About Mark L. Usry
Texan by birth I grew up in Oklahoma and first became part of the Cape Charles community in 1995. I enjoy the opportunities that are part of spending the last 33 years in higher education classrooms at James Madison University in Virginia for 20 years and currently at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. An empty nest dad of two with 3 four-legged furry family members.
Mark L. Usry purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Mark L. Usry chose Cape Charles
This is my retirement home. This community is an eclectic mix of those who have been here for years and those that have relocated here more recently. It is a chosen community of many artisans, educators, professionals, workmen and entrepreneurs. This is a community that welcomes diversity - racial, faith traditions, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression - of all kinds, you will love it here if you are accepting of that diversity and ..... love amazing sunsets at the beach.
What makes this Cottage unique
A cozy home with a wide front porch and small back porch with a beautiful garden and amazing neighbors.

Great Beach house
Property was beautiful and clean, plenty of room for 6 people, Mark was great to communicate with and answered all questions promptly. Will stay again on our next trip to Cape Charles.
Clean and Comfortable w/ Personality
We’ve stayed in many lovely homes in Cape Charles over the years and Mark’s house definitely wins for cleanest and most personality. It truly felt like we were in a friend’s home more than a rental. Many of the home’s architectural features reminded us of our first and much loved apartment in Richmond’s Church Hill and we also share many of the same antique furniture! Lol. It’s full of art both fun and refined and everything seems thoughtfully placed. It’s a place to relax~ we did not mind no televisions in the bedroom. I think the place ‘might’ be too small for 2 couples even though the sleeping spaces were very comfortable and ample for 2 adult couples, the bathroom situation could be tight. When we had 3 adults (me, hubby and 1 young adult daughter) and our 8 year old, there were a few moments when I felt the pressure of there only being 1 full bath and the downstairs, very cute, toilet. And this isn’t for people with little kids who need a tub. The outdoor shower was terrific! I was happily surprised to find it is an enclosed shower (appears new) even though the description said there was not an enclosed outdoor shower. We loved it. I locked myself out of the house one afternoon with my kids ready to go to the beach and I messaged Mark on the Vrbo app. He was very quick in getting back to me and finding someone who could come by with a key... so grateful! Thanks again, Mark and Sharon! I felt a little bad heating up the big oven for some of our meals that would have easily fit in a toaster oven or air fryer/toaster oven. I didn’t want the air conditioner to come on unnecessarily. The window units in the house keep it very cool if that’s what you like. I actually turned them up a little to warmer because it was too cold for me when I arrived. The washer and dryer is very nice and just off the kitchen. We tried sitting out back a few times but even with our candles, the mosquitoes were just bad everywhere. The garden is a beautiful centerpiece. I encountered the seeetest toad and little bright green tree frogs(?) and hummingbirds were busy every morning in the row of hibiscus that grow so lush along the yard’s border. The neighbors are only on one side, since the post office backs up to the other side, and they were friendly and a kind support when I realized I was locked out of the house. My husband is 6’1”, and wished there was a chair in the living room he could have get comfortable in, if I were to suggest anything in that area. Thanks!
Thank you for kind words but more importantly enjoying my home.
If your looking for a place where there is not a lot of tourists to have a calm vacation, this is the place. The beach is a bay so there is absolutly no wave and you have to walk far in the bay to get water to your knee. Water is pretty hot too. This is a perfect beach for kids since you can let them play without worrying about them getting too far out. The house was clean and everything we needed was there. There is no beach supply so make sure you bring all your gear. The confort of the sitting in the living room for a small group could be improved but it worked.
Loved our return visit
We stayed here last year and enjoyed our stay even more this year. The location, the outdoor amenities, and the accommodations are perfect for a Cape Charles vacation!
Great house and close to everything !
House and gardens are beautiful!
Photos do not do justice!
This house is absolutely STUNNING in person! From the neighborhood, to the gorgeous furniture, the fun decor, and the house’s own character and personality. The kitchen & linens are just as well stocked as home. Mark was a dream to book with. He was very responsive and attentive to all communications. My family and I had a wonderful vacation and settled right in almost as soon as we stepped through the door. Would definitely stay here again!
So glad that you all had a wonderful time at my home and in Cape Charles. Thank you for the kind and complementary comments about my home.
My best. Mark
