Old trulli villa, child friendly, gardens, private pool, WIFI, 25 min to sea

Bedrooms 5
Space 3,229 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Sleeps 10 in 5 double bedrooms, 3 modern bathrooms, modern conveniences

Old trulli stone villa, one of only three houses in the contrada, deep in the Puglian countryside. Set in the beautiful Valley d'Itria it has five double bedrooms, handmade super king size mattresses, 3 modern bathrooms (2 with bidet), kitchen set in local stone, stone flooring and towering conical ceilings crossed by old wooden beams. Handmade wooden doors to each room. Modern white goods, windows with integral mosquito nets. The house has its own cistern (well) under the house, bbq, forno for cooking outdoors (pizza and foccacia), 15m x 5m pool (with deep end) and jumping board, pool toys, outside seating for 20 on 16 foot long local stone table with pergola. Seating area around the pool with large umbrellas. The kitchen is completely equipped for cooks, including cookery books in English.

The famous Italian cycling path is 2 minutes from the house and is the one the official 'The Way of the Trulli' section.

Or visit our local buddhist centre, world famous Bhole Baba where you can practise yoga or join in the meditation.

Sit under the ancient olive trees or pick your own figs whilst watching the sun set over the valley with a glass of local Primitivo wine, which can be bought from the local Upal cooperativa at ridiculously low prices.

Evening meals can be catered for an extra charge directly to the local cook. They can also provide local food cookery classes.

Also all the fruit or nuts in our fields that are ripe are free for your use, please help yourselves. We also leave dried foods in the pantry, if they are there you are free to use them.

We have lots of cook books, dictionaries and maps for your use as well. We leave plenty of DVDs, CDs, stationery, extra lightbulbs and batteries. Please use all the games (Articulate, Chess, Draughts, cards, Risk etc) and well over 60 books some in foreign languages.

We have volley ball, pool ball, football (and mini goals) in addition to the full size ping pong table.

There is plenty to see around the area and the beaches are lovely, but for peace and quiet, just sit by the pool watch the buttlerflies and housemartins whilst looking at the view or take a stroll around Cisternino late at night after a wonderful dinner at Il Taverna del Torre, picking up a handmade iceceam on the way in Glaciale Era. Check out some of the trendy bars in Cisternino or just visit a traditional cafe for an espresso and cornetto (cream filled crossiant).

Please note bedroom 5 on the roof has not got a bathroom next to it.

The pool man comes twice weekly.

The pool is fenced and locked and the whole garden (garden and one field) is also fenced.

The flowers are beautiful around the pool and we have pomegranate trees and oleander bushes along the fence on one side, creating a lovely colour wall.

We have two outdoor showers (hot and cold water) so that you can wash before and after a swim and there is plenty of space to dry clothes.

You will find wood and kindling for the pizza forno and details of how to make the dough and cook the pizzas at the house.

We have plenty of pool toys and childrens' toys.

There is a lovely little terrace at the back of the house on the first floor which overlooks the garden and miles of the Valle D'Itria which adults can use to drink a glass of wine as the sun goes down.

We have a large hammock to sit in and read.

Each bedroom has side tables, reading lights, chest of drawers and hanging space. Every room has a fan, and a mosquito zapper should you need them.

All the doors and windows have integral mosquito nets so you can have fresh air without the mozzies.

Because the trulli is made entirely from local stone, the buildings are considerably cooler than the temperature outside.

The sitting room has an alcove with a leather sofa and tv/dvd. The dining room table is made from rosewood with a glass top so you dont need to worry about marking it. We leave lots of games, books and useful items of stationery etc in there for your use.

You can also turn the light on in the cisterna (well) which lies below this room and look down into it. There is a padlocked metal grille over the entrance so you don't need to worry about anyone falling in!

About Sharon Bierer

A family from London and Denmark who love their home in Italy. We have local friends now to whom we speak dreadful Italian but we speak it enthusiastically! We love the local food and wine and always try to buy from local shops. Please enjoy our home.

