Old trulli stone villa, one of only three houses in the contrada, deep in the Puglian countryside. Set in the beautiful Valley d'Itria it has five double bedrooms, handmade super king size mattresses, 3 modern bathrooms (2 with bidet), kitchen set in local stone, stone flooring and towering conical ceilings crossed by old wooden beams. Handmade wooden doors to each room. Modern white goods, windows with integral mosquito nets. The house has its own cistern (well) under the house, bbq, forno for cooking outdoors (pizza and foccacia), 15m x 5m pool (with deep end) and jumping board, pool toys, outside seating for 20 on 16 foot long stone table with pergola. Seating area around the pool with large umbrellas. The kitchen is completely equipped for cooks, including cookery books in English.
The famous Italian cycling path is 2 minutes from the house and is the one the official 'The Way of the Trulli' section.
Our visit our local buddhist centre, world famous Bhole Baba where you can practise yoga or join in the meditation.
Sit under the ancient olive trees or pick your own figs whilst watching the sun set over the valley with a glass of local Primitivo wine, which can be bought from the local Upal cooperativa at ridiculously low prices.
Evening meals can be catered for an extra charge directly to the local cook. They can also provide local food cookery classes.
You will find vegetables growing in the garden, please use them. Also all the fruit or nuts in our fields that are ripe are free for your use, please help yourselves. We also leave dried foods in the pantry, if they are there you are free to use them.
We have lots of cook books, dictionaries and maps for your use as well. We leave plenty of DVDs, CDs, stationery, extra lightbulbs, loo paper, and often soap powder. Please use all the games (Articulate, Chess, Draughts, cards, Risk etc) and well over 60 books some in foreign languages.
We have volley ball, pool ball, football (and mini goals) in addition to the full size ping pong table.
There is plenty to see around the area and the beaches are lovely, but for peace and quiet, just sit by the pool watch the buttlerflies and housemartins whilst looking at the view or take a stroll around Cisternino late at night after a wonderful dinner at Il Taverna del Torre, picking up a handmade iceceam on the way in Glaciale Era. Check out some of the trendy bars in Cisternino or just visit a traditional cafe for an espresso and cornetto (cream filled crossiant).
Please note bedroom 5 on the roof has not got a bathroom next to it.
We have an automatic pool cleaning robot which you can put in every night so you don't wake up to bugs on the bottom. The pool man comes weekly.
The pool does not have a fence around it but the whole garden (two fields) has.
The flowers are beautiful around the pool and we have pomegranate trees and oleander bushes along the fence on one side, creating a lovely colour wall.
We have two outdoor showers so that you can wash after a swim and plenty of space to dry clothes.
You will find wood and kindling for the pizza forno and details of how to make the dough and cook the pizzas at the house.
A family from London and Denmark who love their home in Italy. We have local friends now to whom we speak dreadful Italian but we speak it enthusiastically! We love the local food and wine and always try to buy from local shops. Please enjoy our home.
Sharon Bierer purchased this villa in 2004
It is surrounded by countryside, is quiet, has beautiful views and wonderful neighbours who have lived in this contrada for centuries.
The house is 200 years old and has such character. It is so close to Cisternino and shops but still very 'unknown'.
Character, beautiful trees and country life going on around one. Sitting on the roof drinking a glass of wine watching the sun go down over the valley. Reading a book on the hammock or lazing in the pool. Neighbours, not an agent, who live next door and who are available immediately for any issues. Eating on our 16' (4 metre table) stone table, watching the butterflies.
Dear Mrs Bierer,
Many thanks to your “hostess” Imma (?), who has been very helpful in letting us use her baby chair for our grandson. It took some driving up and down to Brindisi.
Anyway I should warn eventual coming quests with babies, that AVIS, Brindisi, does not see the difference between a baby chair and a children’s chair, although at booking there is a baby chair alternative in the form.
On the whole we all are very satisfied with our week in your Trulli. One extra plus is its location on a hill which gives cool air.
At last I will have to report a theft: In the commotion around the baby chair a forgot to refill your Limoncello stock, which entitles you to deduct the price of 1 bottle (€25, I believe) from the refund amount.
Mille grazie ed arrivederci!
We arrived late saturday evening and were welcomed by the most friendly italian neighbours, who made sure we were well accommodated. The house was nice and warm, there was fresh fruit, biscuits, water and wine, ready for a quick goodnight snack.
The next morning it was a beautiful sunny morning. It was easy to find our way in the well equipped kitchen and establish a breakfast on the terrace under the porch. What a view!! A wonderful garden, a neat pool and the blue sky above. Time for an easy day by the pool.
In the house there is a very personal guidebook to the local area: Cesternino, Martina Franca, the bicycle path on the viaducts, the local inns etc. Also wonderful, very local advice about the cats and dogs that come by the house, if kids or adults are fond of pets. Very cute and friendly animals, by the way.
The house is very well suited for five adults staying for a whole week. The living/dining room works perfectly as the gathering point, when the weather keeps you inside in the evening. With three bathrooms the logistics getting out of the house works well. It is a very well functioning house.
