great location in Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

We recently enjoyed a 2 week stay at La Maison de la Peintre. Happy to add another 5 star review for this property. All expectations were met. The house is very clean, roomy, and ideally situated for exploring Domme and the local countryside.

There's much to see and do in Domme itself .... a weekly outdoor market, a beautiful town square with restaurants, boulangerie, medieval church (attended a wonderful choral concert on Sunday evening), post office, very helpful visitors' center with free WIFI, a cave under the village that one can tour, beautiful vista point overlooking the valley and river, good restaurants, shops, and quaint streets.

We found plenty of other attractions close by and only traveled an hour away on two days. The house is close to the town square, but off on a little street with not much traffic. Michael, the proprietor, is very personal and engaging. He makes his guests feel very welcomed.

Absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Michael was so charming, helpful and welcoming - even a bottle of local wine on the table to welcome us. He is a wonderful host and we totally enjoyed this most beautiful house in Domme. It is only 3 doors from the main square/shops & restaurants. Michael's house plus all the narrow roads & other buildings (& caves) in Domme and the surrounding areas are stunning. I would go back tomorrow if I could. We were so, so sorry to leave. Thank you so much Michael for making us so welcome and for sharing your beautiful house with us. Kind regards from Australia - Di, Ross, Rob & Lorna

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your so kind and friendly feed back. As you understood, my "great pleasure" is to receive at the best in "la maison du peintre" in Domme, so that not only the house is perfect, clean, bright and welcoming to feel "at home" but also you all gave me that pleasure to exchange between us and for me to tell you about the wonderful Domme and Périgord. Kind regards, Michael

A fabulous place

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed 'la maison du peintre' and it was such a treat to be in the centre of Domme but still have our haven of tranquillity. The outside terrace, partly covered, is a great asset. We all enjoyed evening trips to the artisan glacier, just around the corner. The house is well equipped and had everything we needed.

Overall a wonderful spot overlooking the Dordogne and thoroughly recommended. Thank you from Les AngloSuisses

We enjoyed it so much, we booked again....

  • 5 of 5

When we stayed in Maison du Peintre in May 2014 I ended my review by stating that we would be more than happy to book this property again. So we did, visiting this time during the first week in September - proof as to how happy we were to stay here. All of my previous comments still apply - the house is ideally located for a great stay in both Domme and the Dordogne and is very comfortable. Michael, the owner, is very helpful for any queries you may have and since we are happy to re-book and to recommend this property, I’m hoping it won’t be too long before we are back in Domme.

Happy to recommend

  • 5 of 5

The property was ideally placed for a stay in Domme, being moments/meters away from the main square, the esplanade (and the boulangerie...), but very quiet even on market day due to being about 15 meters along a side street that doesn’t get much car traffic. Despite this very central location we were able to park immediately opposite the house every evening, though there is also potential parking in the road at the rear and in the basement garage – very useful given that, based on two previous stays elsewhere in the twon, parking in Domme can often be hard to find. The house itself was exactly as described – the terrace gets the sun from mid morning till early evening, but has shady areas, giving you a choice of sun or shade. Michael, the owner, provided prompt and comprehensive information throughout the booking process and was happy to deal with any queries in advance, or when he met at us at the property on our arrival. We would be more than happy to rebook and to recommend this property to others.

"The minute you begin you...

  • 5 of 5

"The minute you begin you ascent to the Medieval Town of Domme, you just know that you are about to experience a holiday to remember.

Arriving through the Archway of the walled town into a labyrinth of tiny cobbled streets filled with the most exquisite ‘picture postcard’ houses, you then find yourself outside Michaels house which is immediately off the main town square. The square has a selection of cafe’s, a few restaurants, the Museum, library and stunning church. Can things get any better we ask ourselves at this point? Of course they do, we are met by Michael who is possibly one of the nicest people you will have the pleasure of meeting. He greets you with warmth and a bottle of wine! Michael provides you with information about the area and the house is packed with further information to help you decide which areas/places you may wish to visit.

The house really is your home for the duration of your stay – and you simply have everything you need at your fingertips. My husband and myself had chosen to take our elderly parents on holiday, the facilities in the house (especially in the kitchen) are fantastic. Most evenings we chose to cook so that our parents could relax in the wonderfully decorated lounge whilst we set a candlelit table and cooked in the really well equipped kitchen. In addition, the house is so quiet (which is surprising since you are next to the main square) and sleeping is no problem in the large, and tranquil bedrooms.

Domme itself is an amazing place to stay, cultural, interesting with day time being a reasonably busy little town and evenings taking on a very tranquil feeling. Try taking a walk from the house late in the evening about 10.30pm when the few restaurants have closed and there is barely a soul around, it is so quiet and is a wonderful time to walk around the little streets as the light disappears and the stars come out.

We could tell you a million places to visit in the area, Sarlat, Roque St Christophe, Beynac etc.. all of which are within a 30 minute drive. In short, you will be spoilt for choice of things to do/visit.

Whilst we ate most evenings in the house, we had Le Petit Dejeuner, coffee and snacks in a number of the wonderful cafes/restaurants in the town, it is a great place to sit and watch the world go by!

Would we return to Domme and to Michael’s wonderful home? Absolutely yes. You will not be disappointed on all levels. Thank you so much Michael, you offer your quests a fabulous home at very competitive prices in the most amazing town. See you again from the Pullen family!
