Artist's Atelier is ideally situated in the charming Old Town of Villefranche: a less than 5 minute walk to the waterfront and beach, steps from the shops and restaurants, and a short distance to the world-renowned French language institute, Institut Français. Although entered on the ground floor, the structure was built into the hillside, and therefore the apartment is actually a floor above street level. This one bedroom/1 bathroom unit has a truly open floor plan, decorated in an artistic, eclectic, and comfortable style. When you enter, you will immediately notice the spaciousness of the room, and the historic feeling of the 600 year-old building with 12 foot high ceilings and old wooden beams. Bright sunlight fills the room from the French doors leading to the balcony. The view- from the sofa, dining table, main living space, and balcony- is of a beautiful old world scene: a cobblestone pedestrian street lined with colorful buildings cascading down the hill to the sea, the bay of Villefranche against the backdrop of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and the famous Villa Rothschild perched right on top (and beautifully lit at night). A charming and artistic view.
About the area: Villefranche-sur-Mer is a traditional Niçoise fishing village dating back to 1295 and anchored by two cosmopolitan cities on either side: Nice to the west and Monaco to the east. One could not speak about Villefranche without exclaiming its physical beauty. Surrounding its large, natural (and world famous) bay are cliffs and steep hillsides, brimming with olive and citrus trees, Mediterranean pines, and bougainvillea flowering plants. This lush vegetation meets the water’s edge, where the shades of blue are as dazzling as a sapphire necklace. The bay of Villefranche is surrounded by two of the most beautiful Caps in the Mediterranean: Cap Ferrat and Cap de Nice. These stunning limestone peninsulas- sprinkled with luxurious villas and lavish gardens- protect and embrace our bay. Amidst all of this is the charming village, hugging the coastline with colorful buildings. During a stroll through the maze-like streets of the Old Town, you will see beautiful balconies decorated with potted plants, fresh laundry flapping in the sea breeze, and hear the sounds of church bells and music wafting through the corridors. And of course, what description of Villefranche would be complete without mentioning the boating scene! Watching the comings and goings- from cruise ships to yachts to fishing boats- could be a full time occupation!
There is no shortage of things to do during your stay! And we are always happy to make recommendations. That said, part of the pleasure of being here is taking in the lifestyle of the village and the area: getting up and going for a walk or swim at the beach, shopping at the fresh markets (on Wednesdays and Saturdays), sitting on your balcony and admiring the beautiful scenery, exploring the village and all of its little quarters... Guests frequently come with a long list of all the things they will do, and then a couple of days into the trip, they decide to reduce the list and just enjoy the lifestyle.

A friend & I stayed is this well very appointed apartment situated in the heart of Ville Franche, one of the more authentic towns in the Cote d'Azur. I would highly recommend this apartment for two people - perfect for a couple and worked very well for two friends. It's decor is appealing, imaginatively done, while providing all the modern amenities. There are plenty of places to eat out in VF but if cooking-in is more your thing, the kitchen is very well equipped and I found shopping in the local shops a treat. The typical south of France beach is about 5 mins away (walking) making swimming & sun bathing very easy. (There are sun umbrellas, beach towels and even buckets and spades in the apartment so no need to bring your own!). We loved coming back to the apartment after a 'hard' days sunbathing or people watching/shopping in Cannes. It has a lovely feel and is a great place to relax and enjoy the view out over the bay of VF to the Cap of Ferat.
We have recently returned from a week at this elegant apartment in the medieval part of Villefranche. It has been beautifully refurbished to a high standard with a modern bathroom and an excellent kitchen. The photos online do not do the apartment or the view justice. There are lots of restaurants and shops within five minutes walk and the local buses are incredibly cheap, just 1.5 euros per journey. Shelley and Ricardo were very hospitable and helpful, as was their assistant, Valentina. Nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend this apartment. It is ideal for a couple. We are looking forward to coming back here in the near future.
My sister and I spent a week in September at the fabulous Artist's Atelier and it exceeded all of our expectations. The pictures don't do it justice - it is perfect and has everything you could possibly need. The apartment is immaculate, very well decorated and has amazing views.
Villefranche is a fantastic base to explore the French Rivieria but our favorite days were just exploring Villefranche and sitting on our balcony having a glass (or two) of Rose with fresh olives and bread from the markets. Shelley was the perfect host and made our week in Villefranche our favorite of our trip. Thanks so much Shelley!
Staying in the Artist’s Atelier was an experience second to none. It is exactly what we wanted, having the facilities to make our own food with the huge array of fresh produce available from the markets and the location to pop out to any type of restaurant on a whim. I’ve been trying to describe how much we enjoyed staying there to friends and family but I’m actually at a loss for words.
Villefranche sur Mer is just fantastic and when we come back for a holiday on the Cote d‘Azur in a few year’s time, we will come straight back to this little gem.
I have just returned from a week's stay at Artist's Atelier. I was expecting somethng a bit special as it's obvious from Shelley's site that she puts her heart and soul into her lovely properties. Yes, as expected the apartment was exquisite with every possible need carefully considered. However, photographs could never convey the enchanting atmosphere that met me on arrival and wrapped itself around me for the past week. Artist's Atlier is an idyllic haven in the very special setting of Villefranche. I am usually ready for home after a week away, but I would have stayed on a lot longer if only I could! Shelley is such a lovely, charming host, determined to make everything perfect for her guests - and she succeeds! Happy memories will have to suffice until I can return. Thanks again, Shelley, and see you soon!

What a wonderful experience my daughter and I had renting the Artist's Atelier in Villefrance this past November/December. The apartment surpassed our expectations, was clean and bright, and the location was fabulous for exploring the village and surrounding countryside on foot. The space is identical to the pictures, yet even quainter and more historical than I imagined. And the light and view are indeed perfect for the artist's sensibilities.
The meticulous and instructive brochures provided in the apartment took us on several memorable excursions. Whether walking along the beach just down the steps, dining at Cosmo's, taking the bus to Nice or Monaco, or climbing the hill to the Institute de Francais, the apartment is situated perfectly. The beds are comfy, the breeze through opened windows is fragrant from the herbs on the balcony, and we had plenty of hot water for showers. Furthermore, Shelley is the most pleasant and accomodating landlord I've ever met, and thought of everything to make her tenants comfortable. Her parting gift of a bottle of champagne was a great finishing touch to a great stay.
Couldn't have asked for better..... will definitely be back!

Artist's Atelier is located in the heart of the Old Town. Villefranche-sur-Mer is nestled between Nice and Monaco (10 minutes from Vieux Nice, 20-25 minutes from Monaco). Although surrounded by a diverse, exciting cosmopolitan environment, it is still an authentic Niçoise village. I know, I live here, and it's hard to believe it is still that way-- wonderful! Within close and easy access are Antibes, Cannes, St. Paul de Vence, Grasse, Mougins, and just a bit further, St. Tropez, Ramatuelle, Bormes les Mimosas, or Aix, Arles, Avignon and all the villages of Provence. Take a ferry from Nice Port to Corsica (3 hours on the fast ferry), or head to Italy and visit Ventimiglia, San Remo, the Vallee de Roya, Portofino, Cinque Terre... But if you stay in Villefranche and the neighboring towns of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, St. Jean Cap Ferrat, Eze, and La Turbie, you'll exhaust a week or more just exploring and enjoying these lovely villages. Most of these sites are easy to access without a car. And if you are here to attend the French language institute, Institut Français, it is a 10 minute walk away.
