This is a charming Chalet-style home with 200-foot shore frontage on Bass Harbor, with views of the Harbor and outlying islands. The Chalet sits on a private, wooded lot (screening you from neighbors), with a large 12' x 24' deck overlooking the Harbor.
Relax on the deck and watch lobster boats, sail boats, canoes, kayakers, and the Swans Island Ferry within the Harbor, or enjoy the view from the fully-appointed living room, dining area, or the ocean-view bedroom. Kids will love to feed the ducks that visit the shore, and you'll enjoy the sunsets from our shore as well. They are spectacular! The 'Chalet' also has spacious off-road parking.
The property is adjacent to Acadia National Park, which offers beautiful scenery and these recreational opportunities: mountains, ocean views, fresh water lakes, and hiking trails. Also available are naturalist cruises and hikes, whale watching, kayaking, biking on carriage roads, and fresh seafood!

Our property is on a 0.3 mile dead-end, paved road, so it doesn't see a lot of traffic. Parking is off road in our spacious driveway. Our property is lined with greenery (mostly white spruce) so there's a good measure of privacy as well. Several renters have commented that it serves as a 'quiet oasis' after a hectic day of sight-seeing. Perhaps that helps explain the fact that we have MANY repeat guests. Some have returned for five, six, and seven years. One couple has been with us for ten years as of 2012!
My husband, son and I had a wonderful time at the Elvin's Chalet. You really do not need to bring anything with you except beach towels and that is TRUE! We spent many of our hours out on the back deck basking in the beautiful view of the harbor. We spent our week crawling all over Mt. Desert island. This was our first time staying on the quiet side, and I have found that Southwest Harbor is one of my new favorites. The chalet is an easy drive to anywhere on the island, and just a 5 minute drive (if that) to the Bass Harbor lighthouse. One early evening, we were able to see 2 little fawns coming up the property! What a nice added touch! The bedrooms are very accommodating, and the bed in the master bedroom was SOOO comfy. My husband and I are still missing the comfy bed, and wonderful breezes that come through the house from the harbor. This rental is a must. The owners are wonderful, and little touches in the house were so thoughtful all over. My 19 year old son was happy there was Wi-Fi, and I was in love with the kitchen and huge dinner table. You will not be disappointed by this chalet. We cannot wait to come back again. Missing Maine already.
My husband, daughter and future son-in-law had a fantastic 1st trip to MDI and staying at the chalet made it a perfect vacation. We spent a week and enjoyed all the different activities in the area and the park loop road. In the morning we enjoyed sitting on the deck drinking coffee and planning our day. At night we relaxed after our busy day with a cocktail, cards and lounging around. Comfy couch and two easy chairs worked out great. Nice open area with large table for eating and nice kitchen with all the appliances that you would want or need. Loved the bedrooms upstairs, especially ours which looked out at the water! Very private, clean and comfortable! With lots of windows to make it nice and bright! Can't wait to go back.
We spent a week at the Chalet in Bass Harbor Maine July 2014. The Chalet exceeded our expectations in every category! We love the "Quiet Side" of Mount Desert Island and the Chalet offered the privacy we love yet has quick access to restaurants (primarily Thurstons!) and the busier areas of the island. We loved everything about it - the location right on the Harbor, the wonderful deck, lovely bedrooms upstairs, comfortable living room and den and nice kitchen. The photos and description were all right on. The Chalet was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for a great week and a perfect vacation. It felt like home from the moment we arrived! The Owners were easy to communicate with and very nice. The only downside was we didn't get to meet them in person! We love Maine, love MDI and LOVED the Chalet. We will be back.
This chalet was just the type of place we love - secluded, water view, accessible to day hikes, gorgeous. We were able to explore the whole island during the day, be away from the crowds of Bar Harbor, all from a comfortable, serene home base. We ended the week with a memorable lobster dinner at Thurston's. We loved it so much we are returning next summer.
Great place to stay on our first family trip to Maine! We loved the view and peaceful setting of the chalet; even the 'resident' bald eagle landed in the backyard! The location was perfect--convenient to hiking & biking in Acadia National Park, shopping in Bar Harbor & dining in quaint Southwest Harbor. The owners could not have been more accommodating...and have the perfect place for a family getaway.
We loved the Bass Harbor oceanfront Chalet with all the comforts of home, restful view of the harbor and easy access to driving in the Mt Desert Island, Acadia NP, hiking, exploring shores, trails, harbors, and carrriage roads. Bass Harbor Lighthouse, fresh lobster nearby and close hikes for amazing views made this a perfect home to stay in for our trip. We loved being able to cook lobster in the well stocked kitchen and eat it at the DR table overlooking the harbor. We thought this vrbo was perfect and recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy the park and the rest of Mt Desert Island.
