Peaceful riverside location, frequent sighting of otters, birdwatchers paradise
A long, narrow, gravelled lane leads to Jack’s cottage; it’s the reason the cottage has retained its peaceful, old world charm. Located on the banks of the River Blackwater, the 300 year old fisherman's cottage is secluded and romantic, perfect for a get away from it all holiday.
Recently renovated, the cottage will allow you to rediscover life’s simple pleasures. Spacious and welcoming with a wood burning stove in the dining room and electric heating throughout the rest of the rooms. The brass beds under the thatched roof make for restful sleep. There is a well-equipped kitchen and utility room and the bathroom has a roll top bath and wet room with under floor heating.
The well tended garden has access to the riverbank, where there is a hide to help spot the local otters.
Bed linen and towels are included in the price, as well as start up amounts of household items such as cleaning products and basics for the kitchen and fuel for the stove. (List available)
Pets welcome. Wifi available.
The Long Narrow Lane to Jack’s Cottage could be the reason why it is such an unspoilt and special place. It was originally created before the motor car, to take a cow to pasture, and as the people who lived in the cottage used boats to get around, it was only upgraded relatively recently to take a car.
However we find that depending on your driving experience the lane can be quite challenging, especially the first time you use it.
The lane is .75 of a mile long and gravelled; the first half is a typical farm lane, used by several different farmers who use the land around it. It can be a little rough and muddy depending on the weather. We do not own the lane, but we try to maintain it as best as possible given the other users.
The second half of the lane is used almost exclusively by our family or the clients in the cottage. The problem with this part of the lane is that it is narrow, 7 ft at its narrowest, with clay or stone walls at the sides, it’s not unlike sunken roads found in rural England: e.g. Somerset or the Lake District or Kerry in Ireland. There are two bends and a number of essential drains running across it.
As the lane is often the last hurdle after a long days travel to get to the cottage, some people can find it difficult, although once you have driven it the first time, we promise it gets easier.
Tip for driving the lane: if you concentrate on keeping the driver’s side as close to the wall as possible, the passenger side will clear the other side.

About Bridie Brittain
My husband, Ben and I found and restored Jack's Cottage. Ben is an artist with lots of experience in building restoration, even learning to thatch while renovating the cottage. My background is in administration but my passion is traveling. We have traveled a lot, all over the world, staying in all sorts of places, so when we found Jack's Cottage we knew we could create a unique and special place for other travelers to enjoy. We have been hosting people here for 20 years and would love to share it with you.
Bridie Brittain purchased this Cottage in 1996
Why Bridie Brittain chose Ballyphilip East
We discovered Jack's cottage when we took a trip on the Blackwater river with some friends on a sunny Sunday afternoon in August 1996. Our friends knew Jack when he was alive and wanted to show us his home, which had been in his family for 9 generations. We scrambled up the bank of the river and made our way through the overgrown path to the cottage. Although the cottage was in a dilapidated state, it was love at first sight.
What makes this Cottage unique
Staying at Jack's cottage is a wonderful experience, it is really off the beaten track, so it's very tranquil and peaceful, Assessed by a narrow farm lane, it may seem remote, but its only 20 minutes drive to the nearest towns of Dungarvan, Cappoquin or Youghal. Where you will find all the facilities you might need, such as top class restaurants, traditional music bars, banks, art galleries and lots of unique shopping opportunities. We are surrounded by fields and wonderful water meadows, where all sorts of wildlife and birds live peacefully beside us. There are otters in the river who visit our dock most days. Even after a couple of days most people are so relaxed when they leave, its almost as if they are floating on air. It really does have a magical quality.

Wonderful Cottage and Property!
This cottage was our favorite place to stay. We were here 4 nights.
The only reason I marked it 4 stars is because of the spiders. The spiders didn't bother us, unless they were in a spot too close for comfort (like right above my head on the headboard). I let most of them be, but had to remove a few. This is my only "complaint". The cottage was tidy and clean (except for the spiders).
