There are wonderful weekly markets in the nearby towns where you can purchase locally grown and produced vegetables, cheeses, meats, and seafood. The best markets are: Libourne (15-20 minutes drive), has a market on Tuesday, Fridays, and Sundays with the Sunday one being the largest and best. Bourg (20 minutes drive) on Sundays. Blaye (45 minutes drive) on Wednesdays (After the market, you can take the ferry across the river to the Medoc region and visit some top wineries in the Medoc). St. Andre de Cubzac (8-10 minutes drive) on Thursdays (smaller but lots of seafood) and Saturdays (larger market).
Things to do: Our location offers holiday activities for everyone.
The charming town of St. Emilion and its great wineries are just 25 minutes away. But you must also consider the wines of Fronsac—an up and coming wine appellation and just under 10 minutes away.
Visit Bordeaux—just 20-25 minutes away and offers all the amenities of a major city that resembles a smaller version of Paris with many interesting sights, shopping, and some great restaurants.
You can visit some of the nearby Chateau. The Chateau de Vayres near Libourne is very nice and so is the Chateau Malrome in Saint Andre du Bois (Entre Deux Mers). The Chateau de La Riviere and its wonderful wine caves is about 10 minutes away.
If you are interested in religious history, visit the Abbaye de la Sauve Majeure in Entre Deux Mers.
The Pair-non-Pair grotto, a prehistoric cave with some spectacular drawings is about 15 minutes away.
For more active vacationing there are plenty of biking and hiking trails in the area.
Day Trips: Some of our previous guest’s favorite trips include visiting the Dune du Pyla in Arcachon—about 45 minutes away—and then visiting the coastal area for a seafood meal.
A visit to the Zoo de la Palmyre just north of Royan (about 1:45 hours from Le Mascaret) the best zoo in France, if not Europe, has been a hit with families with children.
Blaye and Bourg, both fortified cities, are within 25 minutes and offer a lot of history, wonderful views, and some great wines.
A visit to Cognac and its world famous Cognac distilleries is a must and it is less than 70 kilometers away.
Les Eyzies (about 2 hours east) with its caves and its prehistoric sites makes for a very interesting day trip.
The owners of Le Mascaret are two families, longtime friends, with a great appreciation for the beauty and culture of Europe in general and France in particular and who fell in love with the house and its environs at first sight. We first visited Le Mascaret in the summer of 2003 and became its owners in October 2003. We live in the Boston Massachusetts area and have extensive ties to Europe and travel there frequently. At some point in the future we hope to spend a great deal of time at Le Mascaret, but now because of job (higher education, nutrition research, software support, and environmental protection) and family commitments we are unable to do so. We have chosen to share it with others who will love it as well.
L Falcon purchased this cottage in 2003
The property is very private and quiet. There are vineyards all around and a beautiful garden for relaxation. Both properties have been renovated and all the appliances have been recently updated. The swimming pool is 6 years old and has a beautiful terrace and lavender garden all around. The property is 3 acres and includes apple, plum, pear, walnut, and fig trees.
Our location offers many options. From total relaxation in the garden or pool to active sightseeing in the Gironde.
Le Mascaret is perfect for visting Bordeaux, Pomerol, and Saint Emilion--all within 20-25 minutes. The Medoc is about 30 minutes away. The Dune du Pyla and Cognac are close enough for day trips.
Le Mascaret has been a real haven of peace for us during the busy time of our son’s wedding. Julian and Maria were married on 14th July in Bordeaux and the South African contingent needed a home form home from which to operate. It surpassed our greatest expectations having elastic walls and crockery and cutlery for the 58 who came back here to celebrate (unexpectedly) after the Mairie’s ceremony! The pool was wonderful, the garden tranquil, and so pretty with lovely walks to the river or in the vineyards. We loved hearing the birds. The South African and French families had time to meet and get to know each other. We loved exploring the area and tasting the French wines, cheeses, patisseries, glaces and chocolate! Thank you for everything!
