Overview

About the property

Family and pet friendly 4 bdrm house, stained glass windows and claw foot tubs.

A beautiful, lovingly restored 1912 house that we barged to Galiano Island from Victoria, BC. The house 1600 sq ft with 2 bathrooms and four bedrooms - 2 queen beds, 2 single beds, and one queen pullout sofa. The large main bedroom has a claw foot tub and opening skylight. The second main bedroom has its own walkout balcony where you can enjoy your coffee in the morning sun. A third bedroom has its own ensuite with another claw foot tub. The full kitchen is open concept with a bar seating area for 6 and a harvest table for 6, as well as a cozy wood burning fireplace. The living room has a large sectional couch, a gas fireplace, a piano and a door opening onto the large sunny deck, which has an outdoor gas fire pit and comfortable seating, a breakfast bar and barbecue. There is lovely hiking and biking out the back door and a short trail walk to the ocean sandstone beach. Plenty of wildlife including deer, eagles, hummingbirds, sealions, seals and river otters.

About Joanne Young

My husband and I live in North Vancouver but aways wanted a quaint farm house in the country as a retreat from city life. We have found that our busy lives and summers plans take us elsewhere and we decided that we wanted others to be able to enjoy our beautiful heritage home while we are away.

Joanne Young purchased this house in 2004

Why Joanne Young chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

This house has an interesting story. We moved the house by barge from Victoria to Galiano Island and landed it on a lot across the street from our property. In the photos, the other house on the barge is our only next door neighbour who also moved her house at the same time. It was early on a February morning when the barge arrived - what an adventure. As you can see, we have done a huge amount of work to lovingly restore this house, which dates back to 1912, to become a cottage retreat.

When you return from your outdoor adventures, enjoy this warm and cozy cottage with a glass of wine around the wood burning fireplace in the kitchen or the gas fireplace in the living room. Two clawfoot tubs and stained glass windows add to the relaxing atmosphere. In the morning, enjoy your cup of coffee in the sun on the front balconies in this lovely tranquil setting. A large sunny deck on the side is the perfect place for a summer barbecue and to watch the eagles that have a nest across the road and the spectacular stars at night. Children and pets always welcome.

Great Place for a Family Get -Together

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place for a group to get together and just hang out. There are many rooms plus a lovely sunny deck and another outdoor sitting area. It was ideal for our family Thanksgiving dinner. Although there is no sea view, the place offers peace, seclusion and a sense of tranquility and, if your group is the focus, as opposed to sight-seeing or just watching the tide go in, then this cabin is perfect.

The beds were all comfy, lots of heat (propane and wood fire) for the chilly mornings and evenings, bottled water for those who dislike that distinctive Galiano water odour, and a well provisioned kitchen.

We were welcomed by a nice bottle of wine and a vase of lovely flowers - much appreciated!

This is a really nice place!

A lovely stay at a charming heritage home.

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time at the Fireside Cottage with my parents and two young children. Plenty of space for sleeping and a very well stocked kitchen. With little kids the shoreline was about 10 minute walk away, as we never did find the path marked with black dots that was listed in the guidebook at the house. Visited morning beach which was great for the kids and swimming. The shoreline near the house was great for beachcombing and tide pools with low tide, but not great for swimming. House did get very hot but lots of fans were provided and we just kept the windows open to let the ocean breezes flow through. A good time had by all. Thank you!

Past it's Best Before Date.

  • 2 of 5

The house is somewhat run down & the yard is unkempt with stinging nettles in the grass and several large bunches on one side of the house. 2 dogs and 3 humans received bad nettle stings that lasted >24 hours. I finally donned leather work gloves and pulled up the worst of it. The well water reeks of sulphur - which ought to have been mentioned in the initial Ad - getting kids to shower in that is impossible. The bathrooms, linens and towels were clean but the house itself, including the fridge, stove and floors needed a thorough cleaning. The steep stairs to the basement laundry facilities are without railings and the door at the top does not close let alone lock - very dangerous for families with small children; even a hook and eye bolt would be an improvement. While the kitchen is probably the best stocked of any we've ever rented, there was absolutely no room for our own provisions.

While there may be 5 acres attached to the house (a key feature for us because of the dog), the majority of it is dense scrub brush and unusable. The patio umbrella was broken and crashed over on us the first day - (we repaired it and made it safe for our use), and the trampoline should be taken down as it is also broken and unsafe for kids to use. Sorry to be negative, but the place needs some serious attention to bring it back in line with the Ad and photos.

We have owned and successfully rented out both a lake side cottage and a Maui condo for more than 20 years and know what makes for a good holiday home. This one looked and sounded like it had so much potential and the caretaker and owner are nice people, however, the experience fell far short of what we expected, based on the advertisement and photos. We left early.

Great Galliano Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Very private and quiet, the house had great charm! It was easy to find and all the facilities worked. Lots of space if you have a bit bigger of a group. Highly recommend having a car (we had one so it was great) as the property is a fair walking distance from island amenities.

Beautifully renovated heritage home

  • 5 of 5

I and my three friends were totally charmed by this lovely home. It was clean and well equipped with everything we needed to be comfortable for our three night stay. The wood fireplace in the dining area kept us cozy on the main level which was spacious and inviting (and there was plenty of chopped wood in the basement too!) Had the weather cooperated a bit more, we could have even considered a fire in the firepit outside, surrounded by Adirondack chairs. I can't think of a single negative to report! Thanks Joanne!