My girls aged 9 and 10 were with us and absolutely loved meeting Silky (the cat). Bridie visited us our 2nd morning at the cottage. Thanks for stopping by!
The driveway is difficult and annoying if you have sensors on your vehicle. We left multiple times and never hit the hedges, but came pretty close. It was a stressful drive in and out every time...don't think it ever got "easier".
I am glad the cottage was your favourite, very sorry about the spiders, they seem to love the thatched roof, and you no sooner clean them up before they are back again!
Its a pity you found the access difficult, especially if you couldn't turn off your sensors, we do our best to inform clients that it can be a different driving experience before they complete their booking. Glad you didn't hit anything!
Silky was very lonely when you all left....
I don't believe there is a better place to stay in all of Ireland. What could be better ... a thatched cottage ... a beautiful garden ... a meander to the river ... clean and delightful inside ... fires in the evening ... and beautiful countryside to enjoy a walk!!! There is nothing NOT to love about this home!!!
Home from home
6th year in a row. Brilliant for the complete holiday. Ideal for quiet relaxation and also convenient for touring around restaurants and sites. Will be back again next year.
Thank you kindly, we are delighted you enjoy staying at Jack's cottage so much!
And we are looking forward to your next visit in 2018!
Sweet Jack's Cottage
We thoroughly enjoyed our October stay in Jack's Cottage. The lane to the cottage is as described and made for an adventure each time we drove it. For the faint of heart, this might not be your best bet. However, for those more confident, taking your time made for a sure success in traversing this narrow lane. Once at the cottage, it is just as described. Charming with all the conveniences of home. Thank you Bridie for the wonderful brown bread and jam and the fresh flowers from your gardens. Ben and Bridie, the owners, are so very nice and helpful! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. We took wonderful day trips, had a nice fire in the wood stove at night, slept like babies, and wished we would never have to leave this delightful part of the world! We even used the washer and dryer without difficulty. If you are looking for Irish charm in a good location, you have found it!
Many thanks for your kind review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay so much, you seem to have made the most of all the cottage has to offer.
Thank you too, for leaving the cottage just as you found it, we really appreciate that. It was a pleasure to meet you both and I hope you homeward journey went well. I hope you will consider spending some time here again on your next trip to Ireland.
Beautiful Cottage in a tranquil setting.
Bridie and Ben were warm and welcoming throughout our stay and gave excellent service by providing what we needed for a two week holiday.
Jack's Cottage and garden is beautifully presented, clean and well maintained.
We have already recommended friends and family to stay.
Peace, tranquility, and a sense of history
Wow! This is a wonderful cottage with an amazing history. Our only regret is that we couldn't have stayed longer. When you arrive at Jack's Cottage after driving down the narrow farm lane (which does get easier after the first time!), it's almost as if you're in a different time. Although the cottage has all the comforts of the modern world, its renovation has been accomplished in a way that gives you a sense of those who have lived there in the past. We loved reading about the cottage's previous owner, Riverman Jack and his family.
The current owners, Bridie and Ben, Kitty, and dogs Missy and Bean, are all wonderful hosts. The gardens at the cottage are gorgeous! Upon our arrival, Bridie gave us a tour of the cottage and explained the operation of the heating, hot water, appliances, etc. There was also a much-appreciated welcome pack of milk, butter, bread, etc.
From the moment we arrived, the cottage felt like home. It was very clean and quite comfortable for my husband and I and our young adult daughter. The bedding and towels are excellent quality, the kitchen is well-stocked, and the shower room is amazing with plenty of hot water.
Bridie recommends that you stop and get supplies before you arrive at the cottage. I wholeheartedly agree--once you arrive, you will not want to leave for at least the remainder of the day. Although our stay was only 3 nights, we would have loved to spend a week or longer. Hopefully, one day we will be fortunate enough to return for another visit.
Jack's Cottage earns my highest recommendation!