The architecture is a great experience. Beautiful lime stone walls, very tasteful combination of modern functionality and old building tradition. Trullo life is something different in the nicest way!
Ostuni is a beatiful town. So is Tarranto. Very nice walking streets and harbour area. Take a closer look and you will find out about italian corruption and neglect.
We recommend visiting the ecological olive production Antica Masseria Brancati, with trees more than 3000 years old and a roman basement with production facilities.
Rent this house and you will be gifted with a wonderful stay in the nicest house situated in a great area with a lot to experience.
We usually stay at the smaller trulli next door but this year we had four extra in the group.
The property is a little quirky at first . You have to walk through bedrooms to access other bedrooms and a funky little room on the roof !
Saying that we fell in love with the quirky !
Great location for Cisternino, Martina Franca , Alberobello and the beaches aren't far away. There is a good supermarket 5 mins away with a decent deli counter.
As with most places in the area you will need a car.
Overall I'd recommend the villa highly.
Beautiful pool area like a 5* resort.
We had a fantastic week in the Trulli..Thank you.
Highlights were enjoying the outside pool area and eating our evening meals on the long table under the canopy as we were blessed with near perfect weather. The dog and cat visitors were charming and enhanced the atmosphere!
Any questions or problems were quickly answered and dealt with by the neighbouring housekeepers and we were impressed and thankful that Paolo worked into the evening in fact until10pm to repair a problem with the boiler.
WiFi was effective. Beds were massive and comfortable.
Highly recommended. Thank you again.
Our family of 5 adults spent a fantastic week in June at Contrada Fantese. This charming Trulli conversion has been completed to a very high standard – combining original features with top quality accommodation.
This villa is superbly equipped – both inside and out. We made full use of the large pool, table tennis, hammocks, sun loungers, BBQ and pizza oven. The kitchen has absolutely everything needed to make full use of the fabulous local ingredients - a supermarket within a few minutes’ drive supplied everything we needed to try out some of the tempting recipes we found.
The bedrooms are light, spacious and airy –with top quality beds and linen. Should you wish to stay in there are DVDs, games and a comprehensive library of books – the owners have thought of everything!
If you can be tempted to leave the villa there are many sights to see within a short drive – the nearby town of Cisternino was a favourite with beautiful views and great coffee and ice cream. Ostuni and the beach are also within an easy drive.
We left with some lovely memories – determined to return for a longer holiday! Highlights were home-made pizzas, fabulous local food and wine and the lovely surroundings of this beautiful villa. Something for all the family with the reassurance of support from the owner and neighbours if needed – perfect!
just returned from a week staying in Contrada Fantese with a group of friends and we all had a brilliant time. The style of the villa is unique and everything inside was in great condition, especially the kitchen which is very well equipped. The villa was clean when we arrived and nothing broke or didn't work during our stay. The outside area is the villa's best aspect - a big swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers; a huge dining table in the shade and a lovely elevated area for having drinks with great views over the surrounding countryside.
Sharon, the owner, was extremely helpful before we arrived giving us recommendations for restaurants and local towns to visit. Cisternino and nearby Martina Franca are both beautiful hilltop towns, and we spent some lovely evenings there eating the local food and drinking the wine. Having a car is a must if you want to really explore the area. Sharon told me about a tennis club near to the villa which was a great find - the owners were friendly lending us rackets and balls, and the courts weren't too expensive to hire.
All in all we had a memorable holiday and I would highly recommend the villa to anyone, be it a family or a big group of friends.
Puglia is unique and a stunning area to stay....so many places to visit.
If thats not enough then Contrada Fantese is one of the best villas we have ever stayed in...and we've done many! First of all the building itself...just look at the photos. But it is so well equipped inside and the pool and outdoor area perfect for a family holiday....and you can use the pizza oven !
Sharon is a perfect host - very helpful in the run up and clearly very attentive and proud of her wonderful property. Also, with really top Wifi connection leaving all the kids happy and the Grown Ups pretending to do local research but picking up their work emails!
A great week - wish we'd booked two
Contrada Fantese is an old masseria (old farm), consisting of only three properties/homes. Our neighbours are locals who farm the land and mend the surrounding trulli. It lies in the middle of the valley d'Itria, surrounded by fields and there are superb views of Locorontondo and Cisternino from the garden. The area is close to all the famous towns of the area, Martina Franca, Alberobello, Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica (renown for its restaurants). The sea is about 25 minutes drive away with beautiful sandy beaches. The area is full of wild flowers, olive, fig, walnut and almond trees and local vineyards.
Cycle on the famous Italian cycling routes (2 minutes from the villa), visit the Bhole Baba buddhist centre for yoga and meditation, run through the countryside, visit the vineyards, cheese shops.

Holidaymakers should read the confirmation of booking letter and contract carefully before paying the first payment to the owner so that they can assure themselves that they are happy to accept the terms and conditions in particular that there is no fence around the swimming pool only around the property itself.
