Accessed over its own little wooden bridge, Tenda is a one-bedroom apartment which has its own kitchenette, a brand-new and tastefully furnished bathroom and a large balcony. Its crowning glory, however, is its floor-to-ceiling opening glass wall at the front which gives unbelievable views to the sea - even while lying in bed!! To sit on Tenda's balcony enjoying a meal with a glass of Madeiran wine is an experience to be savoured. You will love it!
Located on a calm and quiet area of Calheta, the sun and the ample views over the ocean will bring you all the good energies to spend a great holiday time in Madeira.
We are close to the ocean (5 min) and close to the mountains (15 minutes from Paul da Serra), a good start for days of discovery.
Each cottage has its private area and barbecue, but they also share the gardens and the swimming pool.
Relax by the swimming pool, enjoy the agricultural land with fruit trees, vegetable gardens and aromatic herbs. Our family is always available for help.
Live this Madeira experience with us!
You will be warmly welcomed!
We are Family Gouveia. It is very good to remember how this experience started: as a family project, it still is!! ;)
I am Sofia, daughter of the owners of the property, am currently working in Calhau Grande, to ensure that you enjoy the best rural experience we can share! As my mom and dad live in one of the cottages of the property, you will have the opportunity to meet them as well!
Sofia Gouveia purchased this bungalow in 1995
In 1995, we were living in Funchal and we were looking for a calm place to spend our weekends and holidays. On a sunny day, we were visiting the area and we found Calhau Grande, a beautiful wild place with big rocks and terraces. The name “Calhau Grande” – big rock - originates from the great rocks of basaltic origin – calhaus - which you find here, some 5 meters high.
The main house belonged to a poor family that lived by the agricultural lands and the fruits.
We immediately fell in love with it: there was enough space for garden, a good stone house with 2 bedrooms and close to it one Palheiro - a smaller house, which was used as shelter for animals during the night. We could also find ruins of other houses around! It was what we were looking for and the view and the quiet helped a lot! The decision was taken and Calhau Grande was ours!!
We started restoring our house. Every weekend we came from Funchal, working all together for our rural holiday house. The house was restored by us, in accordance with the models of the region, with local rock, very carefully in order to protect the surrounding ecology and the integration in the landscape. It got finished on April, 1998! We will never forget our first night here!
In 2004, the idea of renting the house Palheiro was born and our first guests stayed with us a week in March. It was such a good experience, it was like having our family with us, they were so friendly and they share the same ideas of us: to recycle materials, bringing life to old things. We could share our life stories, our experiences...
Recently, we are living in Calheta, our daughter Sofia is now working in Calhau Grande and our son Pedro is finishing his studies in Lisbon. In Calhau Grande, the other cottages are also restored with the same feeling and strength. The spirit hasn´t changed, we love Calhau Grande and we work for having it alive.
Calhau Grande is situated in the western part of Madeira Island, Calheta in the village of Arco da Calheta. Its name was chosen due to the configuration of the surrounding mountains and due to its proximity to Vila da Calheta, a beautiful place by the sea.
Leaving the airport, follow the expressway in the direction of Funchal - Ribeira Brava - Ponta do Sol - Arco da Calheta. There is a roundabout, follow the direction Ledo. Turn left onto "Rocha de Gouveia" Street. 1 km ahead on your right, there is a sign stating "Calhau Grande", which points the way to the car park of the cottages.
Calhau Grande is located on the west side of the Island of Madeira, in the town of Calheta, in the village of “Arco da Calheta”.
It has a 180º view over the Atlantic and is excellently located, close to the sea (7 minutes from Calheta Beach) and mountains (15 minutes from Rabaçal), where you can easily explore the maritime coast, the levadas, the mountains and the "Laurissilva" forests, through scenic passages by car, de motorbike, bicycle or even by foot.
It is about 45 km from the airport (45 minutes) and 30 km from Funchal (30 minutes).