Sharon Bierer purchased this villa in 2004

Why Sharon Bierer chose Ostuni

We bought it as a wreck and it has taken years to restore. It has been a school, a home and housed animals in its past. It is surrounded by countryside, is quiet, has beautiful views and wonderful neighbours who have lived in this contrada for centuries.

The house is 200 years old and has such character. It is so close to Cisternino and shops but still very 'unknown'.

What makes this villa unique

Character, beautiful trees and country life going on around one. Sitting on the roof drinking a glass of wine watching the sun go down over the valley. Reading a book on the hammock or lazing in the pool. Neighbours, not an agent, who live next door and who are available immediately for any issues. Eating on our 16' (4 metre table) stone table, watching the butterflies.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Mrs Bierer,

Many thanks to your “hostess” Imma (?), who has been very helpful in letting us use her baby chair for our grandson. It took some driving up and down to Brindisi.

Anyway I should warn eventual coming quests with babies, that AVIS, Brindisi, does not see the difference between a baby chair and a children’s chair, although at booking there is a baby chair alternative in the form.

On the whole we all are very satisfied with our week in your Trulli. One extra plus is its location on a hill which gives cool air.

At last I will have to report a theft: In the commotion around the baby chair a forgot to refill your Limoncello stock, which entitles you to deduct the price of 1 bottle (€25, I believe) from the refund amount.

Mille grazie ed arrivederci!

Amazing characterful and fully equiped Trullo-villa

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a wonderful stay at this trulli. It's situation is perfect - in the heart of the Valle D'Itria with all the important towns in easy driving distance. Cisternino - the closest - is lovely.

The villa is set in quiet countryside surrounded by other Trulli, both developed and in original state. Good views of the surrounding towns and countryside - we caught the fireworks from a local festival. The villa itself is spacious. 5 double bedrooms, 3 good shower-rooms a lounge/dining area and a very well equiped kitchen - we had fun trying to think of equipment/tools not provided- we failed! Outside pizza oven /bbq was used alot with the stock of well dried olive wood provided. The bedrooms are within the Original Trulli and so have high vaulted ceilings that are tastefully lit and hugely atmospheric.

The outside area is as good as the interior. Big deep pool (2.4m at the deep end), in superb condition and really easy to keep clean although it was cleaned during our stay. Best pool we have had on holiday. Loads of outside seating - loungers, hammock and 10 chairs at the outside stone table which is under a lovely pergola with grape vines covering it. Beautifully illuminated at night too. Outside table tennis was fun. We didnt use the mountain bikes because of the heat, but they looked to be good quality and suitable for larger children and adults (helmets included). We were there in early August, whilst in season you would have walnuts, figs and olives at your fingertips. We were there during a heatwave - temps of 40C in the shade but despite no aircon, the thick walls were effective in keeping the inside comfortable and fans are provided. You can open all the windows as they are sealed with mosquito nets. Water is from the original well/cistern and filtered. Fine to drink but the bottled water is cheap. We were impressed by the local facilities - local wine merchant (UPAL) had great wine and we struggled to pay more than 6 Euros per bottle.

We flew to Bari and our sat nav (a must have) delivered us to Fantese in 1 hour 20 minutes.

We very much wish to holiday here again.

Owner's Response: What a lovely review, thank you. Yes, this family was in Italy during the heatwave which covered most of southern europe but luckily trulli were built with this in mind 200 years ago! We would be delighted to see them again and Imma and Paolo were very appreciative of the kind remarks you made about them to me.

Marvellous! and lived up to all our expectations.

  • 5 of 5

It met all our expectations. It suited us all - from 3 years to 70. Sharon and Imma thank you very, very much; you made sure we had all the beds and cots we needed. You gave us initial provisions as a courtesy. Just as well! we arrived on Sunday night. BA had left us stranded at Heathrow on Saturday. We eventually arrived on different flights via Prague, Munich, and Naples from Luton! It was soon forgotten though when we arrived at Contrada Fatness. There were toys galore. It was really well equipped. The huge stone table under the slatted pergola is genius. The swimming pool couldn't have been better - ozone- treated, I think, rather than chlorine. Lots of towels and loungers and umbrellas. We were quite a boisterous party and I hope we didn't disturb any one in the vicinity. We didn't really need to go anywhere but we did of course. We loved the Stella Lido where it is safe and secluded but it must get crowded in July and August.

