Great home, very clean and neat

House had it all. Lakefront with beach for kids. Pool and tennis courts. Close to town and lots of helpful suggestions from the owner. Highly recommend it.

Too lived in and personal

First let me start by saying, Joe the owner is a very nice man. He was very helpful in telling us where things were and suggestions for eating out and places to see. I almost feel bad leaving this review but as a regular vacation home renter there are things we have grown to expect throughout the years and would have preferred to know before renting this home. That being said I felt like I was staying at my aunt and uncle's house rather than on a vacation getaway. As the previous reviewer had stated, there was way too much familiarity that was not comfortable for us. Some might find it charming but I found it bothersome to see too many family pictures around the house, on the nightstand, on the fridge etc. There were also half used essentials in the bathrooms, hairbands and such in the cabinets, personal items in the nightstands, many things that made us feel like we were staying at our relatives and didn't quite have the place to ourselves. A note to "water the flowers" and a text while we were at lunch that "I didn't mention this but our place is for sale and our realtor would like to show the house today if possible", were two additional annoyances that made us feel like we weren't quite on vacation :( To his defense however, it does state in the lease that 24 hours notice is supposed to be given to show to potential renters and buyers, (which it wasn't but alas he understood when we declined because our valuables were out and we weren't there). We just completed our own home sale and frankly I was very done with showing a place to any potential buyers. It didn't ruin the week but it certainly but a damper on things and made for s good conversation piece at lunch since this had never happened before. Additionally, half drank seltzer in the fridge and frozen foods in the freezer added more familiarity that was just uncomfortable and not really a nice touch. Again I do feel badly leaving negative comments for someone who was very pleasant but it was just a turnoff as a vacation renter and I hope that part can be understood. lastly, there were no wash clothes so bring those

Great location, home needs some maintenance

  • 3 of 5

When we arrived the first impression was quite good although the top floor AC was not working ( this was communicated in a note left for us ). The room was very hot upstairs and we were told it was not going to be fixed and it would be ok. It turned out alright but it did not create a very good impression. The BBQ ignitor was not working so we had to light it with a lighter which is never as safe as the BBQ ignition. Overall the property itself felt very much as if we were living in someones house not staying in a holiday rental. Food in the fridge when we arrived, family photos everywhere. The chairs on the deck were very old and I actually went through one of them and I only weigh eighty kilos The method of booking and paying for the property is outdated having to use paypal and therefore both parties paying charges to paypal which can be avoided if you set up a proper credit card paying facility through Homeaway like the other property we stayed in in New York a few weeks before. We loved the area, the pool and tennis court and the view from the deck outside. If the property was upgraded and you can pay without having to pay charges to Paypal for overseas transaction it would be 5 stars

Relaxing retreat

Beautifully spacious unit and the bonus is the deck with the views and sunrise on the lake. The owner gave us great tips about restaurants in the area. Nice quiet surroundings and close to Bolton Landing. Would very much like to stay again!
