Why Sue Johnson chose Maui

My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived there year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I have updated and kept decorated in the Hawaiian style.

What makes this house unique

Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.

It was a paradise

  • 5 of 5

When I walked into the house, the ocean view from the big windows took my breath. The posted pictures are beautiful but the real view from the property was even better! The mountains on the horizon change thier colors hour by hour. Finding huge sea turtles swimming to the private rocky beach, or seeing colorful tropical fish by snorkeling, we were thrilled like children. You don't need to drive or even walk blocks. Everything is in a few steps away from the house, which is surrounded by beautiful tropical plants and serenity, but close enough to a town, Kihei.

The kitchen was spacious and well equipped. The beds were all comfortable, as well.

The experience at this beautiful specious house was so healing, comforting, and peaceful-- that I felt like I were in a paradise and never wanted to leave.

spacious place with amazing scener... and turtles!

  • 5 of 5

You step out the backyard and there's the ocean. Sea turtles come to feed by the rocks, we probably saw at least four or five of them every day. You can see the sun set whenever the weather permits and that's quite the view as well. The neighborhood is real serene, house is spacious and comfortable, and of course the view is killer.

Gorgeous, peaceful oceanfront location in south Maui

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to the Hawaiian Islands; although I am certain that it will not be our last. I was looking for a relaxing waterfront home to rent while our daughter was married on Maui. Reviews indicated like this home would fit the bill and it absolutely did. The home is well sized and well stocked for 6 adults. The location is drop-dead gorgeous! There are two sand beaches just a short walk in either direction; or, with foot protection, you can walk across the lava rocks and go snorkeling in the backyard ocean. When we had a question or problem, the caretakers, Jim and Katrina, took care of our needs promptly. Staying here was a wonderful experience. I'm looking forward to a return visit.

Most beautiful spot on Maui

  • 5 of 5

This was our 8th trip to Maui with our two boys (now 17 and 20), my tenth, and my wife has been there many more times than that. We've stayed in Kihei, we've stayed in Kaanapali (once) and several times oceanfront in a Makena condo. This stay in Sue's beautiful home in this very special place was by far the best of them all. We arrived in the dark and woke up the first morning to the gentle sound of waves and a predawn view that may be unmatched in all Hawai'i -- without even getting out of bed! It just got better and better from there. It's not just that the home is oceanfront, it truly is on one of the prettiest pieces of coastline on the island. The "old Hawaii" look and feel of the home is just right -- casual, comfortable and well appointed. This is the first place we've ever stayed that we were as content to just hang out at home as to go touring or to the beach. Coffee in the lounge chairs at dawn, and sunsets in those same chairs, margaritas in hand, were the perfect way to start and finish a day. The outdoor dining room, under a tree and over the water, was the perfect place for a barbecued dinner while the stars came out. Sue was an absolute pleasure to deal with as was Katarina, her property manager and caretaker. We will be back.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much, Martin, for the lovely review. You have surely epitomized the feel of our home, and of our very special place. I do so enjoy sharing the wonderful heritage I have received here in Makena, and am happy when other folks feel the same comfort and spirit that I feel here. Mahalo, Sue

Heaven in Maui

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our 2nd trip to this wonderful house. One of our favorite things to do when we are there is sit in the lawn chairs in the morning, sipping coffee and watching the whales and turtles. The location of this house makes you feel like you are in your own little paradise. It's quiet and away from the crowded resorts. The best snorkeling we found was right in front of the house. Beautiful corals and fish and lots of turtles!

The layout of the house is perfect for couples, each bedroom has its own bathroom. We ate outside on the patio most nights, after cooking on the new gas grill. The new large capacity washer and dryer were great too.

I've never vacationed anywhere else on Maui where I have felt so peaceful and relaxed. Sue, you will be hearing from us again and again! We love this house!

a Heavenly place in Hawai'i

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from our 6th visit to Sue’s house in Makena in the past 7 years and I can truly say that means we Love this place ! What I stated in my review a few years ago certainly still holds true today - but the place is even better now. One of the bathrooms has been completely remodeled; the new, very large washer & dryer are wonderful; and some new furniture adds to the updated feel. The owners Sue & Clark are a pleasure to deal with and since they spend at least a couple of months each year in the house, they insure, along with their local care taker, that the place feels like home.

“The house is very comfortable and extremely well stocked. Three bedrooms and three baths means there is plenty of space for everyone. The grounds are gorgeous with lots of outdoor seating and easy access to the water. There is no better location on Maui than this little dead-end road and this house in Makena - providing that you want to be ocean front and Not surrounded by hundreds of people. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting here in the back yard during whale season and watching dozens of humpback whales in the ocean in front of you. I’m convinced that the best snorkeling spot on Maui is in the protected lagoon in front of the house - lots of fish and I have seen no less than 2 and up to 6 turtles resting on the bottom in 10 feet of water every time we get in. A short half mile stroll to the end of the road puts you at one of the best and largest beaches in Maui. We can’t wait until we are back in Makena.”
