HISTORY: Montecosaro, charming town in the province of Macerata, stands on a pleasant hill a few kilometers from the Adriatic sea, and its territory is delimited to Morrovalle, from Civitanova Marche, Asola from the stream and the river Chienti. From various excavations practiced in different places of its territory have emerged Etruscan monuments, objects and Roman buildings, as the villa and the Roman temple dedicated to Janus at the stream Pontigliano (Pons Iani); as the Romans are the names of his sources: Stack, Iulia, Arceia and Putrid while you observe the remains of a pre-Roman settlement and Roman, the same source Iulia, and the sarcophagus dating from the third century guarded near the present town hall. Surprising is the position of the country. Given the altitude with respect to the proximity of the sea, still it preserves the structure of the castle with its doors and much of the city walls, close to the foot of its castle or fortress, which is laying on top of the hill called Cossaro. S. Maria a Pie 'di Chienti (facade) The name of this place takes its name the entire country of which you do not know the origin, it is assumed that the German, perhaps Lombard, and probably dating from the period of the Duchy of Spoleto. All this when the settlements were already avvenurti hills, after distruzionie looting carried out by the Goths, of all cities and houses that populated the valleys of Chienti and Potenza whose Latin populations have survived, they could create more positions suitable to the defense ; so true of Civitanova Marche and SANT'ELPIDIO A MARE after the destruction of Cluana or Novana, of MONTESANTO (Potenza Picena) after that of POTENTIA, of RECANATI after that of HELVIA RECINA, of MONT'OLMO after that of Pausola.
