Born in England and having travelled the world extensively, I am so priveledged to have discovered the wonderful life in Portugal. Living in Sintra and bringing up my two sons Anthony and Francis...Monte Branco became our weekend and summer home. Bought in 1985 the Monte was abandoned so first priority was to install a bathroom and running water in Casa Antiga... second priority was to build a swimming pool to refresh from the summer heat...and plant palm trees to creat a little oasis! Monte Branco then grew slowly each year, converting another building and becoming a fun meeting place for friends and birthdays. The last conversion was the old animal barn ...now the Celeiro a large communal room ideal for events, weddings, yoga workshops or just for guests to gather and relax. Monte Branco guests are made to feel at home and even when full (20 - 25 guests) there is always a quiet shady corner! It is wonderful to now be able to share this hideaway with others!
Jane Doody purchased this farmhouse in 1985
What a wonderful place to celebrate New Year with all my friends and family. Lots of cooking in the well equipped kitchens, big room with a huge fireplace and lots of firewood supplied. The children loved the distant fireworks at midnight see from the varandah....great place to party!

Jane is a wonderful hostess & couldn't do more to help make our holiday one of the best our whole very large family have taken together. Jane recommended some wonderful places to visit, some fabulous restaurants & went out of her way to ensure we had all we wanted at Monte Branco. Our children had such a fun time - the pool is sit rounded by a shady veranda to sit & relax or eat under which meant the adults could really relax & keep a watchful eye over the kids as well. The views from Monte Branco are truly outstanding & the skies are big & beautiful there. We wholeheartedly recommend Monte Branco to any family wanting good quality time together away from it all - peacefulness & in an outstanding part of Portugal. Very reasonable prices too!!
A truly amazing place! Set among rolling farmland and ancient olive trees. The property is lovely and very we'll maintained. Gorgeous pool and grounds and the house (casa Antiga in our case) was very well equipped and clean. The owner is fantastically helpful and a real mine of useful local information.
A really beautiful part of the country and still relatively unexplored, the real jewel of Portugal.
overall, a unique and tranquil place.
We had an excellent long WE in Monte-Branco from November 8th to 11th. 7 adults and two young children (2 years old) stayed in Casa Forno.
The weather (still summer like) really helped, but here are the highlights of our stay and the accommodation:
- stunning location in the quiet countryside with direct view to Monsaraz castle (which makes a really nice visit for a day), easy access (by car) for a day or more to the Unesco's world heritage city of Evora, near-by walks and sightseeing of ancient dolmens&menhirs.
- charming old farm house (still fully equipped) with fire place, outdoor swimming pool and wide relaxing terrace.
- excellent reception and service, with nice possibilities to have delicious catering/diner (e.g. when you arrive or for last evening).
In a nutshell, highly recommended between March and November (winter months may be a bit cold considering it is an old farm house).
other things to mention:
- you need a car to go there (a bit more than 2h from Lisbon airport) and enjoy the sights around. The owner gave us really good indications how to reach the place (even by night).
- This is an old farm house, clean, fully equipped and with a charming style and atmosphere. Still not for those looking for fully modern apartment/villa.
A limpeza e manutenção impecável. Como somos um grupo grande (20) ocupamos a totalidade da casa o que nos proporcionou total privacidade. Tivemos a agradável companhia da Jane (proprietária) que ainda conviveu alguns bons momentos connosco. Esperamos um dia voltar!
Description: The monte/farmhouse is situated on the edge of a little hamlet in the heart of typical Alentejano countryside, with its ancient olive trees, corn and sunflower fields. Peace and tranquility is only interrupted by the sound of birds and goat bells. The nearest village Motrinos is 1 km away, a short walk for local shopping, fresh bread, and fresh goats milk cheeses. The historical World Heritage town of Monsaraz set within its ancient fortified walls high on the hill, is about a 5 km drive; there are several excellent restaurants, craft shops and a castle dating back to the 11th century. S.Pedro Corval, the biggest pottery center in Portugal is a 10 minute drive. Nearby is the newly formed lake, Alqueva, the biggest in Europe, a natural reserve with fishing and boating. There are two ancient neolithic burial chambers dated back to 3,000 BC just a 10 minute walk away.
Visit the ancient olive trees - 1,000 to 3,000 years old
The well-known city of Evora is a 40 minute drive
Other Activities: archeology, birdwatching, pottery making, wine tasting.
