It is the most wonderful place, that feels like a happy house. It is large and has many seating places which suits a family of all ages. We went kayaking close by, and explored the surrounding area which is beautiful. The kitchen is really well equipped and there is a 'barbi' on the deck, so we could cook out. Lots of extras were provided and appreciated - sauces, trash bags, spices - on an honor system, to replace if a lot is used. So useful for short trips and a great touch. It really felt like a home from home and I recommend it to anyone exploring Western Massachusetts.
