Lovely stay June 2017
This is a lovely spacious villa in the pretty village of Porta da Cruz. It is very well looked after by the housekeeper who is very attentive during the stay and deals with any questions or minor issues. The bedrooms are all en-suite and there is even an outdoor hot and cold shower for after your dip in the pool. We ate our meals mostly on the upstairs patio which is suitably furnished with tables and chairs, overlooking the pool with its loungers and umbrellas. Banana and papaya trees and vines grow in the garden. The kitchen is quite small but adequately equipped. Unfortunately the TV receives no British channels but internet access is good.
The village has a small shop and 5 restaurants (Pippa's is the best) and the supermarket in Santana in only a short drive away. This area is very good for accessing beautiful walks.
Hope to return in future. Would highly recommend.
Thank you very much for your words! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! Regarding the TV, the Villa Ricardo has satellite television, so we could easily have changed the satellite, to one that had more British channels. If you had said before, we would have made this change during your stay! Still, I am sure that on an island like Madeira, with so much nature, beauty and sensations to enjoy, the television goes into the background. :) Hope to see you soon again!
Beautiful villa in a lovely village
We had a lovely stay in Villa Ricardo at the end of October. We especially appreciated the warm welcome from Ricardo and Mrs Rubina on arrival at the villa (including wine, cake, bananas and grapes!!).
The villa is very well located for exploring the island and is an easy walk to restaurants, beach and sea pool. It is only a 15 minute drive from the airport and easy to find. We especially enjoyed the cable car at Santana, the walk to Pico Ruivo and the beaches at Machico and Porto da Cruz. There are four very nice restaurants that you can walk to and all are reasonably priced. Bar Pipa was our favourite for atmosphere, but they are all nice.
There is a very small grocery store in the village, but you will need to drive to Machico or Santana for the main shop (Continente).
The house is well equipped with wifi and lots of space in all the rooms (except the kitchen). The pool area is especially nice for sitting around and having lunch/breakfast. The children did find the pool a bit cold, but that may be because it didn't get enough sun?
Mrs Rubina is lovely and wonderfully helpful (she is there to help 24 hours a day!). The house is cleaned twice a week which is a real luxury.
We would love to return to Villa Ricardo one day in the future! Thank you!
Thank you for your words! We're glad you have enjoyed the Villa Ricardo! Certain that we did everything we could, to give you a memorable vacation, I leave you with our warmest regards and wishes for seeing us soon, here on our island!

- Some instructions to arrive by car to Villa Ricardo leaving the airport: Leaving the airport by car, take the motorway in the direction of Machico. Continuing on the expressway, following the signs that lead you to Porto da Cruz. Leave the expressway on the exit with the sign that says “Porto da Cruz”. There, you will find a roundabout and you will take the second exit. Now it is only moving forward on that road to find a crossing with a bridge. The Vila Ricardo is quite visible from the road. The trip from the airport to Porto da Cruz lasts from 12 to 17 minutes.
Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (porto). Once you arrive you'll probably think there's nothing much to do around here. Life seems to have stopped or only to be moving very slowly in this place. But, the attractions of this small parish are hidden and you'll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating the same way, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when it's working you might even see steam coming out! Also not to be missed is the place known as Penha d'Águia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there you'll be sure it was definitely worth it. The views from Penha d'Águia are absolutely amazing!
Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as 'vinho seco americano' (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho). In Porto da Cruz there are another two wonderful religious celebrations, with great beauty. The first occurs on days 15 and 16 of August, and the second, at the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday). They are celebrations that visitors should not miss!!!
