Discover Marseillan's Port Tabarka, only yards from many and varied restaurants.

Overlooking the little Port Tabarka itself, this is a cosy two-bedroom, two-storey cottage just yards from the waterfront. Open the living room shutters and step out onto your private ground-floor terrace and take in the view, before breakfast al fresco around the stone table. Pour a glass of chilled orange juice, a bowl of freshly filtered coffee and enjoy warm buttered croissants as you watch little chalut fishing boats bobbing in the secluded harbour. The little terrace at the front, with its table and chairs, has a sideways glance at the port and lagoon, from the fishermen's street rue des pecheurs

In the bright smart living room, flop and relax on a comfy sofa or step into the open-plan kitchen, with its ceramic hob and oven to prepare a supper of locally caught seafood or fresh bass and sole from the lagoon to savour as a bright harvest moon rises over the Mediterranean, before you climb the white wooden staircase to bed and the promise of even more spectacular skies in the morning.

Why Stephane Fichet chose Marseillan

Treat yourself to an escape to this little gem - a cosy cottage with its direct views across the quaint Port Tabarka, where 'les chaluts', the traditional fishing boats, are moored overnight before heading across the silver sunrise waters to the oysterbeds in the lagoon.

And the house is just around the corner from a dozen or so wonderful restaurants, 200 yards from a waterfront park for barbecuing fresh seafood, letting the children play, having a go at wakeboarding or justflopping on our little plagette.

Then again you could stay home under the pergola, sit on the terrace where a sunrise serenade from the family of ducks on the foreshore, comes as standard with your breakfast coffee, settle down indoors with a good book, sip wine from the winery 150 yards from the house or eat the oysters harvested by your neighbours in the port.

Just a couple of minutes walk along the waterside takes you to the main pleasure port of Marseillan, its quaysides lined with restaurants and cafes, barges and dinghies moored outside the wine coperative and Noilly Prat vermouth warehouses. By contrast, the Port Tabarka is a far more peaceful affair. Your grandstand front-row view of the Etang de Thau and the sparkling contours of the Mont St Clair across the lagoon boasts one of the most privileged positions in Marseillan Village.

amongst rows of classic wines at the Taverne du Port, or the well-heeled and fashionably dressed at the legendary Chez Philippe around the corner; Eat on the quayside with the boating fraternity at the Château du Port or under the brick vaulted ceiling of the gastronomic Table d'Emilie. As the sun sets over the rigging treat yourself to a crêpe or two chez Camille or simply sip away the hours at a cafe or brasserie table as the locals indulge in water jousting or the eccentric Marseillanais sport of Lou Capelet. Should you really want to earn an appetite or simply cool down, there is plenty to do out at sea, on the lagoon or along the canal: Boating and watersports within a few minutes walk of the house. Miles of long sandy beaches on the Med and the infinite leafy tree-lined Canal de Midi, with its timeless locks and solitary fishermen. Further afield, dip in clear mountain lakes and canoe white waters in the gorges of Haut Languedoc as eagles soar above.

Play Pétanque on the shady village square or book a tennis court along the Oystermen's road. Children can always let off steam in the Parc Tabarka playground two minutes walk away - skate ramps, volleyball and table tennis areas.

Shopping: Sunday morning's legendary Brocante fleamarkets at Marseillan Plage resort, 5 minutes drive from the village, hailed by BBC TV as the ultimate continental boot fairs. Find Gallé crystal, Limoges teacups and 1950s copies of Paris Match alongside antique bedspreads and wedding dresses.

Dozens of Domaines offer wine tastings (local Picpoul de Pinet white wine ideal with oysters). The village co-operative is on the other side of the port and the nearest private winery, La Madeleine St Jean, is just yards from your front door. Further afield, great St Chinian, Corbières and Faugères vintages are but a sip and drive away. Closer to home, Marseillan's world famous vermouth Noilly Prat, ever the heart of a true dry martini. Famers markets sell Fougasse breads, Pelardon cheeses and garrigue herbs.

Nightlife - amusement parks at beachside resorts across the water, late night bars selling mussels and frites, even the Casino buzz of Cap d'Agde. Fabulous festivals from November's celebrations of the Vin Primeur, with dancing and toasting in village squares to the Spring Olive Oil fêtes to midsummer music and fireworks in the village square.

"The appartment is locate...

"The appartment is located in a quite area of the village with a very nice view on the harbour. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance (5-10 min). The landlord sent us a very helpful information package with tips for visiting and dates of local festivities - an excellent service! Some kitchen equipment e.g. the electric kettle or the frying pans should be replaced/renewed as they are not in a good shape any more, but everything else was in satisfactory state and as described in the offer."
