* Neighborhood information:
The Eixample Montjuïc was the sector which began to materialize the project of Cerdà, ie Barcelona extension beyond the walls torn down in the mid-nineteenth century. It extends between Balmes streets for many years constituted a barrier, by the passage of the train open Sarria-and Paseo de Sant Joan, one of the mountain-sea routes of the proposed basic Cerdà.
The first group of houses was built in the current intersection of the Consell de Cent and Roger de Llúria. The initially Eixample Montjuïc hosted some major industrial plants, factory and Elizalde, one of the first in Spain to make cars and engines.
Gradually, however, became the neighborhood where the residence was located preferably bourgeois, with the outbreak artistic modernism represented by such prominent buildings such as La Pedrera, Casa Batllo and Casa Ametller, among many others.
Along with the home, often displacing economic activity was localized tertiary increasingly louder, commercial, office, corporate offices, cinemas, theaters, etc., especially in the more central area (between Llúria and Balmes) and around the powerful Paseo de Gracia, still the old road that connected the walled city with the town of Gràcia. This axis is still today the center of economic dynamism and commercial center projection.
It is important to note that the Plaza Catalunya was not foreseen in the Cerdà Plan. This "forgetfulness" was corrected by the force of events: his position as a hinge between the old town and the new Eixample's was naturally in the heart of the city, and over the years has done nothing but strengthen it.*
