Denice Karamardian purchased this house in 1992
The history of this property can be read on our website. It tells about the neighborhood and my own connection to it through ancestors. It called to me when i saw it and i bought the house before even making a decision to here again, from an emotional pull. The innkeeper's story reveals the details.
Two things drew me to this house: first and foremost the view that is second to none in this entire city. No pictures can do it justice, so i have learned not to try and photograph it. Secondly, the arched wall to the dining room gave me a vision of a group of italian men playing cards in that very room, an imaginary scene which eventually proved to be true, and i used that arched theme to complete the design of the kitchen.
Our family originally arrived in Ithaca in 1816, but the family has scattered all over the U.S. For the 200th celebration of family still being in the Ithaca area, and wanting to celebrate the family patriarch's 90th birthday we wanted a place that all could stay under the same roof. We started every morning and finished every evening in the sun room, where family shared stories and lots of laughter, and ate food prepared by various family members, especially Carol (thank you Carol!). Every night we'd sit on the deck above the front porch and watch the colors of the sky as the sun set and Ithaca down below light up. One night we watched fireworks from the Yacht Club up the lake. During the days we went on various adventures including a walk and picnic lunch at Buttermilk Falls, going to Cornell University and researching family in the Rare Books & Manuscript library section as well as at the History Center, had ice cream at the Cornell Dairy, and of course at Purity Ice Cream, walked the Cascadilla gorge, ate dinner at Joe's Restaurant the first night and near the end of our stay ate at Taughannock Farms Inn overlooking Cayuga Lake and then met a tour boat at the park for an evening ride to see the old family cottage, one of the first ones built on the lake. There were many activities undertaken, and all were made much more special having a central place to house the 16 or so family members that included 4 generations of family! We had the Cayuga Chimes singing group for the birthday celebration and were able to arrange extra parking for the additional visitors at the Elk's Club next door. It was a wonderful, and truly magical experience made even more special having the whole house to ourselves. We fully enjoyed the atmosphere of an older home with many nice amenities and beautiful bedrooms overlooking Cayuga Lake.
We were in town for our son's wedding and wanted to rent a large house for are relatives to gather. We rented the house for a week and could not have been happier with our choice. We loved the proximity to town and to Ithaca College campus which we walked around every morning. The beds were very comfortable and the house very clean. We loved sitting on the porches looking at the lake views and and really enjoyed playing cards and eating in the sunroom.
This was the perfect vacation place for our family reunion. What a beautiful house, nicely decorated, huge and the view was much nicer than the pictures suggested! It has a nice back yard and lots of spaces for gathering and hanging out. The beds were comfortable, very nice rooms. The kitchen was nicely equipped and the florida dining area was amazing! One of the very special things that we also really appreciated is that the house is just a minute or two from downtown Ithaca (just a short roll down the hill) and Ithaca is a great place that offers so much. Excellent restaurants and cafes, live music, museums, amazing farmers markets, theater (we saw a great play while we were in town), cinemas, a science center and more. There are also some of the most amazing gorges and waterfalls within just minutes of the house...WOW! We would highly recommend staying here to anyone!
Close to three state parks and many waterfalls within minutes, two wine trails- many wineries, gorge trails a few yards away, downtown Ithaca Commons, Cornell campus within one mile, Ithaca college campus is literally our back yard, on the property line.
