Woolford Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Your hosts invite you to enjoy a visit to the land that James Michener wrote about in his book 'Chesapeake.' And remember to keep this visit a secret '...lest you awaken the rest of the world as to what a sequestered paradise this place is on the Eastern Shore.' (James Michener)

You will be staying in a charming, waterfront, 1-bedroom, carriage house located on a five-acre estate with surrounding tall pines and stately cedars. Your living quarters on the second floor, with private entrance and balcony, will overlook the pool and English garden below. Queen-size bed with down comforter and memory foam mattress, terry robes, overstuffed seating, comfortable antique furniture, and rich oak floors all add to a romantic and homelike ambiance. If you become chilled, just flip on the gas fireplace. Enjoy peace and quiet, observe wildlife, watch the sunrise from the beach, and sip a glass of wine on the dock or by the flagpole just before sunset.

With flat, traffic free roads and spectacular Chesapeake scenery, the area around Deerpond is noted for cyclists of all ages and abilities at any time of the year. Ride the same scenic roads where top triathletes compete in the summer months. You are likely to see many waterfront views with bald eagles, osprey and Canada geese (in the winter) soaring over your head as you ride or walk. Our property backs on Fishing Creek with miles of pristine shoreline - great for rowing or kayaking. If you have a trailer able boat, there is a free public launch ramp a couple miles away that you can use to launch it and bring it over to our dock. Have a bigger boat? Sail it in from the Bay which is just a few miles away -- there is deep water all the way. Don't have a boat? Got that covered too, we provide a tandem kayak and rowboat on the property for your use. Visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge just a few miles away and observe many different birds of prey in their natural habitat. Oh - And don’t forget to bring a camera because every bend in the road can yield that nature picture of a lifetime. Drive into Cambridge to take in the many antique stores, play a round of golf at the Hyatt Resort and Country Club, or eat dinner at any of the fine restaurants in the area. Better yet, sample some of the famous Maryland crab cakes and bay oysters at one of the local restaurants near Deerpond.

If you want to come by boat, we have a deep water mooring for guests (7-9 ft) and can provide deep water dock access (5-6 ft depth) by special arrangement. This is very rare for the Eastern Shore.

Relaxation for you can take the form of just reading a book by the fire or listening to the sounds of nature. Many guests have commented on the extreme quiet that they experience staying at Deerpond. In many ways that alone is worth the price of admission. If sightseeing is your preference, view our list of day trips to take by car. Want to remain local then access the web link <<http://visitdorchester.org/see-and-do/upcoming-events/>> to get some ideas. Here are some guest book comments from the many folks that have stayed at Deerpond over the years:

“The best mini-vacation ever “--“This place is amazing”--“just like an Inn without any other guests”--“with thanks for your warm hospitality'--“a piece of heaven'--“Deerpond was all & more than we expected”--“wonderfully peaceful and relaxing”--“what a wonderful place for a romantic getaway”--“lovely, serene holiday”--“one week was not nearly enough time”--“the cottage was perfect”--“the views are spectacular”--“a perfect, quiet setting to work on our project”--“loved the kayak, pool and day trips”--”We don’t know how Deerpond could be any better” …

There are a hundred more of these in our guestbook; so, we invite you to come, read them yourself and experience Deerpond!

About Bob

Unlike many other properties where you are given a set of keys and a phone number to call, your hosts live on the property in the separate manor house, friendly and available to answer all your questions and give their recommendations for restaurants, things to see and possible places to go during your pleasurable stay at Deerpond.

Bob purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Bob chose Maryland

The waterfront setting with acres of land and a $million backyard.

What makes this cottage unique

The waterfront setting changes by the minute as birds come and go, squirrels and rabbits play on the lawns, deer graze on the grasses (and sometimes the plants –which is not a good thing) and boats pass in the distance. It’s like living in a game reserve by the water. Then there is the peaceful quiet at night with almost none of the man-made sounds. You sleep like you never slept before.

Beautiful and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Bob and Cathy were more than gracious with their home and property. We enjoyed using the pool and kayak and Cathy even brought over some baked goodies as a gift. Lovely, private room. We enjoyed going for a walk/run in the mornings and seeing the many bunnies and other wildlife that inhabit the area. Room was very clean and everything was as expected. Wonderful hosts.

Awesome location and accommodations.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Deerpond. We came out for the Ironman 70.3 Eagleman event in Cambridge MD and also to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. When we arrived Cathy and Bob met us and showed us the accommodations. They offered us space in their garage to put my bicycle together and to store it during our stay. We opted to keep the bike in our rented van instead of the garage because it was easier. We needed to drop it off in Cambridge the next morning. The neighborhood is very secluded so we felt comfortable leaving it in the van overnight. The paved road going past Deerpond was perfect for a test ride to verify I put my bike together correctly. There is very little traffic in the area. This rural part of Maryland is an excellent place for riding bikes. It is close to the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge National Park which is where part of the Ironman bike course was. The accommodations were perfect for us. There was plenty of room in the carriage house and the bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. There are restaurants in the area if you don’t want to cook. We enjoyed exploring the property. There are numerous locations to sit and observe the beautifully landscaped yard and watch wildlife. Our favorite spot was setting down by the water. Cathy and Bob made us feel very welcome and gave me a “Good Luck” helium filled balloon before the race. They emailed me photos that they took during the swim part of the ironman. Cathy even baked us a celebration carrot cake. We highly recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxing vacation spot. We look forward to staying there again for the full ironman event in the future.

Owner's Response: We really like to have cyclists stay at Deerpond. The surrounding area is just great for cycling and we are just 2 hrs from Washington DC. Why punish yourselves with traffic and steep hills when you can just cruise on our flat and lightly travelled roads. Oh, we almost forgot. The water views along the roads can be pretty spectacular too.

Peaceful, comfortable stay on the water

  • 5 of 5

The carriage house apartment sits above the garage of this property which is separate from the main house. It is clean and comfortable and has a view of the water. The property has a pool that is shared with the owner. The owners are very nice and Cathy makes delicious special treats! Our favorite local eats were Stoked and the High Spot in Cambridge. For local flavor try Palm Beach Willie's on Taylor's Island. Good food on a floating dock and trivia on Thursday nights! There are lots of biking trails nearby and the property is within driving distance of St. Michaels.

Very nice, relaxing get-away

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at Deerpond. The estate is beautiful, and the carriage house was very nicely done, with everything needed and more for a relaxing visit. We loved the little extras that were provided, as well as the gas stove which was very comforting during our unusually cool late-May days. Bob and Cathy were very gracious, providing recommendations for exploring the area. We spent a particularly nice day driving to the Atlantic shore, visiting Chincoteague and seeing the wild ponies. A highly recommend place to get away from it all.

Wonderful weekend get-away!

  • 5 of 5

Deerpond is such a beautiful setting, with the pool, gardens and overlooking the water in the distance. We enjoyed the quiet, cozy cottage with all the comforts of home and well-equipped kitchen. It was great to be warmed by the fireplace on a chilly spring weekend. Our hosts, Bob and Cathy, were very helpful and hospitable, and we loved the special treats, Irish scones and warm brownies! And we had the pleasure of meeting their new family member, "Buddy." We explored the area and had a great visit to the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge where we saw several bald eagles. Overall, a wonderful, restful and relaxing weekend get-away. We highly recommend and hope to return soon!
