Your private retreat is located on one acre with more than eighty varieties of tropical and ornamental trees and plants.
Wake up to birds singing at sunrise, sit on the lovely lanai, listen to music and gaze at the ocean while sipping your favorite morning beverage.
Hale Luana comfortably sleeps two adults with a queen size bed. There is also a twin bed which doubles as a sofa in the living room area. The separate bath house has a shower, bath linens, soap, shampoo, cream rinse and a First Aid kit. The kitchen is fully equipped (dishes, cookware, glasses, etc) and has a coffee maker, toaster, microwave, under counter refrigerator and gas range with oven. There is also a barbeque grill on the side lanai. We provide Ka'u or Kona coffee and sugar. The dining area has a table and 4 chairs. A TV and DVD is provided with many movies and some music CDs available to our guests as well as WIFI. We provide snorkel gear, beach chairs & mats, coolers, boogie boards and beach towels for our guests' use. Parking is free and we deliver your luggage to your door.
There are grocery stores, restaurants, a gift shop, post office and business services just a few blocks away. We also have horse shoe pits onsite.
We live onsite, about 50 yards above your private retreat. We are readily available to our guests to make recommendations, give directions to island attractions, tour the property or just 'talk story'.
Ocean View is a growing rural community known for its star filled nighttime skies. You won't find heavy traffic or bright city even a traffic light. It is conveniently located halfway between the wonders of the Kilauea Volcano and the tourist crowds of Kailua-Kona. There are many great adventures for day trip excursions including white, black & green sand beaches and the active Kilauea Volcano. Along your journeys you can stop at local farmers’ markets, visit coffee mills or a Buddhist temple and experience much of the old Hawaii flavor… or as we call it, the “real” Hawaii'.
Ron was born and raised in Oregon. Karen was raised in Michigan before moving to Oregon. We retired and moved to the Big Island in 2011. We finished building Hale Luana in June of 2014. It is a labor of love and we will always be adding landscaping and gardens for our guests' enjoyment. We love meeting our guests who have come from around the world and sharing the beauty of our island paradise.
Ron Gall and Karen Powell purchased this bungalow in 2011
We bought this property because the weather is perfect at this 2200 Ft elevation; the view of the Pacific Ocean & South Point; and the multitude of mature ornamental and fruit trees and plants.
The property is located in a small town yet within access to so many island attractions. Easy day trips include South Point, Kula Kai Caverns, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, Umauma Falls and City of Refuge as well as Kona and Hilo.
You can spend time at the beaches, Kilauea Volcano, botanical gardens, farmers' markets, or explore lava tube caverns. Ocean View has good eateries, grocery stores, business office, gift store and other amenities without the traffic and crowds of Kailua-Kona or Hilo.
Ron and Karen's bungalow was a great home base for our trip to the Big Island. We stayed for a week and enjoyed the hosts' kind hospitality, their friendly advice and their laid back aloha style.
When we arrived, Ron and Karen drove our luggage down to the rental from the parking space at the top of the property next to their home. It's a short walk down to the unit, but it was helpful they valeted the suitcases through the garden, a kindness they repeated on the day we left. On the way, Karen answered our questions about the fruit and flower trees on their lovingly cultivated property, and gave us ripe mangoes right from the tree!
The unit is well maintained, private, clean and decorated with friendly but minimal decor, letting the sights and sounds of nature really shine through here. We enjoyed watching a variety of songbirds eating from the bird feeder next to the lanai, (including a trio of pheasant chicks who made their first appearance the morning after we arrived!) and seeing all the exotic flowers in bloom.
We were on the Big Island to explore, and explore we did, so we didn't spend much time at the rental beyond evenings and mornings. We slept peacefully in the very comfortable bed, and made use of the kitchen and grill on the few nights we weren't driving back from some other piece of paradise. Karen and Ron let us cart around their snorkeling gear and wake boards all week, we borrowed an ice chest that we kept in our car, and they also had beach chairs and mats available. They make it super easy to enjoy the island by providing these things you'd otherwise have to rent or buy.
The peaceful solitude we enjoyed here is because Ocean View is a really quiet, rural area: not touristy, at all. It has two small grocery stores and a handful of fast food restaurants and gas stations. These suited our needs, but it's good to be aware. Its closest attractions are South Point and Black Sand Beach - both fascinating places for different reasons - everything else is about an hour drive away or more. The good thing about its location is that since it is halfway between Kona and Volcano, you can get to both areas in about the same amount of time. We spent a 14 hour day at Volcano (including doing the evening hike out to see lava falling into the Pacific! UNREAL! ) and only had an hour drive back to home. You can expect a much longer drive if you were staying at the resorts. Would recommend.
We spent an amazing 2 weeks at this little "ohana". It is such a cozy, inviting retreat....we didn't want to leave.
The cottage is well stocked, the coffee was delicious, the shower always hot, the nights were quiet, we slept like babies. It was very easy to feel at home here.
Ron and Karen are two of the loveliest people we have ever met on our travels and we will look forward to spending time with them again.
I am so grateful to the owners for allowing me to rent their lovely little cottage on such short notice. It allowed me unwind, de-stress, and face another day! I will never forget them and their hospitality.
We stayed in this cottage for two nights at the end of our 9-night circumnavigation around the Big Island. It's convenient for activities to the south(black sand beach, Kau Coffee Plantation) and activities toward Kailua-Kona. Unless you plan to cook there aren't many dining options close by in Ocean View. We got pizza our first night at Ocean View Pizzeria, only ate half and saved the rest for the 2nd night. Since we spent our full day to the north, we ate a hearty lunch at Annie's Burgers. Drive to airport in the morning(school buses and general morning traffic) took 1 hr 40 min.
The cottage is brand new and well appointed; the bathhouse is detached w/shower,sink,toilet. Cottage sits down hill from owner's house and parking is in front of their house. Ron will haul your luggage to/from car so
you'll just have a short walk through their lovely garden to the cottage. WIFI was very weak and nearly unusable but I think the owners are working on fixing this.
The hosts were always available and provided great service--carting luggage to cottage, emptying garbage, bringing clean linens, etc. My daughter and I felt very cared for in this lovely new ohana with a lanai overlooking the ocean. It was in a nice neighborhood and felt very private. Parking is up by the owner's home so a short walk down a driveway and a path is required. The exercise was good for us! The price was also very reasonable.
There are many opportunities for your island adventures. A "must see" is the Kilauea Volcano for day hikes, bike tours and seeing the awesome glow of the lava lake after dark. The Kula Kai caverns are just ten minutes away. South Point, Green Sands Beach, Punaluu Black Sand Beach and Ho'okena Beach Park are all within a 45 minute drive.
