Good but not Good

Salomeh was very nice in the beginning getting into the house etc. The one thing about this house that was not the best for us was that though it is located centrally to El Cerrito shopping areas it is on a very busy street for the neighborhood so traffic noise is almost constant, bus stop right in front, if you are looking for peace and quiet this is not the place, house is older and walls and windows are not substantial so noise and weather comes right through. During the stay she said garbage cans were not taken out on time and that there was too much garbage in the cans. apparently the cottage in the back yard is also rented and they use same cans but if you rent this house you are the one blamed for any garbage problems. You are forced to buy a rental insurance and now that we have vacated she is filing a claim saying we damaged trim on fireplace by using it, rental says it has a fireplace and we used it and maybe smoke tarnished it? Also toilet was a problem the whole time with lots of plunging and she claims it took a plumber 2 days to unclog (what plumber takes 2 days on a clog?) and that there were bottle caps and candy wrappers stuck in it, not done by us, we don't put that type of material in toilets but maybe a previous renter did. She says there is a missing comforter but there is not. A picture fell off the wall which obviously had the hanging wire put on by an amateur and she wondered why it was standing on the floor, told her it fell on it's own but she filed a claim on that too. Maybe she is used to using these claims on rentals? I have rented many places through these types of websites and none made us get rental insurance and none ever gave us a list of things we did wrong in the end, always good reviews of us, we left this place spotless and I have the pictures to prove it. Overall good value and location (other than the noise) but a bad taste in our mouths at the end.

Owner's Response: I rented to John Lompa who is local and lives with his wife Stacey in Richmond at the last minute because he said he was having marital problems and needed a place to live separately. He desperately was looking for a place for a few months while they worked it out. He said he would live there and maybe sometimes his teenage children would too. I regret the decision I made to rent to him. In the end it seemed that his wife Stacey was living there. John didn't communicate and didn't answer his email. I told him garbage pick up was every Thursday. They would forget and garbage would pile up. When they left, the toilet didn't work. Bottle caps, candywrapers and feminine napkins were extracted from the plumbing. The toilet had to be removed to unclog the pipes. I never had such an experience with a tenant before. There were also large blood stains on the couch and comforter. I shared pics of the plumbing mess and the blood stains with the deposit insurance company. The fireplace trim was soot covered and burned. Artwork was removed from the wall. It was strange. Finally I offer the option of $99 deposit insurance so no one has to leave a $2000 deposit. Big mistake. I have not recovered over $1000 of damages yet.

Lovely Kensington Home

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, quiet, spacious comfortable home centrally located within walking distance to shops in Kensington and Solano, Ave. Berkeley. Wonderful neighborhood with great Sunday farmer's market and prepared food stands a few minutes' walk away. Easy access to freeway.

loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

We came in august to help our son get situated at UC Berkeley. The house had everything we needed for a week long stay. The washer and dryer really came in handy. The kitchen is brand new and well equipped for cooking. The house has a bus in front if it with service directly to downtown Berkeley which made it easy for our son to go and explore. The BART station was a 10 min walk away. The host was really responsive to our questions and gave us great dining tips. The house looks exactly like the photos advertised. There are shops within walking distance. We loved the saturday farmers market. I am sure we will book this rental again when we come to see our son.

It is just what was advertised

  • 5 of 5

Cute house in a great location. I stayed here with four family members to celebrate my grandmothers birthday. We were able to have a few friends over and cook a meal in a well equipped kitchen. The house has a nice backyard and a patio that has nice garden furniture. We loved resting in the hammock. The house is comfortable and thoughtfully furnished. It's close to public transportation. It was just what we expected.

Perfect for a short or long stay

  • 5 of 5

The house is as advertised. It's a comfortable, meticulously clean and cozy house perfect for couple or families. The house is close to a cute set of shops. We were able to walk to Colusa circle famers market on saturday to stock up on yummy supplies. My kids loved the hammock in the backyard. I highly recommend this house. We didn't have a car but the bus to downtown Berkeley was outside and the BART was a 10 min walk. The host was very responsive and gave us tips and directions.
