About the property

Relax & Rejuvenate in our comfy, brand new jungle retreat. This truly is an 'Escape from the Ordinary!'

This area is lush and green and has the best weather on the island. The prevailing trade winds blow from just the right direction to keep the temperature pleasant all year round. Tropical, lush and green with fresh clean air (literally the cleanest air on earth!) and a multitude of fabulous things to see and do.

This lovely home is immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and designed for ultra comfortable off-grid living. Located in the Black Sands community, surrounded by jungle, the coqui frogs sing you to sleep at night and it's especially exciting when we get an intense rain shower at night, as the roof is metal, and the sounds are awesomely jungle!

You'll find a guest book at the house with details and directions to spectacular spots all within just a few miles from the house, including 'secret spots' that you will not find in any tourist book.

This is the perfect spot for adventure seekers and those who do not depend on TV for entertainment.

So very, very nice to get away from it all!

In this area called Puna, we are blessed to have so many great things to see and do. Here you will find pristine waters and the cleanest air on earth. Our home is just minutes to beaches such as Kehena, or enjoy a fabulous hike along the kings trail to the white sand beach called Shipmans. Swim in natural geo-thermically heated hot pools such as Ahalanui and the queens bath at Isaac Hale, world-class snorkeling at Kapoho Tide Pools and Champagne Ponds, surfing at Isaac Hale beach park, fishing at Mackenzie Park, spelunking, lava viewing, natural steam vents, fantastic markets and the quaint village of Pahoa with it's outdoor market, quaint shops, family-friendly and fine dining.

We are near Kalani with a vast array of activities including massage, yoga, 'static dance' and a fabulous vegan restaurant, or just wander the gorgeous acreage.

Every Sunday, just up hwy 130 you'll find the biggest, best and most diversified farmer's market in the entire Hawaiian Island chain - The Maku'u market, with everything you would expect and much more including live music and dancing.

Every Wednesday evening, just 2 miles away at Uncle Robert's you'll find a 'must do' - a fantastic night market complete with local artisans, fabulous local food vendors, Kava bar and live music and dancing - you may even be able to take in a hula show! Eat, drink & be merry! Sway to the rhythm of authentic Hawaiian slack key and ukulele and enjoy the sense of community here.

Excellent location for our purposes

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at this lovely cottage and probably won't be the last. The area is very quiet but still close enough to activities to make it fun. Had a great night at Uncle Robert's. The music was fantastic.

Can't wait until you get the solar installed so the generator won't need to be used just for lights.

OFF GRID

  • 5 of 5

This property is just what is described in the description. Cold Fridge / freezer - stove and oven work great - the bed comfortable - Oil lanterns worked well - Shower worked good with a little patience - no problem with the generator the one time we used it to wash clothes - washer and dryer worked well. As stated in the property description there are No lights without starting the generator which they ask you not to do except for once a week to wash a load of clothes, no internet or tv but that is all stated in the description. It's a little bummer to look out the front and the electric poles are right there across the street but........... The house was cool and again the bed was comfortable (1st of March) for sleeping.

My complaints were there was old food items in the drawers and spice racks (I mean really old / mildewed) and dog hair was plentiful especially in the back screened in sitting area socks were full every day. Bring matches to light the lanterns or fire up the stove and use a piece of paper. Also there is only one bed but there are blow up mattresses if you have a way to blow them up. Non of these were enough to complain to the manager of the property but it would be better if they were addressed.

Overall a nice place for a single or a couple wanting to get away from it all .... literally.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and high rating, We're glad you enjoyed your stay! Just a few things: 1. It is perfectly fine to run the generator as often as you like. 2. Those are not electric poles across the street, they are telephone poles, and we do have a land line with unlimited long distance. 3. I apologize about the "old" spices - there is so much moisture in the air that spices and such absorb moisture very quickly and seem old whether they are or not. If you come across anything like that please feel free to toss out. 4. I will speak to the housekeeper. 5. We generally do supply matches. 6. There are both electric and battery-powered air compressors for the blow-up mattress on the back lanai. Thanks again for your feedback, we wish you would have let us know at the time so we could rectify your areas of concern. Mahalo and we hope to have you back for your next vacation!

