This lovingly restored ancient holiday home is situated at the edge of the hamlet of Ponticello which is one of the oldest medieval villages of Lunigiana, a comparatively undiscovered and unspoiled area of Tuscany, surrounded by wooded hills and magnificent mountain views. Not far from the Cinque Terre and the sea, the house is divided into four apartments, with independent entrance, tastefully furnished with old country furniture and terracotta floors. Outside, the terraces and the garden offer outdoor dining furniture and a BBQ - perfect for al fresco dining. The large garden features a private swimming pool with saltwater purification system and solar heated outdoor shower. Close to all the local amenities for shopping, eating out and sight seeing it is also a perfect place to rest and relax.
Lunigiana: Unknown to the crowds yet close to Florence Pisa Lucca and the Cinque Terre is the northern corner of Tuscany, an unspoiled area of breathtaking natural beauty set between the Apennine mountains and the Mediterranean sea. In this sunlit land of chestnut covered hills crowned by medieval villages you will enjoy the very best of Italy - wonderful landscapes, good food and a warm Italian welcome. The region is scattered with medieval villages perched high above green wooded valleys, ancient castles built by the Malaspina family (it's also named the hundred castles valley) breathtaking views across fertile river valleys and dramatic mountain vistas: Tuscany's best kept secret. Hidden away from the tourist trail the Lunigiana nevertheless enjoys easy access to the main cultural centres of Northern Italy and the sophisticated coastal villages of the Ligurian coast.
The 'Cinque Terre': The Lunigiana can be considered the most uncontaminated area of Tuscany: hills woods rivers and cascades. This magical unspoilt area offers the tourist a mild climate, a calm and soothing atmosphere. The area caters for all offering museums thermal waters sport centres fishing and trekking on horse back or by foot. Added to all of this is the folklore traditions and cuisine (there are a number of restaurants in the surrounding area offering traditional local cooking at reasonable prices). There is something for everyone and last but not least wonderful friendly people who will give you a warm welcome. Join them in celebrating their many festas throughout the summer. Close to Lunigiana is the Bay of Poets and the Cinque Terre, the beautiful stretch of coastline with its rocky coves and sandy beaches which is famous for the 5 fishing villages that cling to the cliffs along the spectacular Ligurian coastline.
The surrounding area: The cultural centres of Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Parma and Genoa are also all within an easy drive: Florence is 1.5 hrs drive. Lucca (Puccini's birthplace) 1hr drive, is a delightful city: hire a bike and pedal around the city walls. Parma (rich with Verdi connections) or Pisa (with its famous tower) are both 1hr away. Close by are the picturesque ports of Lerici and Porto Venere ( a UNESCO heritage town) and the famous Cinque Terre. Nearby are the ancient cities of Sarzana, the beaches at Forte di Marmi, the 'Carrara' marble mountains and the Garfargnana national park .The sandy beaches at Marinella and Marina di Massa Are 30 min away. Many freshwater rock pools, made by the fast flowing water from melting snow are at walking distance. We really enjoyed our 2 week stay at this property. The grounds are kept very tidy and the rooms were clean upon arrival. I had heard bad stories about spiders and what not from others that had stayed at historic properties in Tuscany, but I'm happy to report that was not an issue for us. The lounge chairs around the pool were fantastic. The location is wonderful. I would recommend this place to any of my friends.
Thank you very much!
We absolutely loved this rental. It is even nicer than the pictures look. There is a fabulous little medieval town 200 meters away, which the Francigena trail passes right through (highly recommend exploring both of these!) The locals are great. There is little book of recommendations for you that includes fabulous restaurants in the nearby villages. We loved each one we tried. They treat you like family in these restaurants. Loved everything about this area and this little house. Clean, friendly and everything you need (including a strong shower with plenty of hot water!) It is a wonderful break from the heavy tourist areas, with authentic Italian charm.
Beautiful property, stunning, peaceful location
Lovely stone property - which keeps surprisingly cool in the heat, in a stunning location and well kept grounds. Pool was a big plus for our boys (Age 11, 9 and 6) - good size, very clean. Rooms were clean and well maintained. Kitchen is well equipped (maybe a few more wine glasses if there are more adults staying than we had) with a good sized table to sit 6. There are also two outside tables for eating if desired.
Location is rural, which we loved and a phrase book is essential if you don't speak Italian. The locals however were very friendly and patient with our attempts - which improved over our week stay. There is a great local restaurant in walking distance, open at lunch times and several local shops within a few minutes drive. A car is a must. From your location you have, walks from your door, a choice of historic hill top towns, mountains and the coast for easy day trips.
In my opinion, not a negative, more a bit of advice - don't rely on the WiFi - definitely through no fault of the owner or housekeeper, who fixed it half way through our holiday.
Would absolutely, definitely recommend - although if honest, would actually like to keep this undiscovered part of Tuscany a secret!
Thanks a lot for your review, I appreciated your comments and suggestions very much. I'm really sorry for the WiFi. It's the first year that we have the internet, and our provider turned out not to be very reliable. We're working to improve it.
La Casa Torre has been fantastic
Our holiday here at La Casa Torre has been fantastic. It's a really nice accommodation with garden and pool. The view of the mountain is amazing and we loved the quietness here. The little fresh water stream nearby is cool and a bit cold, but it as nice to be cooled.
We went to Cinque Terre by train from Pontremoli to Monterosso by train. The ticket is valid for up to six hours to travel between the Cinque Terre’s five villages.
Lucca is a nice old town, great shops. Genova has a cozy harbor; you can take whale-watching trips from the harbor as well.
We took a catamaran trip (Silent bay sailing charter) from Sestri Levante’ harbor. We can recommend the trip, quiet, swimming, and beautiful view from the sea. Sestri Levante is a fantastic city with the best ice cream (look up “ice cream angel” on Tripadvisor).
The Lunigiana area is really beautiful; we have seen the authentic nature and the cities. Bagnone, which has a nice bridge and castle, Aula and Fivizzano.
Pontremoli has a cozy little market and the gelateria is open late: until 23pm (if you really are in the need of an ice cream)
We had a fabulous meal at the Agriturismo Ristorante Podere Conti; to get there take the road up the mountain for approx. 5 km from a good bakery called Ricco’
It was nice to have the housekeeper around every day taking care of the garden, pool, stairs and having a big smile, she was very nice and gave us excellent advice for our trips
Thank you for a super stay!
Thank you for arranging such a fantastic weather for us. We have had the most relaxing Easter break ever!
The medieval hamlet of Ponticello in Tuscany is all made of stone and cars are not allowed in its narrow streets. It is a perfect place not only for those who enjoy cultural daily trips to most known art cities like Pisa, Lucca Florence Genoa or Parma, but also for guests who like discovering nearby, less famous but nonetheless, very interesting and charming villages like Sarzana, Pontremoli, Filattiera, Filetto, Bagnone, Malgrate, and Castagnetoli. In 30 minutes you can reach the sea area, and in less than an hour the Natural Park of “Le Cinque Terre” close to La Spezia and visit the enchanting villages of Lerici, Portovenere, Monterosso, Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Tellaro, and swim and sunbathe on this unique coast. There are also very nice restaurants where you can enjoy the tasty food and superb vine of the surroundings.