Linen, towels, gas, and electricity included are included in rental price. 1 Week minimum rental in July and August. Outside of this period, the rental rate is prorated to a nightly rate with a minimum of five nights. A security/damage deposit of 200 euros is required on arrival. All things acceptable it will be returned on departure.
The cottage is as described, well-equipped and came with several electric heaters as we went off-season and these really warmed the place up. If you stroll to the river you can get a nice view of the sunset. This place would be really lovely in summer, when you can use the pool and BBQ and kids can play in the grounds. You need a car to get anywhere; we did bring bikes but bear in mind you're on the river so at the lowest point and we didn't do enough research into nice cycle routes once at the main road! The owner sent us a helpful google map with some places marked and we had great days out in Bordeaux and St Emilion. We also found a great restaurant (Restaurant L'escapade) for lunch and the local shop was great for breakfast.
The property was a fantastic French gite renovated in a rustic style with everything you need for your stay.
The beautiful pool area is shared with one other property and is very close to the gite but also screened from it for privacy. The pool also has a child alarm fitted in case a small child falls in when unattended which is a great idea.
The Bordeaux area is amazing and there is plenty to do as long as you have a car.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing stay and will definitely consider staying again in the future as it really was that good!
The property has a house and a cottage with a shared swimming pool in a quiet rural setting. We stayed in the cottage which is very pretty and surrounded by vineyards. The cottage was spotlessly clean, very well equipped and has a lovely outdoor area for eating and relaxing. It is close to the wine areas of Saint Emillion and Pomerol and an easy drive to Bordeaux and the Margaux and Medoc wine areas. The owner was very obliging and extremely helpful as were the local mangers who helped us get settled. There is a wonderful market at nearly by Libourne and plenty to see and do in the surrounds. We had a lovely time at the cottage and would recommend it as a great place to stay.
We booked this cottage just 3 days before we arrived and the efficiency and personal support from the owner and HomeAway was exemplary.
This is a little gem and we were blessed with a week of 30C sunshine so the pool was fantastic. It really is as good as it looks in the pictures.
We wanted a complete rest and the peace and quiet was a delight. we had neighbours in the farm house but they were far away enough to be no trouble but close enough for us to feel we were not isolated.
We had a fantastic evening in St Emilion, eating inexpensively in the square to live music and went to Libourne market twice. Great fish and vegetables.
We are currently looking right now to book another week next year. Can't wait.
Le Mascaret cottage is a small but perfectly formed holiday cottage. We made extremely good use of the pool and BBQ. It is perfectly placed for visits to Arcachon (the amazing sand dune du Pyla!), Blaye, Bordeaux and surrounding vineyards. The evening marche gourmand in Blasimon is worth the trip. Even the storms were brilliant! I would have no hesitation recommending Le Mascaret to anyone wanting a tranquil, rural holiday in France. The only thing lacking were bicycles but next time we'll just bring our own!
Mascaret is a lovely restored stone cottage & farmhouse built in 17c. The cottage is completely furnished with kitchen, laundry, 2 bathrooms, wifi. The property is in a rural setting with vineyards on all sides, and very quiet. It is a perfect country getaway but is close to the vineyards of Saint Emilion, Fronsac and 1 hour from Médoc and Bordeaux, and close to good pâtisseries and marchés. The pool was too cold in April but we did eat outside for breakfast and one night for dinner. The owners and the caretakers were welcoming, helpful and pleasant. We would come back again!
We are at the end of a quiet lane that leads to the Dordogne river with only the river, vineyards and one neighbor around us. There are small villages and larger towns nearby plus the entrance to the A10 is just 10 minutes away which provides quick access for day trips. Le Mascaret is 25 km from Saint Emilion, 30 km to Blaye, 50 km from Sauternes, and about 75 km from the Medoc. It is just 25 minutes from Bordeaux, under 45 minutes to the Bordeaux Merignac airport, and 60 minutes from the Atlantic ocean beaches. There are bakeries and small shops within 3-5 minutes and large supermarkets within 10-15 minutes.
