I grew up in Otter Creek and have many wonderful memories here. I knew that this would be a wonderful place to raise our kids. I built this house from the ground up in 1997 and raised my two girls there until they were school age. I have since joined the military and am moving around the country but continue to cherish the memories that we had in this house. We hope that you make as many wonderful memories during your vacation and enjoy it's peaceful setting as much as we did.
Penelope purchased this House in 1997
Why Penelope chose Mount Desert
This property has been in my family's possession for several decades and was given to me to build my family home on. We cherish the privacy and tranquility that we experienced here each and every day. We have made many family hikes on local mountains using our home as a starting point and taking the free Park bus home. The village of Otter Creek is a great spot in the middle of all the amenities that Acadia National Park has to offer with a small playground down the street, a seasonal market, and phenomenal restaurant.
What makes this House unique
The kitchen and outside spaces make this house. The kitchen is spacious, with lots of counter space and hand-made cabinets to create your culinary specialties. The outside areas contain multiple granite rock-walled gardens with rock taken from the property left from the last glacier. The tiered gardens in the center of the driveway contain lots of beautiful perennial gardens and a winding pathway. We are working to restore the perennial gardens and outside of the house after years of being away but they will be stunning once done.

Great time away with friends
Our party of ten fit comfortably and happily in this wonderful home. Plenty of room for us all to spread out and also room for us all to get together at the end of the day. The kitchen and the bedrooms are well kept/stocked, the pool table was a hot ticket, and the outdoor firepit was the icing on the cake. Fantastic location too; minutes from Acadia and only a few miles from Bar Harbor. I would stay here again in an instant!
Great place to stay
April can be cold and damp but this was still a great place to be.
The house was cozy and comfortable. The fire place and large kitchen area was perfect for gathering. We watched a family movie every night and relaxed on the couch. Something we never do at home. (3 boys 18,17,13 and 1 girl 16). We enjoyed just hanging out.
Bat Harbor is close and provided interest and the boys used the ymca.
Acadia is spectacular and we hiked every day. Off season is beautiful and quite. It would have been great to hike right from the house but we weren’t prepared for longer day hikes. Next time.
The perfect family getaway to Acadia, very peaceful and secluded yet close to trails and Bar Harbor
Our family of four spent the first few days of April at this lovely home in Otter Creek. The snow covered woods around the house were so quiet and peaceful, you felt miles from civilization yet were close enough to the bustle of Bar Harbor and great trailheads. The kids enjoyed the game room in the basement, as well as the bunk beds upstairs. We loved having a well appointed kitchen for a great lobster dinner! It was still the off season (we missed it by a few weeks) so many restaurants and shops were closed, but we had a great time wandering around and hiking in the beauty of Acadia. It was a wonderful way to spend the first half of the week before heading down to NYC...I only wish we’d had more time. Thank you for a lovely stay, we can’t wait to come back.
Great spot to enjoy Acadia and Bar Harbor from!
A big house with everything you could need to enjoy Acadia and Bar Harbor! Cozy and private but only minutes from the park and the downtown area. The house has all sorts of fun games from board games, to karaoke, to pool table, darts, air hockey, etc. The stars at night are beautiful as well! Would definitely recommend!
fall get away!!!
My wife and I invited 4 friends along on our annual trip to Acadia. The trip was amazing thanks in large part to the fabulous house we got to come back to at the end of the day.
The house was absolutely perfect in every way, the only bad part was leaving Acadia and this wonderful house at the end of the trip.
The perfect place to stay!
What an amazing location for people who love to hike, have fun and eat great food! Penelope's place borders Acadia National Park so it was so nice to be able to walk out the front door to begin a couple of our day hikes. On one of our days we left the cottage at 4:15am and walked to the trailhead of Cadillac Mountain in our quest to hike to the summit to enjoy a sunrise by 6:30am. We got there in time and it was stunning! There is plenty of space for couples or families and it is well equipped. We highly recommend this location. Thank you Penelope.
This house is located in the village of Otter Creek. Access to a free bus system for Acadia National Park is a short walk down the street which will take you to all corners of the island. You can walk from the house 15 minutes through the woods to Otter Creek Cove and connect to multiple hiking trails nearby. We used to hike all day and then take the bus home from Bar Harbor, after ice cream, of course. No cars needed once you get to the house. An absolutely outstanding restaurant, The Burning Tree, is located right down the street as well as a small summer market. The Southridge Trail of Cadillac Mountain is located a short walk up the street. This is a moderate slope, 3 mile hike with gorgeous views to the top of Cadillac Mountain, known to be the first spot in the United States that the sun touches every morning. You can also drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain via the Park Loop Road where you can watch the sun set over phenomenal views. The shopping in Bar Harbor is great with multiple unique shops and restaurants. The hiking, carriage trails, whale watching, and boat tours are the real draw. The island is perfect for outdoor activities and enjoying nature. Our house will help you get in a zen mood with its peaceful, private setting. Wi-Fi is available in the house. Enjoy it as much as we have!