Peaceful vacation getaway.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned home from a lovely getaway in this quaint, charming house in the jungle. The cottage is homey and well set up for travellers. I can't think of a thing we needed. There are two generators if you want power (ie lights on in the evening,) or if you want to do laundry (which we had no need) . You could easily never use the generators at all and not miss it. Hot water on demand worked good, the stove and fridge worked very well. There is a manager in the neighbourhood who showed my husband how to work everything on our first day there and was a quick phone call away when we had other minor questions. We made good use of the charcoal grill. The front porch is where we spent the majority of our time. Loved the front porch. So absolutely peaceful having coffee out there in the morning watching the sun come up....or having a glass of wine in the evenings listening to the frogs and playing cards. Pahoa is a vibrant little town. So many great places to eat and shops to poke around in. Issac Hale Park (Poihiki) is a short drive away and is a great place to swim and picnic. This area is so scenic and lush. A must see. Lava tours are extremely popular right now and just stunning to witness.I highly recommend this rental. I think everyone who visits Hawaii should see it from this perspective as well. Thank you Sara and Dusk. We had a great visit !

Nice off the grid cabin!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed staying in this little jungle cabin. The frogs sing you to sleep every night, and the complete darkness make for a great sleep. Note that if more than two are staying here, the second bed is an air mattress. The generator worked great for the evenings and it was good to be without cell service so played cards and talked with our teens in the evenings. Very close to a great Wednesday night market, with great food and live bands. There is a binder with all kinds of attractions that are closer by. We did go to the west side of the island, about a two hour drive, to escape the rain sometimes (we understand that Dec. is the rainiest month).

Beautiful Jungle Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful cottage fulfilled our needs perfectly. We were there to work on a lot we own in the neighborhood, but also to have some fun and relaxation. We especially enjoyed the warm pond at Ahalanui Park. Going to Uncle Robert's for the Wednesday night market and music was fun. And the Farmer's Markets are not to be missed.

The house was well equipped. It should be described as a studio as the Queen bed is in the main room with the dining table and the kitchen. The enclosed lanai in the back is like a living room. Shortly after we left Sara (the owner) called me and we discussed some suggestions that I had and I was glad to hear that she had replaced the water pump. I would like to suggest more solar lights outside. When you arrive after dark it is hard to see to put in the code on the door. Also guests would be wise to bring a flashlight.

And Sara, I'm sorry that we broke the globe on one of the oil lamps.

Not great!

  • 1 of 5

The cottage is decorated cute, but we only stayed for 1 night, after booking for 6 nights. We arrived after dark and when we got to the cottage we found that the code to enter did not work. There is no cell reception in the area, so we drove a couple of miles back toward town to call the owner. We left a message & when Sara didn't return our call we call the back up phone number to a neighbor. He gave us the correct code. There is a no generator policy in the neighborhood after 10pm, so we looked for candles. We did find 2 small oil lamps, but the only matches that were in the cottage we so damp they would not light. We did spend the night that first night. In the morning we showered & we could not regulate the shower temp. It went from really hot to freezing cold then back to very hot, then back to cold. FYI: the water from the faucets is not safe to drink. It needs to be run the a counter top purifier or you need to bring in you own drinking water. There was no hand soap, body wash or shampoo in the bathroom. To top it of the bed was not confortable. We have done off the grid accommodations in the past, but we would not return here

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you did not receive the updated code prior to your arrival. It is not true that there is a no-generator policy at all. The generator is the quietest Honda made and can be run any time you like. There is an abundance of candles and lighters in the armoire in the living room. Thank you for letting me know about the shower – I immediately had a new pump installed and it has made a huge difference regulating the water temperature. I don’t know why you said there are not any amenities such as soap, shampoo, etc., because there are so many choices I can’t even count them all! You must have not opened the cupboard. The bed is a new, very comfortable memory foam queen size mattress. Water directly out of the faucet is not fit to drink even in NYC or LA. The Berkey filter on the kitchen counter purifies water beautifully, and often guests prefer to drink bottled water. I do wish you would have communicated. We asked you to let us know if there was anything you needed, and we had no idea that you only stayed for one night!

Relax in the sunshine during the day and enjoy nature at it's best. At night, listen to the jungle sounds of intense rain and the evening chorus of the local Coqui frogs ~ the first time you hear it, you'll think it's birds singing! Lovely.
