Mountain views from front and back in restored charm
We go back and forth between Charlotte NC and Windy Ridge frequently. We use VRBO for most of our own vacations, and now that our sons are in college we enjoy sharing our historic mountain getaway with others. Our children, relatives and friends consider it a sort of 'homestead' in all of our lives. The picture above is of one of our favorite things to do - have friends up and enjoy a long dinner under the oak trees beside the house.
Mike purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Mike chose Galax
Growing up our family took many Saturday drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping for picnics, hikes and playing in creeks. Later, we couldn't believe our eyes when this Virginia farmhouse was available when we started looking for a mountain place. Its been rewarding to fix up and enjoy the relaxing charm of mountain views and culture.
What makes this Cabin unique
The charm of Windy Ridge is its historicity, gingerbread gables, 3 chimneys, two porches and gentle mountain views. On the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Very cool historical house as expected… We enjoyed the cows across the street
Very quiet and beautiful views.
Peaceful weekend escape
We came to Windy Ridge for a reunion weekend and are very pleased with our stay. The great room is amazing with windows all along 2 sides allowing for a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We could hear the birds singing all day long. We also enjoyed both porches and sitting under the oak trees watching the cattle in the evening. I would highly recommend Windy Ridge to those who need a break from their phones! Thank you for sharing your home!
We are so glad you were able to tap into the peacefulness of Windy Ridge. Only one night there feels to us like a week's worth of soul refresh. We hope you come back soon!
A memory making experience for my family and I thanks to the age, history and beauty of this home and property! Bunk Beds, family games, sporting equipment and the natural wonder of the parkway all around us!!! A wonderful home to enjoy togetherness and nature!
Beautiful, peaceful and the perfect location.
The house is well kept, spacious and inviting. The owner, Mike, was great. We arrived to open windows and fresh air coasting through the home. The family room was our hangout in the evenings and the pictures do not do it justice. We worked the Hillsville market for 4 days and were so greatful for the short commute and tranquillity at the end of our days. Five stars all the way.
Special Ministry/ Special Blessing
If you are looking for the simpler things in life this is the place for you. This place was truly a blessing for my family. We would love to go back. Leave the modern technology at home and you will be reminded why life is so precious. The owner of the house was extremely helpful with useful information about the house and great suggestions about the surrounding sites. We can not thank the Moses Family enough.
Your family was a joy to host - thank you for recognizing and enjoying the nature of Windy Ridge as a gift-of-a-place. We'd love to have you back!
This was my first time using VRBO. This was a perfect choice. The house was lovely and the location was quiet and peaceful. Thank you again for everything!
THINGS TO ENJOY IN THE AREA:
*Blue Ridge Music Center: On parkway. Mile marker 212. Windy Ridge is between mile marker 208-209. Very close. Saturday nights at 7pm are great times. There is also a great hiking trail at the center.
*Cumberland Knob: One of the best hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway is 15 minutes south of Windy Ridge. Cumberland Knob has a 2.5 mile gorge hike that goes WAY down, criss crosses a roaring stream (lots of spots for kids and adults to wade, swim, picnic), then hikes WAY back up. There’s also a gentle ¾ mile hike from parking simply to the knob.
*Galax-directions: Get on parkway behind house heading north toward Music Center. Pass Music Center and go to the first exit. You will see sign to Galax (right). Take this road and it becomes the main street into old Galax.
*REX Theatre: Most Friday nights they have live Mountain/Bluegrass music. Free but they ask for small donations. Very much worth the experience.
*Chestnut School of Arts
*Smokehouse Bar-B-Que. Won national awards *McAdoo’s Restaurant
*George’s Coffee-great sandwiches *Bogey’s- serve dinner only
*Walmart/Groceries (stay on main road till dead ends then turn right and go another 3-5 miles)
*Wineries: Chateau Morrisette and Appalachian Villa. Very close to each other. 30 mile drive into Virginia from Windy Ridge. Mabry Mill: on way to wineries. Follow the NC winery trail in the Yadkin River Valley, centered upon the grandest winery east of California – Shelton Vineyards (25 minutes away – feels like Napa Valley).
*Lakeview Restaurant-GREAT country breakfast. Take Parkway heading south and take exit onto Hwy 52. Turn left at bottom of exit. 15 minute drive from here.
PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO FROM WINDY RIDGE:
*Mayberry/Mt. Airy: If you are a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, you can drive 25 minutes to Mt. Airy NC where Andy grew up. The adorable old downtown has preserved the Snappy Lunch Counter where Andy ate a 5cent porch chop sandwich everyday all the way through school (EAT THERE), and has many shops, restaurants, and Mayberry experiences (tour the town in a Mayberry replica sheriff’s car, etc.)
*Tubing/Canoeing the New River: many outfitters will set you up for a long or short canoe or inner tube trip down portions of the New River, within a 20-30 minute drive.
*Biking: The NEW RIVER TRAIL is a bike trail formed from repurposed train tracks through the mountains, thus the grade is gradual at every point. The southern entry point is in downtown Galax VA, where there are also bike rentals. Another fun entry/exit/rental point is the river town of Fries, VA (if renting bikes, that’s where we usually begin). VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL is a 50 minute drive away, ending in Abingdon, VA.
*Amateur Caving: THIS IS OUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH KIDS! DEVILS DEN CAVE and park is 15 minutes north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Google directions. It’s a sparsely maintained park. Bring flashlights, clothes for getting dirty, and rope if you have it. Park the car, hike ½ mile down, and you will find a hole in the mountain. Free climb into any of the 4 or 5 openings within sight. Stay in pairs! We do not know of anyone who has yet defined the depths of these caves, and you are on your own (watch out for poison ivy on the trail down and up).
Peaceful Heart Alpacas Farm: Five minutes north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. “Along one of America’s most scenic roads, you will find Peaceful Heart Alpacas. Our 27 acre, alpaca farm is located at Mile Post 204 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just a few miles from the Virginia/North Carolina border. We feel blessed every day to wake up to pastures full of beautiful animals and a fiber arts studio and store located in our 100 year old farm house. Our alpaca farm and store is always open to visitors, free of charge.”
*Mountain Golf: There are several golf courses within 5-20 minutes, varying according to price and quality. If you walk, you’d better be in shape!