Paolini also enjoyed the holiday.

Pizza oven was brill as was table tennis ...

They all say it but we shall be back!

Owner's Response: This lovely extended family had the journey from hell thanks to British Airways, but despite that they were jovial throughout - more than I would have been bearing in mind their journey! They could not have been nicer and easier guests. Wish they would come back - anytime.

family trip to fantastic Villa Fantese

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late saturday evening and were welcomed by the most friendly italian neighbours, who made sure we were well accommodated. The house was nice and warm, there was fresh fruit, biscuits, water and wine, ready for a quick goodnight snack.

The next morning it was a beautiful sunny morning. It was easy to find our way in the well equipped kitchen and establish a breakfast on the terrace under the porch. What a view!! A wonderful garden, a neat pool and the blue sky above. Time for an easy day by the pool.

In the house there is a very personal guidebook to the local area: Cesternino, Martina Franca, the bicycle path on the viaducts, the local inns etc. Also wonderful, very local advice about the cats and dogs that come by the house, if kids or adults are fond of pets. Very cute and friendly animals, by the way.

The house is very well suited for five adults staying for a whole week. The living/dining room works perfectly as the gathering point, when the weather keeps you inside in the evening. With three bathrooms the logistics getting out of the house works well. It is a very well functioning house.

The architecture is a great experience. Beautiful lime stone walls, very tasteful combination of modern functionality and old building tradition. Trullo life is something different in the nicest way!

Ostuni is a beatiful town. So is Tarranto. Very nice walking streets and harbour area. Take a closer look and you will find out about italian corruption and neglect.

We recommend visiting the ecological olive production Antica Masseria Brancati, with trees more than 3000 years old and a roman basement with production facilities.

Rent this house and you will be gifted with a wonderful stay in the nicest house situated in a great area with a lot to experience.

Contrada Fantese is an old masseria (old farm), consisting of only three properties/homes. Our neighbours are locals who farm the land and mend the surrounding trulli. It lies in the middle of the valley d'Itria, surrounded by fields and there are superb views of Locorontondo and Cisternino from the garden. The area is close to all the famous towns of the area, Martina Franca, Alberobello, Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica (renown for its restaurants). The sea is about 25 minutes drive away with beautiful sandy beaches. The area is full of wild flowers, olive, fig, walnut and almond trees and local vineyards.

Cycle on the famous Italian cycling routes (2 minutes from the villa), visit the Bhole Baba buddhist centre for yoga and meditation, run through the countryside, visit the vineyards, cheese shops.

Our neighbours are the managers so they are on hand all day and night for anything you might need.

We provide a safe pool area for children with locked fences around the pools. We have cots, linen, toys, bottles, plug covers, books, potty, stroller, wendy house, pool toys, trike, in fact almost everything parents need to make life easy with small children. We can provide campbeds for older children who want to share with their parents. If you need anything bought for you in advance of your trip like nappies or formula, just let us know. You will be presented with a large welcome basket which includes wine, milk, tea, bread, coffee, biscuits, fruit and much more.

Puglia has wonderful, child friendly towns with the best food in Italy. Ostuni, Locorotondo, Lecce, Otranto and so, so many more. Meander leisurely before dinner with all the locals, chatting, stopping for an aperitive, seeing local architecture which has been influenced by Swabians, Arabs, Normans, Spanish.....

The ice cream you will buy in gelaterias is invariably made in house by local people with ingredients that they have grown!

You can visit the markets in each of the towns to buy your fruit and veg.

This is Italy as it used to be 30 years ago but the North has changed, Puglia much less so. The people are charming and helpful.

Local wines can be bought in cooperativos for as little as 2 euros a bottle. For just a little more you will enjoy really excellent primitivo, negroamaro and malvaisia wines. Wines in restaurants are rarely marked up like they are in the UK, a joy!

Your children can run about in the fenced gardens/fields whilst you sit by the pool and read a book, watching the swallows swoop down for a drink from the pool and the butterflies landing on the lavendar bushes. Life should be so tough!
