Located in a quiet, gated community with easy accessibility to Kapoho Bay and the ocean. For your swimming and snorkeling pleasure, this two-bedroom cottage is situated on a crystal-clear, geo-thermally heated tidal lagoon. The water is a mix of heated, fresh spring water and sea water, and the temp is usually a wonderfully comfortable 90 degrees. The lagoon is privately owned, about 300' long and average 6' deep. Our Tilapia love this warm water. The bay across the road is sometimes called 'Champagne Pond'. It has many colorful fish and sometimes sea turtles.
Our cottage is surrounded by a flower garden.
There's a private-line phone, satellite TV and a VCR, a computer hookup available,a charcoal barbecue, and a spacious lanai overlooking the lagoon.
The Lagoon Cottage is a small house (about 750 sq. ft.),It has two bedrooms, one bath,a nice kitchen and a small-but-comfortable living room.
This is a strictly non-smoking vacation home!
A guide-map at the house will direct you to all the nearby places of interest.
My husband and I built our house on the lagoon in 1985. We later acquired the cottage to use as a guesthouse and vacation rental. We spend part of the year at Kapoho. We also live in Issaquah, Washington State, and at our Highland CattleRranch on Lopez Island, WA. Who said that 'retirement is for resting?'
This property has by far the finest privately owned warm lagoon. It belongs to three houses. Our own home is at one end, our rental cottage is in the center with steps into the water. The cottage at the other end is owned by a doctor and his wife who live in New York. They and their friends come from time to time.
Kapoho is the place where people who live in rainy Hilo have their weekend homes. The weather is great -- rain mostly at night to feed the flowers. Even a heavier rain is always warm. If you are caught in the rain walking, you are usually dry by the time you get back home. When it REALLY rains, we love to hear it drumming on the roof while we read our books or do needlework on the lanai.
My husband and I spent 3 nights at this cottage after spending time on the Kohala Coast. It was definitely a reprieve from the large resorts, and we haven't been so relaxed in a long time! The area is different from anything we have seen, with the warm thermal pools, lava beaches and lush greenery. The pool is amazing, spotlessly clean and very safe. We actually enjoyed the pool more than snorkeling in the famous champagne pools across the street. Easy access to the Volcano National Park, where we spent one day. The house is very clean, and includes all of the necessities for cooking (which we did all but one night, where we went into Pahoa for Thai food). Our favourite was sitting on the huge lanai with our coffee and books. Although TV is provided, we watched very little as the lanai was so much more appealing. Ilse was a great host, her communication was prompt and she greeted us upon our arrival. Instructions for check in were thorough and she also included information on the area, shopping, etc... We would recommend if you are looking for a quiet retreat in a very unique spot!
Kapoho is a unique area and the Kapoho Cottage is the best place to experience it. The cottage is located in the rural gated community of Kapoho Beach Lots. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly. Kapoho Cottage has by far, the best tidal pond in the commumity. It is the largest and most pristine of all the ponds I have seen. The setting is private and yet very open to the stars and birds.
From the deck of the cottage you have a great view of the lagoon and the tropical plants surrounding the property. The nights are quiet and loaded with stars. It seems the only rains occur cordially, at night. The days are beautiful and the location gives one access to so many things. The Champagne Ponds are just across the street for swimming or watching the turtles feeding. Access to Green Lake and the old Kapoho Crater is just outside the community (just call Smiley), and the awesome Wai'o'pae tidepools are a short walk away. The snorkeling there is the lovliest and calmest I have experienced in my life. Don't miss the Maku'u Farmers' Market, Kalapana, Volcano, Pahoa and try to spend some time in historic Hilo Town.
This IS Paradise with all the conveniences of home. We will be back soon! Thank you Ilse!!!
The lagoon is the only redeeming thing here! Cottage leaves a lot to be desired; in need of TLC. Very sporadic and unsecured Wi-Fi; no cell reception.
We are a local family from Hilo. I was looking for a special location to spend my son's first birthday in a beautiful and relaxing space that I thought he would enjoy as well as be a treat for my daughter and myself.
I am so happy that we found this rental. It was perfect. The pond is beautiful, big, and serene. The lanai was so spacious and provided a sweet and relaxing place to spend time as well as a roost to keep an eye on my children.
The house is well equipped with everything you would need to feel at home. The rooms are clean. The linens are clean. Everything was easy to find, use, and made for an easy and relaxing weekend stay-cation.
We loved it and felt very welcomed. I am so happy that we created such a special memory here. We will definitely be back again.
Our experience at the Kapoho cottage was spectacular. We went with our 2 boys (7 and 3) to celebrate our 7 year olds birthday.
Not only was the cottage cute and comfortable including everything we needed, but the property was beautiful, and the owners were very friendly and welcoming. The warm water made up for the chilly and lightly windy weather on our first day, and we stayed in the pond all day until dark. It was nice to have access to the private pond as it was clean and safe for our children. We brought bread with us and fed the fish everyday. I suggest tabis or water shoes especially for children as the algae can make the steps at the main entrance of the pond very slippery.
Our boys would complain every time we had them come out of the water to eat or to call it a day when it was getting dark. They kept saying how they wished they could live there and how it felt like home. We were so sad to leave and we cannot wait to go back for another visit!
What a great place to relax for our family! Life with kids is busy and hectic and this was a wonderful place to wind down, spend time doing things together and sharing adventure. A lovely, private and safe location. The lagoon pool was completely awe inspiring. To have water that our kids could get into any time of day, always really warm (like 90 degrees), only a few steps from the Lanai (porch) so we could watch and hear them. They could swim, snorkel and explore in the crystal clear water filled with fish, shrimp and cute little crabs. This is a natural spring feed lagoon so there is no chlorine or chemicals. Many of the houses in this private residential area have lagoon pools but a few locals told me this was one of the best. The lagoon was perfect to help them practice there swim and snorkel skills before we walked 1 minute across the street to one of the safest most comfortable snorkeling spots in all of Hawaii, Champagne Pond! The warm spring waters flow into this "pond" that is guarded from waves by a rock sea wall and mix with sea water such that all the sea animals are there and the water is incredibly warm. It is a magical place usually no deeper than 6' and often only 4', very warm and calm and filled with Moorish Idols, Butterfly Fish, Puffers, Goatfish, Sea Turtles, wrasses, gobies, mullet, boxfish and on and on. My daughter named the sea turtles and we visited them everyday. These are all animals that leave the pond to feed everyday but come back to rest in the warm water. When a high tide comes in many of the fishes are changed and there is a new group to experience. We drove up one night to see the glow of the Lava in the Volcano park and see the other flows but really walking/hiking on the lava flow of 1960 that is only 100 yards from the house was the most inspiring and interesting. You can easily drive all over the island but really for us it was all here. The kids watched probably 3 hours of tv over 2 weeks. We watched one move on the sat tv together as a family. Otherwise it was swimming, snorkeling, hiking, preparing meals and cleaning up together. On the way in and before we left we ate in Hilo at Ken's. I highly recommend it for a family.
